Identity, Old(er) Age and Migrancy : A Social Constructionist Lens

- ldentity research in relation to ethnicity and migration has tended to focus an younger people whilst identity research in relation to ageing and old(er) age has not focused an migrants. This inadvertent mutual neglect has led to a lack of identity research that examines the identity categories of old(er) age and migrancy together, a lacuna that this dissertation aims to redress. This dissertation departs from a social constructionist understanding of identity as situationally accomplished in the interplay between how one defines oneself (internally) and how others define one (externally). The questions raised by this perspective and addressed in this dissertation are: When (in what situations) and in relation to whom do old(er) age and migrancy (respectively) seem to become meaningful for identification? How do the identity categories of old(er) age and migrancy seem to be negotiated? The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews with 24 older migrants (13 men, 11 women) aged between 55 and 79 who have been living in Sweden for 18 to 61 years. Interviewees come from 12 different countries that vary in perceived cultural distance from Sweden. The findings suggest that identifications with old(er) age and migrancy seem to be dynamic and flexible rather than necessarily permanently meaningful, thus gaining meaning in specific situations and in relation to particular Others. External definitions furthermore do not always seem to match with internal ones. Regardless of how old(er) age and migrancy are constructed, they seem to be negotiable. This dissertation thus contributes to identity research by studying old(er) age and migrancy together and furthermore sheds light onto how the social constructionist lens allows us to see variability where stability otherwise would be presumed.

- The globalisation of international migration is challenging social work practice in general and elder care in particular all across Europe. This article gives insight into social work practice with elderly people in Sweden by focusing on older migrants and their families. The article addresses the changes that Swedish elder care has undergone through the past few decades and how elder care is organised. The cases of two migrant families who care for their elderly relatives are described also in an attempt to draw attention to some of the specific challenges that social work practice with older migrants and their families can pose. The article argues that social work practice with these specific populations needs to become aware of the implications that understandings of ethnic ‘Otherness’ have for how elder care is planned and provided. Moreover, it is argued that the globalisation of international migration we are witnessing across Europe and the ethnic diversity in older populations that it brings about demand that social work is delivered in a more generationally aware way. Aiming to solely increase the social integration of older migrants can end up jeopardizing the social and economic integration of their families.

- This chapter draws attention to the ways in which ethnicity and race have been conceptualised in the social sciences, and argues that research on the nexus of migration and ageing is most often informed by either social gerontology or migration studies. The chapter describes the three approaches to ethnicity and race there are (i.e. primordialism, circumstantialism and social constructionism), and how these approaches have informed how these identification grounds are made sense of in social gerontology, and migration studies respectively. The chapter presents what research on older ethno-racialised minorities has already shown about the approaches that most often inform social gerontology (i.e. primordialism and circumstantialim), and critically dissects how research on older migrants approaches these identification grounds. The chapter argues that scholarship (not just policy and practice) is a construction site that spreads ideas about ethno-racialised populations (incl. migrants), which is why a critical lens on the approaches that inform research is needed.

- This article is based on data gathered through 60 qualitative interviews conducted within the realm of three research projects that have used "culture-appropriate lenses" to study the postmigration situation of late-in-life Iranian immigrants to Sweden. The findings gathered through these studies were interpreted against the backdrop that culturally appropriate nursing theories provide. This meant that it was, at times, these elders' backgrounds as cultural "others" that were implicitly used to make sense of the various issues that were brought to the fore by these studies. The particular issue with which this article is concerned is the "unusualness" of these elders' explanatory models of illness. Inspired by the concept definition of situation in the symbolic interactionist perspective and by the feeling that this perspective might bring about a different interpretation of the original findings regarding their understandings of illness and disease, we set out to conduct a secondary analysis of these elders explanatory models of illness. The findings presented in this article will show how the elderly Iranian immigrants interviewed in these three studies utilize the process of "late in life migration" as a point of reference for their understandings of what has caused the illnesses from which they suffered. Hereby we will suggest that the "unusualness" of their explanatory models of illness might be best understood if we focus on what they shared as immigrants (i.e., the fact that the process of late-in-life migration has made their culture obsolete) as opposed to what they shared as Iranians (i.e., their culture of origin).

Being, feeling and acting : A qualitative study of Swedish home-help care recipients' understandings of dependence and independence

- This article contributes to the debate on dependence and independence through a study of how a group of 29 cognitively healthy Swedish home-help care recipients between the ages of 77 and 93 perceive their situation. Two overall themes with regards to how the constructs of dependence and independence are understood were found. One of them concerns how being in need of help can be justified (i.e. the why of receiving help) and the other how the very situation of being in need of help and care can be regarded (i.e. the how of receiving help). The study reveals a clear distinction between receiving help and care and feeling dependent, as well as between receiving help and care and being able to remain an active agent. On the basis of these findings we argue for the fruitfulness of distinguishing between ‘being’, ‘feeling’ and ‘acting’ as aspects of dependence and independence.
