  • Haptic feedback combined with movement sonification using a friction sound improves task performance in a virtual throwing task
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces. - : Springer. - 1783-7677 .- 1783-8738. ; 13:4, s. 279-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a study on the effects of auditory- and haptic feedback in a virtual throwing task performed with a point-based haptic device. The main research objective was to investigate if and how task performance and perceived intuitiveness is affected when interactive sonification and/or haptic feedback is used to provide real-time feedback about a movement performed in a 3D virtual environment. Emphasis was put on task solving efficiency and subjective accounts of participants’ experiences of the multimodal interaction in different conditions. The experiment used a within-subjects design in which the participants solved the same task in different conditions: visual-only, visuohaptic, audiovisual and audiovisuohaptic. Two different sound models were implemented and compared. Significantly lower error rates were obtained in the audiovisuohaptic condition involving movement sonification based on a physical model of friction, compared to the visual-only condition. Moreover, a significant increase in perceived intuitiveness was observed for most conditions involving haptic and/or auditory feedback, compared to the visual-only condition. The main finding of this study is that multimodal feedback can not only improve perceived intuitiveness of an interface but that certain combinations of haptic feedback and movement sonification can also contribute with performance-enhancing properties. This highlights the importance of carefully designing feedback combinations for interactive applications.

  • We, Anthrobot : Learning from Human Forms of Interaction and Esprit de Corps to Develop More Diverse Social Robotics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: WHAT SOCIAL ROBOTS CAN AND SHOULD DO. - : IOS Press. - 9781614997078 ; , s. 48-59
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We contend that our relationship with robots is too often seen within a universalistic and individualistic mind-frame. We propose a specific perspective in social robotics that we call anthrobotics. Anthrobotics starts with the choice to consider the human-machine intertwining as a dynamic union of more or less institutionalised collectives rather than separated discrete realities (individual humans, on one side, and discrete individualised machines on the other). We draw on our research in types of social interaction and esprit de corps to imagine more plural and harmonious forms of shared natural-artificial cognitive systems. We propose to look at four types of organised groups: conformative, autonomist, creative, and universalistic, that may provide guiding principles for the design of more diverse anthrobots.

  • Elderly People's Perceptions of a Telehealthcare System : Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity and Observability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 31:3, s. 218-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of telehealthcare systems to promote independent living for elderly people is growing. The results presented in this article, derived from an initial user lab test of a telecare system-GiraffPlus-indicate that the crucial factor for adoption of telehealthcare systems is not usability but the system's ability to support autonomy in everyday life. Eleven users tested the usability and reported what they perceived as possible benefits of having such a system at home. To support autonomy, customization is crucial for the system to be perceived as meaningful for the individual. Our analysis confirms previous research. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • Family-owned manufacturing SMEs and innovativeness : A comparison between within-family successions and external takeovers
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy. - : Elsevier. - 1877-8585 .- 1877-8593. ; 3:3, s. 162-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to compare within-family successions and external-party takeovers in family-owned manufacturing SMEs to determine potential differences in how they are perceived and managed. This paper focuses on two long-term aspects of family businesses – their succession and their ability to innovate – defining innovativeness as an aspect of organisational culture. Based on ten case studies, the paper concludes that the values related to a firm’s context, influenced by the divesting party as well as by the choice of successor, create inertia, to the extent that only minor changes in innovation orientation are possible. External owners may focus to a greater extent on growth and new ways of innovating, while family-succeeded firms diversify so as not to abandon previous businesses. Intermediating factors, such as customer involvement, type of SME, and the acquirers’ motives, influence the innovative organisational culture and create explanatory links to innovation intensity and methodologies of innovation.

  • View and management of innovativeness upon succession in family-owned SMEs
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation Management. - Amsterdam, Netherlands : Elsevier. - 1363-9196 .- 1757-5877. ; 15:3, s. 617-640
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into how the successors of family-owned manufacturing SMEs view and manage innovativeness. Research into company takeovers mainly focuses on large companies and little is known about innovativeness in research on family-owned businesses, often SMEs. This paper presents findings from ten company successions, five of which describe family successions and five external ones. The paper points to that there is little difference in how various types of successor view and manage innovativeness. A successor is chosen with care and this also influences the view and management of innovativeness; other criteria seem to apply in the succession and radical changes can only be introduced if a number of contextual factors are managed properly. The paper also indicates that while financial constraints may limit innovations, a strong financial situation is not an antecedent for innovativeness.

  • The concept of the liquid sampling and hot rolling method for determination of macro inclusion characteristics in steel
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Steel Research International. - Düsseldorf : Verlag Stahleisen. - 1611-3683 .- 1869-344X. ; 77:3, s. 177-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel method for determination of semi-macro and macro size distributions of inclusions in steel from samples in ladle, tundish and mould has been developed. The samples are worked and surface treated before inspection. Mainly immersed ultrasonic scanning is performed to determine the semi-macro and macro inclusion content. The LSHR method has been tested in several different steel plants and for different steel grades. It is concluded that new information regarding large inclusions during steelmaking can be obtained using the method.

  • Design for versatility : the changing face of workspaces for collaborative design
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings ICED 05, the 15th International Conference on Engineering Design. - Melbourne : The Institution of Engineers, Australia. - 9780858257887
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a fiercely competitive business climate, which is increasingly characterized by global alliances, partnerships and outsourcing agreements, companies struggle to decrease the negative impact of geographic distance on development efforts. The role of workspaces for collaborative design is gaining considerable attention, and there is currently an increasing interest in moving from individual tools or technologies to a more inclusive view of collaborative workspaces. This paper reports on the underlying motivation and justification for a new collaborative design studio at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The studio provides a rapid-response environment, in which the significance of issues raised through ethnographic observations of engineering work can be evaluated and solutions offered.

  • Demands on engineering design culture for implementing functional products
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings ICED 05, the 15th International Conference on Engineering Design, Melbourne, Australia, 15.-18.08.2005. - Glasgow, United Kingdom : The Design Society. - 0858257882 ; , s. 172-173
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial product development focused companies, such as car manufacturers, have traditionally developed and sold hardware products. In professional business-to-business relations, the integration of hardware and software with services has been identified as a shift in focus in the seller-buyer relationship from hardware development to function development and the way a sustainable economic performance could be achieved. Therefore, the common perception today of where the product is mainly hardware only, needs to be expanded to include a definition where it does not even have to have any hardware at all. Expanding the product definition therefore places additional demands on the design and development of hardware, software and services that may all be part of the functional product. Further, this article discusses how customer requirements need to be handled when developing a total offer in the form of a functional product. Finally, the traits needed in the engineer who is to develop it while being part of amulti-cultural team are discussed, possibly a geographically distributed team.
