  • Staff’s and managers’ conceptions of participation for adults with profound intellectual disabilities or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 21:1, s. 78-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One goal of disability policies in Sweden and other countries is to ensure that people with disabilities are afforded an equal level of daily life participation as other citizens. However, few studies have examined this in adults with profound intellectual disabilities (PID) or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). This study used a phenomenographic approach to interview managers and staff at a social care organisation in a medium-sized Swedish municipality. It aimed to elucidate and describe conceptions of participation to highlight conceptual variations. Divergent conceptualisations were found, reflecting a lack of organisational consensus about the meaning of participation. Trying to fulfil policy goals of daily life participation for adults with PID or PIMD without a common understanding of the meaning of participation is difficult, so people at all levels of an organisation need to have a shared understanding and definition of it. © 2019 The Author(s).

  • Religions – a Janus-Faced Phenomenon in Local Politics : A Swedish Interreligious council and Participants’ Views on Religions as a Possible Asset for Societal Cohesion in the Local Community
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Interreligious Studies and Intercultural Theology. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2397-3471 .- 2397-348X. ; 4:2, s. 224-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Religions can facilitate cohesion,  belonging and feelings of safety or can underpin tensions, separatism or terrorism. This has led local, national and international policymakers to use inter-religious councils to overcome local conflicts by facilitating dialogue. Sweden has a growing number of inter-religious councils around the country. This article focuses on the inter-religious council in Midtown. The aim is (1) to describe how politicians, civil servants and religious leaders as participants in the council express their expectations on the Midtown  inter-religious council, and (2) to analyse these accounts in the light of ongoing research and European examples of inter-religious dialogue. Data have been collected via interviews and participant observation, and analysed through two critical lenses, one focusing on social cohesion, the other on fears of militant religious extremism. Results show that members of the Midtown council view religions as constituting possible obstacles but mainly as an important  asset in a process of developing a cohesive society.

  • Allmänhetens syn på våldsbejakande extremism : En balans mellan sociala, ekonomiska och polisiära åtgärder
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Tidsskrift for Kriminalvidenskab. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0029-1528 .- 2446-3051. ; 3, s. 197-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The so-called Swedish model of trust is characterised by strong public support for the idea of an individual-based and extensive welfare state, well-developed state individualism, high levels of social trust, widespread appreciation of the judiciary, openness, tolerance, and a free and independent press. Today, Swedish society faces several challenges. Will the Swedish model of trust be eroded or is it relatively resilient to stress?A Novus survey from 2019 found that a total of 74 percent of the Swedish population were very or quite worried about Islamic extremism, 66 percent very or quite worried about right-wing extremism and 46 percent very or quite worried about left-wing extremism. Other surveys show that the public is also concerned about the deterioration of the welfare state, social gaps, the increased number of refugees to Sweden and xenophobia. Moreover, the Novus survey shows that 65 percent believe that violence-promoting extremism will increase in Sweden in the coming ten-year period. 22 percent indicate that they have become suspicious of people they have encountered in everyday situations and 15 percent have avoided large crowds, e.g. shopping malls, pedestrian areas and subways. When asked which measures are good for increasing security in society, common answers were to reduce social exclusion, increase camera surveillance in public places and provide more information on democratic principles and values. These answers indicate that Swedish public opinion has a relatively balanced view of public measures against violent extremism, which is consistent with the Swedish model of trust. In general, the public does not propose the implementation of overly excessive measures against violent extremism. However, given continued public concern over the development of violent extremism, the long term stability of the Swedish model of trust remains in question.

  • Leadership culture and the position of girls and young women within elite gymnastics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Differences, Inequalities and Sociological Imagination. - 9788073302726 ; , s. 243-243
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mainstream discourse on sport and young people brings positive aspects, such as enjoyment, development and health promotion to the fore. Sport is also presumed to be secure. Drawing on a study of leadership culture within Swedish elite gymnastics, the paper examines how coaches and gymnasts approach issues such as food and diet, weight and weight control, injuries and pain, sport relationships (coach-gymnast, coach-gymnast-parents, coach-sport association, etcetera), knowledge and competence, as well as the relationship between leadership culture and policy documents such as the National guidelines for elite gymnastics and the UN convention on the rights of the child. The analysis brings the gendering practices of the coaches – often an adult man - to the fore and indicates that girls and young women are subjected to more control, verbal abuse, and stricter demands on both obedience and diet than boys and young men. Boys and young men seem to be treated more democratically and receive more positive feedback and social support. These results are discussed in relation to the intersection of age and gender inequality, as well as constructions of both gender and the child, for example, how the treatment of girls and young women is associated with a well-established notion that female gymnasts need a child-like body to be able to perform at the elite level. Furthermore, prevailing conceptions of the optimal body of a successful gymnast is discussed, particularly in the light of the pubertal development of girl's' and boys' bodies.

  • Understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities : a pedagogical sociocultural perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities. - : Sage Publications. - 1744-6295 .- 1744-6309. ; 23:2, s. 203-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study sought to explore different understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities. Using a pedagogical sociocultural perspective, the research focused on individuals' perspectives and understandings as well as their account of social interaction, working and learning. In all, 17 people working in daily activity services were interviewed once, and, of these, 14 were interviewed a second time. Using qualitative content analysis, two themes and three categories were singled out. The results show that participation can be understood in two major ways: social interaction and performing work tasks.
