  • Diversity of development paths and structural transformation in historical perspective—An introduction
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Diverse Development Paths and Structural Transformation in the Escape from Poverty. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780198737407
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter introduces the overriding question of the volume—whether poor countries can catch up—by providing an overview of theories and approaches that have contributed to this discussion. It argues for the importance of introducing to the analysis the role of structural transformation and to acknowledge that the conditions for economic development vary from case to case. Instead of clinging on to universal templates to be emulated for best result, the analysis of current growth processes in the developing world may be enriched if closer attention is paid to the multifaceted nature of economic backwardness and the successful pathways of catching up taking place in Asia. The chapter introduces the different contributions of the volume, situated in the borderland of Economic History and Development Economics, as pertinent examples of how the research agenda about long-term development and catching up can be enlightened.

  • Relative economic backwardness and catching up: lessons from history, implications for development thinking
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Diverse Development Paths and Structural Transformation in the Escape from Poverty. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780198737407
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter expands on three main topics. First, it is argued that the economic historical perspective may contribute to our understanding of present day development processes. Instead of advocating a one-size-fits-all model, an analytical framework is offered based on common traits from diverse examples. Second, the importance of agricultural change on the road towards sustained economic growth is discussed and argued that it is a vital part of the development process. In the final section of the chapter the question is put whether in some countries perhaps the relative backwardness is too great an obstacle to permit catching up. The conclusion is that it is not too late but that the possibilities for countries today to fully take advantage of being late hinges on their ability to couple economic growth with structural transformation.

  • Market Thickness and the Early Labour Market Career of University Graduates : An Urban Advantage?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Spatial Economic Analysis. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1742-1772 .- 1742-1780. ; 9:4, s. 396-419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyse the influence of market thickness for skills on initial wages and the early job market career of university graduates. Using Swedish micro-level panel data on a cohort of graduates, we show that two out of three graduates move to large cities upon graduation. Large cities increase employment probabilities and yield higher rewards to human capital, even after controlling for employment selection. The premium on initial wages for graduates in urban regions is in the interval of 5-6%, and we estimate a wage-growth premium of about 2-4%. Thicker markets for skills appear as a key reason for the concentration of graduates to larger cities.

  • Characteristics and performance of new firms and spinoffs in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford Univ Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyse the rate of formation, the characteristics, and the performance of different types of new firms in Sweden over a decade. Comparisons with Denmark, Brazil, and the United States suggest that the environment for new firm formation in Sweden is not markedly different than elsewhere. In line with previous studies, spin-offs of incumbents perform better than other types of new firms, particularly if their parent firm continues to operate. A novel finding is that the larger the size of their parent, the greater is the rate of employment growth of spin-offs. This contrasts sharply with findings for firms with a single owner.

  • Does spatial employment density spur inter-firm job switching?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The annals of regional science. - : Springer. - 0570-1864 .- 1432-0592. ; 51:1, s. 245-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inter-firm job switching of workers is a much cited but seldom measured source of the productivity advantages of spatial employment density. It has been advanced as a conduit for localized knowledge flows as well as labor market matching efficiency. Using a matched employer-employee dataset for Sweden, we estimate the influence spatial employment density has on the probability of inter-firm job switching of private sector workers. Our estimates suggest that a doubling of employment density per square kilometer increases the probability that a random worker switches employer by 0.2 % points. The same effect is substantially higher for more skilled workers. While the effect of a doubling of density is limited, the actual differences in density across the regions in our data amount to a factor over 40, rendering differences in density an important explanation for regional variations in rates of inter-firm job switching.

  • External Trade and Internal Geography: Local Export Spillovers by Industry Characteristics and Firm Size
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Spatial Economic Analysis. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1742-1772 .- 1742-1780. ; 7:4, s. 420-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exporting firms in a region may reduce export entry costs for other local firms either through market or non-market interactions. This paper tests this proposition by analyzing whether the probability of exporting among Swedish firms is positively associated with the local presence of exporters in their region and industry. Our results support this conjecture, while also providing some support for such export spillovers being more important in contract-intensive industries and small firms. The results for different industries and size-classes of firms are also sensitive to whether we focus on firms' export status or restrict the sample to export starters.

  • How does accessibility to knowledge sources affect the innovativeness of corporations? : evidence from Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The annals of regional science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0570-1864 .- 1432-0592. ; 39:4, s. 741-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the innovative performance of 130 Swedish corporations during 1993-1994. The number of patents per corporation is explained as a function of the accessibility to internal and external knowledge sources of each corporation. A coherent way of handling accessibility measures, within and between corporations located across regions, is introduced. We examine the relative importance of intra- and interregional knowledge sources from 1) the own corporation, 2) other corporations, and 3) universities. The results show that there is a positive relationship between the innovativeness of a corporation and its accessibility to university researchers within regions where own research groups are located. Good accessibility among the corporation's research units does not have any significant effects on the likelihood of generation of patents. Instead the size of the R&D staff of the corporation seems to be the most important internal factor. There is no indication that intraregional accessibility to other corporations' research is important for a corporation's innovativeness. However, there is some indication of reduced likelihood for own corporate patenting when other corporate R&D is located in nearby regions. This may reflect a negative effect from competition for R&D labor.
