  • Effect of stabilization method and freeze/thaw-aided precipitation on structural and functional properties of proteins recovered from brown seaweed (Saccharina latissima)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Food Hydrocolloids. - : Elsevier BV. - 0268-005X. ; 96, s. 140-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • - Structural, functional and nutritional properties of protein recovered from brown seaweed, S. latissima with alkaline solubilization/isoelectric precipitation as a function of different post-harvest stabilization methods were studied. The latter included freezing at −20 °C/-80 °C, oven-drying, sun-drying, freeze-drying and ensilaging. Also, the efficacy of freeze/thaw-aided precipitation (F/T) in improving protein recovery of the process was evaluated. The freeze-dried, oven-dried, and −20 °C frozen seaweeds resulted in significantly higher protein yield than the −80°C-frozen, sun-dried and ensiled biomasses. F/T increased protein precipitation and doubled total protein yield. Sun-drying and −20°C-freezing caused extensive protein degradation as revealed by SDS-PAGE and HP-SEC, while oven-drying altered the seaweed protein structure with less α-helices. Functional properties of the seaweed proteins were remarkably affected by stabilization condition and F/T, but nutritional value of the proteins was only dependent on stabilization method. Thus, to efficiently recover seaweed proteins, its post-harvest stabilization condition must be carefully chosen based on the final application of the proteins. © 2019 The Authors

  • Artificial Intelligence and Ethics in Portfolio Management
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Agrifoglio R., Lamboglia R., Mancini D., Ricciardi F. (eds) Digital Business Transformation. Lecture Notes in Information Systems and Organisation, vol 38.. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030473556 ; , s. 19-30
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work in progress aims to explore ethical dilemmas connected to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in financial portfolio management, and their managerial implications. In old school quantitative investing, portfolio allocation decisions are typically based on a well-defined investment strategy. Financial portfolio managers devise and apply investment strategies to maximize expected returns for customers’ portfolios. The introduction of AI-enhanced algorithms enables smart machines to automatically revise and update investment strategies, learning from the past. AI itself might produce significant effects on the gains and losses of the portfolio management strategies, raising ethical dilemmas connected with human versus machine responsibility, accountability, and risk. From the managerial point of view, a new dimension of performance measuring, competence evaluation and incentive allocation is required for managing AI software developers in this area. To explore such dilemmas, empirical evidence is drawn here from MDOTM, an innovative and successful young enterprise developing AI-driven investment strategies for financial markets.

    • While Industrial robots are very successful in many areas of industrial manufacturing, assembly automation still suffers from complex time consuming programming and the need of dedicated hardware. ABB has developed YuMi, a collaborative inherently safe assembly robot that is expected to reduce integration costs significantly by offering a standardized hardware setup and simple fitting of the robot into existing workplaces. Internal Pilot testing at ABB has however shown that when YuMi is programmed with traditional methods the programming time even for simple assembly tasks will remain very long. The SARAFun project has been formed to enable a non-expert user to integrate a new bi-manual assembly task on a YuMi robot in less than a day. This will be accomplished by augmenting the YuMi robot with cutting edge sensory and cognitive abilities as well as reasoning abilities required to plan and execute an assembly task. The overall conceptual approach is that the robot should be capable of learning and executing assembly tasks in a human like manner. Studies will be made to understand how human assembly workers learn and perform assembly tasks. The human performance will be modelled and transferred to the YuMi robot as assembly skills. The robot will learn assembly tasks, such as insertion or folding, by observing the task being performed by a human instructor. The robot will then analyze the task and generate an assembly program, including exception handling, and design 3D printable fingers tailored for gripping the parts at hand. Aided by the human instructor, the robot will finally learn to perform the actual assembly task, relying on sensory feedback from vision, force and tactile sensing as well as physical human robot interaction. During this phase the robot will gradually improve its understanding of the assembly at hand until it is capable of performing the assembly in a fast and robust manner.

  • Parametric optimization of motion and stiffness characteristics of passive drives of a bipedal walking robot
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: J. Visnyk Kyiv University, Ser. “Cybernetics”.. ; :3, s. 17-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of optimization both structural parameters of passive drives and motion of a bipedal anthropomorphic robot is studied. The motion of the robot is modeled by taking into account the kinematic characteristics of human gait. At the feet of the robot there are passive drives that are modeled by springs having piece-wise stiffness parameters. The optimization problem has been converted into a nonlinear programming problem by approximation of the generalized coordinates using smoothing cubic splines and solved numerically. Analysis of the solution has shown that the kinematic characteristics of the motion of the robot with passive drives located at the hinges of the feet are relatively close to the same characteristics of a human gait.

  • The Role of ‘Influencers’ as Drivers of a More Sustainable Urban Freight Sector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract The importance of stakeholders in the development of a sustainable urban freight sector has been highlighted in recent research. Not all stakeholders have a direct link to the supply chain, but they may still play a role in creating sustainable urban freight initiatives. This study explores the initiatives that norm-setting indirect stakeholders in urban freight, referred to as ‘influencers’, establish to support a more sustainable urban freight sector, and how those initiatives may impact the business models of carriers. The study uses data gathered for ongoing research into the roles of indirect stakeholders in the development of sustainable urban freight initiatives. The results indicate that influencers can put pressure on receivers regarding logistical issues and shape the physical environment in which deliveries are conducted. Influencers use three primary strategies to support sustainable urban freight: vehicle-focused measures, consolidation linked to physical infrastructure, and consolidation through behavioural changes. These initiatives impact the relationship between receivers and carriers and may push carriers to adopt more sustainable practices as well as take decisions that impact their business models. The results highlight the often-overlooked power of influencers in relation to the development of actor behaviour in the urban freight supply chain and show the potential for both conflict and change arising from the use of this power.

  • Trustworthy “blackbox” Self-Adaptive Systems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: REFSQ Workshops 2023. - 1613-0073.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For humans to trust Self-Adaptive Systems in critical situations, they must be robust, ethical, and lawful, but human intelligence is still needed to make ethical decisions. This paper presents a framework to discuss human values in the RE process for Self-Adaptive Systems and RE-specific challenges arising due to the AI paradigm shift towards foundation models: self-supervised blackboxes. Semi-autonomous heavy mining vehicles are a running example to present the requirements.

  • Characterization of oxide scales formed on FeCrAl alloys at high temperatures
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on the characterization of oxide scales formed on FeCrAl alloys at high temperatures. The effect of water vapour on commercial FeCrAl alloys oxidized in both dry and humid O2 has been investigated. Also, the effect of varying Al concentrations in model FeCrAl alloys was studied as well as the effect of using surface coatings in order to increase the oxidation resistance of FeCrAl alloys. The formed oxide scales were characterized using analysis techniques such as SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, XPS, AES and SIMS. The main part of the work concerns the SEM, EDX, AES and SIMS techniques. The commercial FeCrAl alloys investigated follow the same trend in oxide formation independent of whether the alloy was conventionally cast or manufactured by powder metallurgy. In the as-received cold rolled condition the surface of the FeCrAl material shows a few nm thin native oxide. This native oxide is a mixture of oxides from Fe, Cr and Al, with a relatively high concentration of Cr. The oxide formation at elevated temperatures can be separated in a low temperature and a high temperature mode. At relatively low temperatures (500-600°C) a mixed oxide similar to the pre-existing native oxide forms, while at higher temperatures a thicker two-layered alumina scale forms. The outer and inner alumina layers are separated by a Cr-rich zone which is believed to be a remnant of the pre-existing native oxide and hence represents the original alloy surface. Accordingly the inner alumina layer is formed by oxygen inward diffusion while the outer alumina layer grows by cation outward diffusion. The inner alumina is composed of a-Al2O3, while the outer layer, during early stages, is composed of rapidly growing metastable polymorphs of alumina which with time transform to a-Al2O3. This phase transformation starts at the Cr-rich zone and progress outward. In presence of water vapour this transformation is inhibited due to hydroxylation of the surface of the metastable phases. Hence, a higher oxidation rate was observed in presence of water vapour. Model FeCrAl alloys having Al concentrations in the range 1.2-5 wt.% were investigated. At 900°C a minimum of 3.2% Al is needed in order to form a continuous alumina scale. Higher Al concentrations (= 4.4%) result in a relatively pure alumina scale and a slower oxidation rate. In order to evaluate the possibility to improve the oxidation resistance of FeCrAl a PVD SiO2 coating was applied on a commercial FeCrAl foil prior to oxidation. Parallel exposures of coated and uncoated samples were made at 1000°C and revealed that the SiO2 coating significantly reduced the initial oxidation rate of the FeCrAl foil. Further, metal organic CVD of a ZrO2 film in situ on an RE free FeCrAl alloy at 400 and 800°C showed that at the lower temperature mainly ZrO2 was formed while at 800°C an oxide scale composed of both ZrO2 and Al2O3 was formed. The results obtained illuminate the importance of advanced electron microscopy and surface analysis techniques in order to increase the understanding of high temperature oxidation of FeCrAl alloys and the oxidation mechanisms of this group of materials.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences. - 1394-2506. ; 26:4, s. 708-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fine quality coating materials for a variety of surfaces using environmentally friendly substrates are continuously in demand. A large proportion of acrylate derivatives, which are toxic and hazardous, were found in most of the coating formulations. Many efforts have been done to replace acrylate derivatives with other materials derived from renewable resources. In this work, several formulations of wood coating containing different composition of epoxy acrylate and enzymatically synthesized epoxide from soybean oil or wax esters mixture of dioleyl adipate and 1,5-pentanediol diricinoleate were prepared. The formulations were subjected to performance evaluations including gel content, pendulum hardness, and surface test. Formulation 1 containing 85% epoxy acrylate and 15% epoxidation from soybean oil exhibited the highest gel content (79.5%), pendulum hardness (61.02%) and surface resistance to different types of liquid. Increase in surface resistance was observed using a formulation containing 85% epoxy acrylate and a mixture of 1,5-pentanediol diricinoleate and dioleyl adipate (1:1, w/w; 15%). Therefore, these reduced acrylate formulations showed good potential in the development of high-quality UV-curable wood coating.
