  • Evaluation of surface EMG-based recognition algorithms for decoding hand movements
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing. - : Springer. - 0140-0118 .- 1741-0444. ; 58:1, s. 83-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR) to decode limb movements is an important advancement regarding the control of powered prostheses. However, this technology is not yet in wide clinical use. Improvements in MPR could potentially increase the functionality of powered prostheses. To this purpose, offline accuracy and processing time were measured over 44 features using six classifiers with the aim of determining new configurations of features and classifiers to improve the accuracy and response time of prosthetics control. An efficient feature set (FS: waveform length, correlation coefficient, Hjorth Parameters) was found to improve the motion recognition accuracy. Using the proposed FS significantly increased the performance of linear discriminant analysis, K-nearest neighbor, maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), and support vector machine by 5.5%, 5.7%, 6.3%, and 6.2%, respectively, when compared with the Hudgins’ set. Using the FS with MLE provided the largest improvement in offline accuracy over the Hudgins feature set, with minimal effect on the processing time. Among the 44 features tested, logarithmic root mean square and normalized logarithmic energy yielded the highest recognition rates (above 95%). We anticipate that this work will contribute to the development of more accurate surface EMG-based motor decoding systems for the control prosthetic hands. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

  • Bridging the Terahertz Gap : Photonics-assisted Free-Space Communications from the Submillimeter-Wave to the Mid-Infrared
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 40:10, s. 3149-3162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since about one and half centuries ago, at the dawn of modern communications, the radio and the optics have been two separate electromagnetic spectrum regions to carry data. Differentiated by their generation/detection methods and propagation properties, the two paths have evolved almost independently until today. The optical technologies dominate the long-distance and high-speed terrestrial wireline communications through fiber-optic telecom systems, whereas the radio technologies have mainly dominated the short- to medium-range wireless scenarios. Now, these two separate counterparts are both facing a sign of saturation in their respective roadmap horizons, particularly in the segment of free-space communications. The optical technologies are extending into the mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) regimes to achieve better propagation performance through the dynamic atmospheric channels. Radio technologies strive for higher frequencies like the millimeter-wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) to gain broader bandwidth. The boundary between the two is becoming blurred and intercrossed. During the past few years, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in free-space transmission supporting very high data rates, many achieved with the assistance of photonics. This paper focuses on such photonics-assisted free-space communication technologies in both the lower and upper sides of the THz gap and provides a detailed review of recent research and development activities on some of the key enabling technologies. Our recent experimental demonstrations of high-speed free-space transmissions in both frequency regions are also presented as examples to show the system requirements for device characteristics and digital signal processing (DSP) performance.

  • Statistical quality of experience analysis: on planning the sample size and statistical significance testing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). - SPIE/IS&T : IS&T - the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. - 1017-9909 .- 1560-229X. ; 27:5, s. 053013-1-053013-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes how an experimenter can balance errors in subjective video quality tests betweenthe statistical power of finding an effect if it is there and not claiming that an effect is there if the effect is not there,i.e., balancing Type I and Type II errors. The risk of committing Type I errors increases with the number ofcomparisons that are performed in statistical tests. We will show that when controlling for this and at thesame time keeping the power of the experiment at a reasonably high level, it is unlikely that the number oftest subjects that are normally used and recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU),i.e., 15 is sufficient but the number used by the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG), i.e., 24 is more likelyto be sufficient. Examples will also be given for the influence of Type I error on the statistical significance ofcomparing objective metrics by correlation. We also present a comparison between parametric and nonparametricstatistics. The comparison targets the question whether we would reach different conclusions on the statisticaldifference between the video quality ratings of different video clips in a subjective test, based on thecomparison between the student T-test and the Mann–Whitney U-test. We found that there was hardly a differencewhen few comparisons are compensated for, i.e., then almost the same conclusions are reached. Whenthe number of comparisons is increased, then larger and larger differences between the two methods arerevealed. In these cases, the parametric T-test gives clearly more significant cases, than the nonparametrictest, which makes it more important to investigate whether the assumptions are met for performing a certaintest.

  • Feedforward Neural Network-Based EVM Estimation : Impairment Tolerance in Coherent Optical Systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 1077-260X .- 1558-4542. ; 28:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Error vector magnitude (EVM) is commonly used for evaluating the quality of m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (mQAM) signals. Recently proposed deep learning techniques for EVM estimation extend the functionality of conventional optical performance monitoring (OPM). In this article, we evaluate the tolerance of our developed EVM estimation scheme against various impairments in coherent optical systems. In particular, we analyze the signal quality monitoring capabilities in the presence of residual in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance, fiber nonlinearity, and laser phase noise. We use feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) to extract the EVM information from amplitude histograms of 100 symbols per IQ cluster signal sequence captured before carrier phase recovery. We perform simulations of the considered impairments, along with an experimental investigation of the impact of laser phase noise. To investigate the tolerance of the EVM estimation scheme to each impairment type, we compare the accuracy for three training methods: 1) training without impairment, 2) training one model for all impairments, and 3) training an independent model for each impairment. Results indicate a good generalization of the proposed EVM estimation scheme, thus providing a valuable reference for developing next-generation intelligent OPM systems.

  • Carrier Phase Recovery Algorithms for Coherent Optical Circular mQAM Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 34:11, s. 2717-2723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase noise tolerance of circular multilevel quadrature amplitude modulation (C-mQAM) constellations employing different carrier phase recovery (CPR) algorithms is studied. A differential decoding scheme and a bit mapping for this type of constellations are proposed. A novel CPR scheme for C-mQAM constellations is also presented. The particular distribution of the constellation points in a C-mQAM signal is exploited to reduce the required Nth power for the removal of the modulation component by a factor of two. Hence, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is drastically reduced. The combined linewidth symbol duration product (Delta nu T-s) tolerance of different CPR algorithms for C-mQAM constellations is studied and compared with the proposed CPR scheme. The results are analyzed at 3.8e-3 and 1e-2 bit error rate forward error correction limits. The proposed CPR scheme achieves similar Delta nu Ts tolerance compared to single stage BPS algorithm while its computational complexity is reduced by group factors of 27.2 vertical bar 32.3, and 30.5 vertical bar 32.6 (in the form of multipliers vertical bar adders) for C-16QAM and C-64QAM, respectively.

  • Low-power listening goes multi-channel
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems, DCOSS 2014. ; , s. 2-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploiting multiple radio channels for communication has been long known as a practical way to mitigate interference in wireless settings. In Wireless Sensor Networks, however, multi-channel solutions have not reached their full potential: the MAC layers included in TinyOS or the Contiki OS for example are mostly single-channel. The literature offers a number of interesting solutions, but experimental results were often too few to build confidence. We propose a practical extension of low-power listening, MiCMAC, that performs channel hopping, operates in a distributed way, and is independent of upper layers of the protocol stack. The above properties make it easy to deploy in a variety of scenarios, without any extra configuration/scheduling/channel selection hassle. We implement our solution in Contiki and evaluate it in a 97-node~testbed while running a complete, out-of-the-box low-power IPv6 communication stack (UDP/RPL/6LoWPAN). Our experimental results demonstrate increased resilience to emulated WiFi interference (e.g., data yield kept above 90% when Contiki MAC drops in the 40% range). In noiseless environments, MiCMAC keeps the overhead low in comparison to Contiki MAC, achieving performance as high as 99% data yield along with sub-percent duty cycle and sub-second latency for a 1-minute inter-packet interval data collection. © 2014 IEEE.

  • Modelling the Level of Trust in a Cooperative Automated Vehicle Control System
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems (Print). - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; 19:4, s. 1267-1247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is a key technology for achieving increased perception for automated vehicles, where the communication enables virtual sensing by means of sensors in other vehicles. In addition, this technology also allows detection and recognition of objects that are out-of-sight. This paper presents a trust system that allows a cooperative and automated vehicle to make more reliable and safe decisions. The system evaluates the current situation and generates a trust index indicating the level of trust in the environment, the ego vehicle, and the surrounding vehicles. This research goes beyond secure communication and concerns the verification of the received data on a system level. The results show that the proposed method is capable of correctly identifying various traffic situations and how the trust index is used while manoeuvring in a platoon merge scenario.

  • Multi-Constellation/Multi-Frequency GNSS Signal Degradation Due to Foliage and Reflective Environments †
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Engineering Proceedings. - 2673-4591. ; 54:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Present day GNSS offers a variety of signals from different satellite constellations and at various frequencies. This paper is based on the work conducted in the project SiL 2.0 and will focus on the study of multi-constellation/multi-frequency GNSS signals as received on top of construction equipment as part of the SiL 2.0 dissemination solution. This paper aims to study the impact of foliage and reflective environments on the various signals of multi-constellation GNSS with a focus on GPS and Galileo. Signal strength indicators (SSI) have been used as a measure to understand the shadowing environment around a stationary GNSS antenna mounted on an excavator. It is quite clear from the analysis that traditional GPS L2 signals, C2W and L2W, are weaker in strength than the L2C and L1 C/A signals, and this is found to be consistent for all of the GPS satellites. The effect of signal degradation due to bending over sharp metallic edges is also discussed.
