- Den här studien handlar om en grupp barn som inte har några föräldrar i Sverige, och som därför bor på institution. På senare tid har man tillskrivit dem kategoriseringen ensamkommande. Bakom det begreppet finns barn i olika åldrar som har lämnat sin familj och sitt hemland för ett nytt liv på en plats i världen med större framtidsmöjligheter. Många av dessa barn, som flyr till västvärlden på egen hand, delar erfarenheter av att placeras på institution. Mer precist är det en sådan tillvaro denna studie kommer att kretsa kring.

Residential usability and social sustainability, Towards a paradigm shift within housing design?

- ABSTRACTThe ongoing demographic transformation poses challenges for the field of residential design. Meanwhile rules and regulations maintain a conventional approach to the subject. The housing market is considering the home as a commercialized lifestyle question, not focusing on the long-term residential resilience of the housing stock. These preconditions imply a misfit between accelerating diversity in articulated consumer preferences and appropriate offers in the housing market. This situation impacts the quality of life in housing, in particular regarding issues of social sustainability. In order to obtain a sustainable housing stock we need to develop a new focus and new perspectives for the design professions. This study constitutes a part of a larger research and development experimental project, the Positive Footprint Housing project. This licentiate thesis concentrates on the notion of residential usability and how it relates to aspects of social sustainability. It also focuses on how these issues can be incorporated into the practice of residential design. The mixed methodological approach is based on the combination of studies of residential life situations with non-directed interviews and research by design in master studios. The work adopts a theoretical perspective presented by Schneider and Till and tests the hypothesis of residential usability as a critical precondition for socially sustainable residential processes. Findings from the research show that enhanced usability in residential design represents an important factor in the realisation of a sustainable society. A main result is the elaboration of a model for implementing social sustainability aspects in the design work in order to promote future housing design innovations. Further research intends to address the complexity of residential user participation and accompanying social consequences.Keywords: residential design, residential usability, flexibility, adaptability, alterability, social sustainability, residential process, user participation, demographic transformation

Space and Time Configurations in Telemedicine

- Sammanfattning: Denna licentiatavhandling är en socioteknisk och spatiotemporal studie av praktiserande av hälso‐ och sjukvård med hjälp av informations‐ och kommunikationsteknik (IKT), eller s k telemedicin. IKT förknippas ofta med möjligheten att överkomma tid och rum och tillåta åtkomst av sådant som finns någon annanstans. I den här rollen ses IKT ofta som ett instrument för att både höja kvalitet och effektivitet. Studiens utgångspunkt är dock att varken tid och rum eller kvalitet och effektivitet är fixerade enheter utan varierar med förändring av kontexten. Det första fallet studerar användandet av teleultrasonografi för fosterövervakning, d.v.s. ultraljud kopplat med möjligheten att elektroniskt transportera fosteravbildningen till olika expertcentra runtom i världen. Avhandlingen pekar på hur teleultrasonografi inte enbart kan förstås som en introduktion av ytterligare en teknisk applikation, i det här fallet för att överkomma geometrisk rymd och mekanisk tid, utan kommer att transformera aktörsroller. Särskild uppmärksammas möjliga förändringar i relationen mellan den gravida kvinnan och fostret när de blir möjliga att skilja åt genom virtualiseringen av fostret när ultrasonografi‐ och telemedicinapplikationer kopplas ihop. Studien bygger på textanalyser av vetenskapliga artiklar i internationella tidskrifter som behandlar sammankopplandet av telemedicin och ultraljud. Det andra fallet studerar olika svenska aktörer, såsom läkare, hälsoekonomer och policymakare, i deras försök att använda telemedicinapplikationer för att hantera tillgängligheten till sjukvård. Avhandlingen visar att beroende på t ex medicinsk praktik, platsen för försöken, vem som är ansvarig för projekten samt vilken innebörd ’avstånd’ ges i olika kontexter, så blir också praktiserandet av telemedicin skilda saker. Detta gör att området kan attrahera intresse från olika aktörer, men också att nationella aktörer som i telemedicin ser ett instrument för att omstrukturera svensk sjukvård upplever den som ’diffus’ och får svårigheter att styra utvecklingen i den riktning de önskar, t ex att skifta fokus från att överkomma geografiskt avstånd till att främja nya former av samarbeten inom hälso‐ och sjukvården. För att telemedicin ska kunna spela en ledande roll inom svensk hälso‐ och sjukvård är det därför nödvändigt för telemedicin att både vara anpassningsbar och heterogen, men också homogen och stabil; flytande såväl som fixerad. Det analyserade empiriska materialet består av en rad svenska aktörers publikationer om telemedicin och relaterade områden, t ex medicinska artiklar, policydokument, utvärderingar och rapporter.

From Vision to Transition : Exploring the Potential for Public Information Services to Facilitate Sustainable Urban Transport

- Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings.Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures.Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

Communicating visions for urban development : a micro-study of a governance process

- This thesis studies the topic of policy making in the context of producing a comprehensive plan. The thesis uses the case of a municipality in Sweden. Contributing to the understanding of how governance processes can be performed, this thesis studies policy making in a collaborative situation. A form of micro-study is used to scrutinize in detail the dialogues between participants. The thesis applies Membership Categorization Analysis and Conversation Analysis to uncover the participants' accomplishments. The approaches reveal a variety of ways the participants perform planning, how visions and strategies are implemented in practice and how participants can reach agreement on planning issues. The study provides planning research with further understanding of the situatedness and epistemology of policy making, and it brings to light the variety of ways participants in policy making can enter and inform discussions, thereby enhancing the level of democracy in governance processes.

- Syftet med denna uppsats är att studera svårigheterna i att tillämpa direktdemokratiska strukturer i en organisation. Klarar fallexemplet, den tyska anarkistiska och pacifistiska organisationen Graswurzelrevolution, av att tillämpa sina radikaldemokratiska principer under tiden 1972 till 1996? Jag har genomfört studien med hjälp av litteraturstudier, deltagande observation, arkivstudier och intervjuer och speciellt intresserat mig för organisationens formella respektive informella makt- och konflikthantering. I resultatdelen diskuterar jag centrala tendenser och konflikter inom organisationen mellan olika ideologier, kön eller sociala grupper. I huvudsak finner jag en tendens till homogenisering där de som inte passar in på olika sätt stöts bort genom informella processer. Centralt är aktörernas användning av en idealmedlem, ”Gräsrotsmänniskan”, vilket ibland skapar förföljelser av aktiva som inte passar in, aktiva som blir utdefinierade.

- Collaboration is a well-used term in all kinds of settings. The term often encapsulates beliefs around how collective action yields improved results compared to individual action. Such improved results from inter-organisational collaboration now appear utterly taken for granted. Has working with people from other organisations become a value to pursue in and of itself? Abstract overall goals for joint work bolster the make-believe around how people from different organisations easily agree a set of joint goals. In practice there is a web of goals: people bring their own personal goals, as well as the goals that they conceptualise as belonging to their home organisations and to the organisation-of-organisations. I draw on participant observation in two settings of inter-organisational collaboration. My interpretation of practices in the two settings makes clearer how values underpin everyday encounters. I explore how talk of goals in each setting hints at values that people associate with participation in joint work. I suggest that participants in settings of inter-organisational collaboration build in moments to explore and recognise the values that underpin goals. This helps counter idealisation of what it means to work together with colleagues from other organisations. Without such exploratory moments, people risk speaking past each other rather than truly making the difference they hoped their joint work would bring about.
