  • Diagnosis using service oriented architectures (SOA)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Industrial Informatics, 2007 5th IEEE International Conference on  (Volume: 2). - : IEEE. - 9781424408511 - 9781424408511 ; , s. 1203-1208
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an emergent approach to industrial control that accompanies new industrial paradigms in the response to the continuously changing socio-economic challenges posed to modern and future enterprises. Maximizing the profit under adverse market conditions is also a matter of cost cut and the use of distributed and intelligent devices with efficient diagnosis mechanisms can help improving equipment's uptime either by reacting before a breakdown or recovering gracefully from failures.

  • The PRIME Semantic Language: Plug and Produce in Standard- based Manufacturing Production Systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nowadays manufacturing production systems are becoming more and more responsive in order to succeed in ahighly unstable environment. The capability of a production system to effectively and efficiently adapt and evolveto face the changing requirements – imposed by volatile and dynamic global markets – is a necessary conditionto enable manufacturing enterprises to be agile. Since the agility of a manufacturing enterprise is always limitedby the agility of its own building blocks than it needs to be spread over the whole enterprise including the operationand information technologies (OT/IT). Turning to production systems, one of the significant challenges isrepresented by the possibility to provide easy and rapid (re-)configuration of their internal components and/orprocesses. Innovative technologies and paradigms have been explored during the years that combined with theincreasing advancement in manufacturing technologies enable the implementation of the “plug and produce”paradigm. The “plug and produce” paradigm is the foundation of any agile production system, since to be agile itis inevitably required to reduce the installation and (re-)engineering activities time – changing/adapting the systemto new requirements – while promoting configuration rather than programming. Therefore, the “plug andproduce” paradigm is a necessary but not sufficient condition for implementing agile production systems. Modernproduction systems are typically known for their plethora of heterogeneous component/equipment. In this complexscenario, the implementation of the “plug and produce” paradigm implies the existence of a well-definedontological model to support components/equipment abstraction with the objective to allow interactions, collaboration and knowledge sharing between them. The PRIME semantic language specifies the semanticstructure for the knowledge models and overall system communication language.

  • Visualization tool to support multi-agent mechatronic based systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 4372-4377
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing interest from industry in distributed architectures since they promote a plug-and-produce and robust environment, where adaptability and fault tolerance are native. Much research has been conducted in this field mainly supported by multi-agent and service oriented technologies. Nevertheless the retrieval and visualization of information in distributed systems is a relatively unexplored area. Although the dynamic nature of the multi-agent systems allows gathering information in a prompt manner, doing so might affect the performance of the mechatronic agents. In this sense, the present paper details the architecture of a visualization tool that introduces a reliable but non-invasive approach to retrieve data from distributed platforms as well as a new way to visualize and interpret the information gathered from mechatronic based systems.

  • A standard-based software infrastructure to support energy efficiency using renewable energy sources
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Industrial Electronics (ISIE), 2011 IEEE International Symposium on. - : IEEE. - 9781424493104 - 9781424493111 ; , s. 1175-1180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The NEMO&CODED (NEMO) project targets the development of a standard-based software infrastructure, aiming to provide the appropriate support to manage energy-related devices considering an environment where energy is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed in a rational and environmentally correct way. This paper presents and discusses the results achieved so far by the project, with special emphasis on the implementation of a web services-based wrapper to seamlessly integrate new energy sources (renewable ones) into the NEMO network. Such a wrapper relies on the adoption of two standards, namely DPWS and the IEC 61850 series. The former handles service oriented related aspects whilst the latter helps to support the interoperability of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), through the use of the Abstract Communication Service Interface (ACSI) and the Substation Configuration Language (SCL). Main problems raised and solutions found are also included in the paper as well as the future steps to be performed.

  • Towards a service based infrastructure to improve efficiency into energy systems : The NEMO&CODED quest
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 10th IFAC Workshop on Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (2010). - : International Federation of Automatic Control. - 9783902661777 ; , s. 162-167
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy efficiency is absolutely one of the greatest challenges of our days. The whole chain of actors involved in the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy are not only concerned but also acting towards a more rational and efficient use of energy. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources also reflects the seriousness of the subject and helps to set up the current landscape on this matter. This is the rationale driving the NEMO&CODED (NEMO) project, which targets the development of a software infrastructure, based on web services and semantic resources aiming to provide the appropriate support to manage energy-related devices (e.g. renewable energy sources, smart meters, etc.) considering an environment where energy is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed in a rational and environmentally correct way. This shall be attained through the comprehensive implementation and instantiation of computational intelligence at resource level and the development of mechanisms that enable the seamless, and online, control/monitoring of aggregations of resources. This paper discusses the NEMO project, namely its vision, goals, preliminary software architecture, evaluation and assessment scenarios, and also points out the further work (research, design, and implementation) to be performed.

  • A co-evolving diagnostic algorithm for evolvable production systems : A case of learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 10th IFAC Workshop on Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (2010). - : International Federation of Automatic Control. - 9783902661777 ; , s. 126-131
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the systematic implantation and acceptance of IT in the shop-floor a wide range of Production Paradigms have emerged that exploring these technological novelties promise to revolutionize the way current plant floor operate and react to emerging opportunities and disturbances. With the increase of distributed and autonomous components that interact in the execution of processes current diagnostic approaches will soon be insufficient. While current system dynamics are complex and to a certain extent unpredictable the adoption of the next generation of approaches and technologies comes at the cost of an yet increased complexity. The peer to peer nature of the interactions and the evolving nature of the future systems' structure require a co-evolving regulatory mechanism that to a great deal has to be implemented under the scope of monitoring and diagnosis. In this article a diagnostic algorithm that has the ability to co-evolve with the remaining system, through learning and adaptation to the operational conditions, is presented and discussed.

  • A generic communication interface for DPWS-based web services
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Industrial Informatics, 2008. INDIN 2008. 6th IEEE International Conference on. - : IEEE. - 9781424421701 - 9781424421718 ; , s. 762-767
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To withstand future socio-economic challenges new approaches to industrial control have emerged. These methodologies require however the underlying systems to be fully integrated from an information technology point of view. Not all existing distributed technologies have proven successful in managing interoperability constraints. The research in service oriented architectures has shown promising results in managing information exchange between heterogeneous systems and in hiding their complexity by providing platform agnostic service descriptions. However in highly dynamic systems where changes are to happen in runtime implementation issues arise. Typically the heterogeneity of most systems causes reprogramming to happen periodically to accommodate changes and the dimension of the code often boosts. This paper addresses this problematic presenting a generic communication interface for web services that contributes to ease these problems.

  • A high level e-maintenance architecture to support on-site teams
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Enterprise and Work Innovation Studies. - 1646-1223. ; 4, s. 129-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emergent architectures and paradigms targeting reconfigurable manufacturing systems increasingly rely on intelligent modules to maximize the robustness and responsiveness of modern installations. Although intelligent behaviour significantly minimizes the occurrence of faults and breakdowns it does not exclude them nor can prevent equipment’s normal wear. Adequate maintenance is fundamental to extend equipments’ life cycle. It is of major importance the ability of each intelligent device to take an active role in maintenance support. Further this paradigm shift towards “embedded intelligence”, supported by cross platform technologies, induces relevant organizational and functional changes on local maintenance teams. On the one hand, the possibility of outsourcing maintenance activities, with the warranty of a timely response, through the use of pervasive networking technologies and, on the other hand, the optimization of local maintenance staff are some examples of how IT is changing the scenario in maintenance. The concept of e-maintenance is, in this context, emerging as a new discipline with defined socio-economic challenges. This paper proposes a high level maintenance architecture supporting maintenance teams’ management and offering contextualized operational support. All the functionalities hosted by the architecture are offered to the remaining system as network services. Any intelligent module, implementing the services’ interface, can report diagnostic, prognostic and maintenance recommendations that enable the core of the platform to decide on the best course of action.

  • An agent-based interaction-oriented shop floor to support emergent diagnosis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings INDIN 20108th IEEE International Conferenceon Industrial Informatics, Osaka University Nakanoshima Center, Osaka, Japan, 13 - 16 July, 2010. - : IEEE. - 9781424472987 ; , s. 189-194
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emerging production paradigms, potentiated by the advances in Information Technologies (IT), especially in web related standards and technologies as well as the progressive acceptance of the multiagent systems (MAS) concept and related technologies, envision collections of modules whose individual and collective function adapts and evolves ensuring the fitness and adequacy of the shop floor in tackling profitable but volatile business opportunities. Despite the richness of the interactions and the effort set in modeling them, their potential to favor fault propagation and interference, in these complex environments, has been ignored from a diagnostic point of view. To avoid corrupting the distributed nature of the system any diagnostic method/tool should necessarily adapt and evolve. This implies that the diagnostic model should emerge in system rather than being imposed. In the present paper the authors contend that there is added value in further considering interactions and modeling the network effect of interactions for the purpose of diagnosing the system. In this context, an agent-based architecture is proposed to support an emergent diagnostic model.
