  • The Swedish forestry model : more of everything?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Forest Policy and Economics. - : Elsevier. - 1389-9341 .- 1872-7050. ; 77, s. 44-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "The Swedish forestry model" refers to the forest regime that evolved following the 1993 revision of the Swedish Forestry Act. It is key to Swedish forest politics and used to capture the essence of a sustainable way of managing forests. However, the ideas, institutions and practices comprising the model have not been comprehensively analyzed previously. Addressing this knowledge gap, we use frame analysis and a Pathways approach to investigate the underlying governance model, focusing on the way policy problems are addressed, goals, implementation procedures, outcomes and the resulting pathways to sustainability. We suggest that the institutionally embedded response to pressing sustainability challenges and increasing demands is expansion, inclusion and integration: more of everything. The more-of-everything pathway is influenced by ideas of ecological modernization and the optimistic view that existing resources can be increased. Our findings suggest that in effect it prioritizes the economic dimension of sustainability. While broadening out policy formulation it closes down the range of alternative outputs, a shortcoming that hampers its capacity to respond to current sustainability challenges. Consequently, there is a need for a broad public debate regarding not only the role of forests in future society, but also the operationalization of sustainable development.

  • Places of Pain and Spaces of Silence : Re-Visiting a Bosnian Rape Camp
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Geopolitics. - 1465-0045 .- 1557-3028.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relation between gender, silence, place and space is theorised in this article through an analysis of the former rape camp Vilina Vlas in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Combining a spatial perspective with narrative analysis, we dissect spatial practices and narrative silences that shape and reshape a particular place defined by gendered violence. We suggest that ‘places of pain’ and ‘spaces of silence’ are co-constituted through a lack of acknowledgement and spatial erasures, as well as the making and breaking of silences. Our investigation discloses how places of gendered violence are hidden, transformed and forgotten and how women exposing them are silenced and rejected, yet still continue to resist and speak out. The article sheds light on the long-term consequences of gendered violence in war and contributes to the growing research agenda on gendered geographies of violence.

  • WPS and civil society
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Oxford Handbook of Women, Peace, and Security. - New York : Oxford University Press. - 9780190638276 - 9780190638290 ; , s. 428-438
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Civil society is often understood as a normative vehicle for the promotion of human rights and democracy, as it plays a central role in ensuring gender equality and advocating for local ownership in the decision-making processes of states. Civil society agents and organizations have been instrumental in promoting and advancing the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. In this chapter, we examine the experiences of Bosnian Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and their activities to advance a gender-just peace. Drawing on examples from the Bosnian case study, we argue that women civil society organizations are key actors, as they not only set the agenda when it comes to WPS, they also play a key role in ensuring that the WPS principles are institutionalized and operationalized in policy. Moreover, we observe that women CSOs are particularly successful in advocating for the needs of victims of conflict-related sexual-based violence.

  • Experts, Idiots, and Liars : The Gender Politics of Knowledge and Expertise in Turbulent Times
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Social Politics. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 1072-4745 .- 1468-2893. ; 27:4, s. 643-647
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This special issue advances feminist inquiry and theorizing of the politics of knowledge within our current, highly paradoxical societal landscape. It draws together feminist analyses of “expertise” with feminist epistemologies of situated knowledge, Black feminist thought, theory of affect and emotions, sociology of knowledge, and science and technology studies (STS). As such, it enables a timely interdisciplinary engagement with current paradigmatic shifts in knowledge production and claims to expertise as well as an examination of the gendered and racialized epistemic authority. For several decades, the study of “knowledge,” changing modes of knowledge production, and the dynamics shaping the recognition of expertise were largely confided to the specialized subfields of sociology of knowledge..

  • Geschlecht und Biomedizinpolitik. Vergleichende Perspektiven.
  • 2003. - 32, nr 2

  • Political Epistemology in Gender Policy-Making : The German Democratization of Expertise
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Social Politics. - : Oxford University Press. - 1072-4745 .- 1468-2893. ; 27:4, s. 765-789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes the concept of feminist political epistemology to examine the changing modalities of knowledge production in Germany. The article examines how German gender equality policies have been embedded in and shaped by the shifting modalities of knowledge production and the remaking of the science expertise–politics nexus. The two formative time periods investigated—the 1960s–1970s and 1998 to the present—account for major shifts in the gender and political knowledge regime in Germany. The findings provide insights into the contradictory dynamics involved in transformations of political and epistemic authority.

  • Neither Fish nor Fowl : Educational Broadcasting in Sweden 1930-2000
  • 2011
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • 'The history of Swedish broadcast media' is a mulddisciplinary researchproject that began as a joint effort by the public broadcasting enterprises in Sweden and is still active under the administration of Stiftdsen Etermediernas Hisloria. It was initially divided into Threeprojects: 'Radio, TV, and authority'; 'Society, news, and audience'; and'Best room, playroom'. A separate research programme on educationalbroadcast media, financed by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, UlbildningsRadion (UR), Stiftdsen Etermediernas Historia, and University of Linköping, ran between 1997 and 2006 and involved some twenty scholars. Professor Bengt Sandin at the University ofUnkiiping led the research programme and was responsible for its overall planning and design. The project resulted in seventeen anthologies and monographs, and a large number of articles. Sten-Åke Pettersson from UR served as the administrative head of the project, and brought valuable insight into the intricacies of media potitio; and its complicated history. The project also benefited immensely from an advisory committee with representatives from both academe and the educational media. The authors owe a debt of thanks to Lars Ag, Börje Dahlqvist, Sten-åke Pettersson, Gunilla Sterner-Kumm, and Jarl Torbacke for sharing their experiences and understanding of the processes studied. Together with the scholars who participated and wrote separate studies, we all formcd a vibrant and challenging multidisciplinary community, and the seminars and workshops were intellectually demanding and fun in equal measure. Thanks also to Charlotte Merton, who tnmslated the Swedish edition into elegant English, and Mark Davies, for the proofreading. We hope that this last book will convey some of the challenges. complications, and joys of coming to grips with the history and politics of educational media.

  • Knowledge for environmental governance: probing science–policy theory in the cases of eutrophication and fisheries in the Baltic Sea
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning. - : Routledge. - 1523-908X .- 1522-7200. ; 19:6, s. 769-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How science and policy interact has been a major research focus in the International Relations (IR) tradition, using the epistemic community (EC) concept, as well as in the alternative perspective of Science and Technology Studies (STS). Should science be autonomous and as apolitical as possible in order to ‘speak truth to power’, as suggested by EC or should the inevitable entanglement of science and politics be accepted and embraced so as to make advice more conducive to negotiating the explicit travails of political decision-making as suggested by STS? With this point of departure, we compare similarities and differences between science–policy interactions in the issue areas of eutrophication and fisheries management of the Baltic Sea. To examine how knowledge is mobilised, the concepts of ‘uncertainty’ and ‘coherence’ are developed, drawing on both EC and STS thinking. We then reflect on the explanatory value of these approaches in both cases and discuss how a separation of science and policy-making in the pursuit of achieving scientific consensus leads to ineffectual policies. Drawing on STS thinking, we urge for a re-conceptualisation of coherence in order to accommodate a more reflexive practice of science–policy interactions.

  • Festival Venue that makes sense : A study of Skansen arena in Stockholm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cogent Social Sciences. - : Cogent OA. - 2331-1886. ; 7:1, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the open-air museum ofSkansen in Stockholm as venue for celebration of Persian Fire Festival is assessed by thefestival’s visitors. The study is based on a delimited part of a larger online survey with280 completed questionnaires including both close-ended and open-ended questions, and a qualitative thematic analysis method has been used in this paper. The resultsshow a high level of appreciation of the Skansen venue that gives the visitors positiveemotions, meanings, place attachment, place identity and a sense of place. Contributingfactors have been the high status of the venue that has given the visitors pride anddignity; security and safety of the venue; size of the venue; and the natural beauty of thevenue. The most important disadvantage factor has been the lack of accessibilitycombined with lack of sufficient public transport. The results have implications for theSwedish society, for the policy makers in Stockholm city and for both the host and theorganiser of the festival and gives rise to new debates on immigrants’ socio-culturalintegration into Swedish society. This paper gives a contribution to existing literature onfestival venue and its impact on the visitor’s overall assessment of the festival.
