  • Modeling and Estimation of Phase Noise in Oscillators with Colored Noise Sources
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The continuous increase in demand for higher data rates due to applications with massive number of users motivates the design of faster and more spectrum efficient communication systems. In theory, the current communication systems must be able to operate close to Shannon capacity bounds. However, the real systems perform below capacity limits, mainly due to channel estimation error and hardware impairments that have been neglected by idealistic or simplistic assumptions on the imperfections. Oscillator phase noise is one of the hardware impairments that is becoming a limiting factor in high data rate digital communication systems. Phase noise severely limits the performance of systems that employ dense constellations. Moreover, the level of phase noise (at a given off-set frequency) increases with carrier frequency which means that the problem of phase noise may be even more severe in systems with high carrier frequency. The focus of this thesis is on finding accurate statistical models of phase noise, as well as the design of efficient algorithms to mitigate the effect of this phenomenon on the performance of modern communication systems. First we derive the statistics of phase noise with white and colored noise sources in free-running and phase-locked-loop-stabilized oscillators. We investigate the relation between real oscillator phase noise measurements and the performance of communication systems by means of the proposed model. Our findings can be used by hardware and frequency generator designers to better understand the effect of phase noise with different sources on the system performance and optimize their design criteria respectively. Then, we study the design of algorithms for estimation of phase noise with colored noise sources. A soft-input maximum a posteriori phase noise estimator and a modified soft-input extended Kalman smoother are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms is compared against that of those studied in the literature, in terms of mean square error of phase noise estimation, and symbol error rate of the considered communication system. The comparisons show that considerable performance gains can be achieved by designing estimators that employ correct knowledge of the phase noise statistics. The performance improvement is more significant in low-SNR or low-pilot density scenarios.

  • Beyond-application datasets and automated fair benchmarking
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Beyond-application perception datasets are generalised datasets that emphasise the fundamental components of good machine perception data. When analysing the history of perception datatsets, notable trends suggest that design of the dataset typically aligns with an application goal. Instead of focusing on a specific application, beyond-application datasets instead look at capturing high-quality, high-volume data from a highly kinematic environment, for the purpose of aiding algorithm development and testing in general. Algorithm benchmarking is a cornerstone of autonomous systems development, and allows developers to demonstrate their results in a comparative manner. However, most benchmarking systems allow developers to use their own hardware or select favourable data. There is also little focus on run time performance and consistency, with benchmarking systems instead showcasing algorithm accuracy. By combining both beyond-application dataset generation and methods for fair benchmarking, there is also the dilemma of how to provide the dataset to developers for this benchmarking, as the result of a high-volume, high-quality dataset generation is a significant increase in dataset size when compared to traditional perception datasets. This thesis presents the first results of attempting the creation of such a dataset. The dataset was built using a maritime platform, selected due to the highly dynamic environment presented on water. The design and initial testing of this platform is detailed, as well as as methods of sensor validation. Continuing, the thesis then presents a method of fair benchmarking, by utilising remote containerisation in a way that allows developers to present their software to the dataset, instead of having to first locally store a copy. To test this dataset and automatic online benchmarking, a number of reference algorithms were required for initial results. Three algorithms were built, using the data from three different sensors captured on the maritime platform. Each algorithm calculates vessel odometry, and the automatic benchmarking system was utilised to show the accuracy and run-time performance of these algorithms. It was found that the containerised approach alleviated data management concerns, prevented inflated accuracy results, and demonstrated precisely how computationally intensive each algorithm was.

  • Aspects of Power Allocation in Massive MIMO
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The past decades have seen a rapid growth of mobile data trac, both in terms of connected devices and data rate. To satisfy the ever growing data trac demand in wireless communication systems, the current cellular systems have to be redesigned to increase both spectral eciency and energy eciency. Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) is one solution that satisfy both requirements. In massive MIMO systems, hundreds of antennas are employed at the base station to provide service to many users at the same time and frequency. This enables the system to serve the users with uniformly good quality of service simultaneously, with low-cost hardware and without using extra bandwidth and energy. To achieve this, proper resource allocation is needed. Among the available resources, transmit power is one of the most important degree of freedom to control the spectral eciency and energy eciency. Due to the use of excessive number of antennas and low-end hardware at the base station, new aspects of power allocation compared to current systems arises. In the rst part of the thesis, a new uplink power allocation schemes that based on long term channel statistics is proposed. Since quality of the channel estimates is crucial in massive MIMO, in addition to data power allocation, joint power allocation that includes the pilot power as additional variable should be considered. Therefore a new framework for power allocation that matches practical systems is developed, as the methods developed in the literature cannot be applied directly to massive MIMO systems. Simulation results conrm the advantages brought by the the proposed new framework. In the second part of the thesis, we investigate the eects of using low-end ampliers at the base stations. The non-linear behavior of power consumption in these ampliers changes the power consumption model at the base station, thereby changes the power allocation. Two dierent scenarios are investigated and both results show that a certain number of antennas can be turned o in low load scenarios.

  • Over the air calibration of transmitter distortion for active antenna arrays
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Radar systems for air surveillance have long utilised large antenna arrays to generate high enough gain for a narrow enough transmitted beam. In most modern systems this is accomplished through the use of large active electronically steered antenna arrays. Calibrating a large active antenna array is a challenging endeavour. Distorting effects stemming from the amplifying circuitry can have a non-negligible effect on the transmitted signal, and the effects can vary across the array. In modern and future transmitter arrays, individually controlled antenna elements will be a feature. With such systems, distortion that varies over an array can be combatted. One challenge is how to collect data about what signal is being transmitted and in what way the actual signal differs from the desired transmitted signal. The work presented in this thesis studies aspects of characterising a model describing the distortion generated in an active antenna array using an over the air channel. Specifically, the first included article presents a method where signals collected using an over the air channel generated by targets of opportunity are used to estimate the parameters of a non-linearly parametrised model for a radar transmitter. In this article, the radar is assumed to transmit different signals on each antenna element. The second included article studies conditions for identifiability for the setup in the first article as well as for other similar setups. These works constitute the second part of this thesis. To put this work into context, the first part of this thesis presents an overview of the problems caused by distortion in a radar system. This is investigated under different modelling assumptions and for radars operating in a number of different modes.

  • CMOS Data Converters for Closed-Loop mmWave Transmitters
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the increased amount of data consumed in mobile communication systems, new solutions for the infrastructure are needed. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is seen as a key enabler for providing this increased capacity. With the use of a large number of transmitters, the cost of each transmitter must be low. Closed-loop transmitters, featuring high-speed data converters is a promising option for achieving this reduced unit cost. In this thesis, both digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters suitable for wideband operation in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO transmitters are demonstrated. A 2×6 bit radio frequency digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC)-based in-phase quadrature (IQ) modulator is demonstrated as a compact building block, that to a large extent realizes the transmit path in a closed-loop mmWave transmitter. The evaluation of an successive-approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is also presented in this thesis. Methods for connecting simulated and measured performance has been studied in order to achieve a better understanding about the alternating comparator topology. These contributions show great potential for enabling closed-loop mmWave transmitters for massive MIMO transmitter realizations.

  • Aspects of Massive MIMO
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Next generation cellular wireless technology faces tough demands: increasing the throughput and reliability without consuming more resources, be it spectrum or energy. Massive mimo (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) has proven, both in theory and practice, that it is up for the challenge. Massive mimo can offer uniformly good service to many users using low-end hardware, simultaneously, without increasing the radiated power compared to contemporary system. In Massive mimo, the base stations are equipped with hundreds of antennas. This abundance of antennas brings many new, interesting aspects compared to single-user mimo and multi-user mimo. Some issues of older technologies are nonexistent in massive mimo, while new issues in need of solutions arise. This thesis considers two aspects, and how these aspects differ in a massive mimo context: physical layer security and transmission of system information. First, it is shown that a jammer with a large number of antennas can outperform a traditional, single-antenna jammer in degrading the legitimate link. The excess of antennas gives the jammer opportunity to find and exploit structure in signals to improve its jamming capability. Second, for transmission of system information, the vast number of antennas prove useful even when the base station does not have any channel state information, because of the increased availability of space-time coding. We show how transmission without channel state information can be done in massive mimo by using a fixed precoding matrix to reduce the pilot overhead and simultaneously apply space-time block coding to use the excess of antennas for spatial diversity.

  • On Provably Correct Decision-Making for Automated Driving
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The introduction of driving automation in road vehicles can potentially reduce road traffic crashes and significantly improve road safety. Automation in road vehicles also brings several other benefits such as the possibility to provide independent mobility for people who cannot and/or should not drive. Many different hardware and software components (e.g. sensing, decision-making, actuation, and control) interact to solve the autonomous driving task. Correctness of such automated driving systems is crucial as incorrect behaviour may have catastrophic consequences. Autonomous vehicles operate in complex and dynamic environments, which requires decision-making and planning at different levels. The aim of such decision-making components in these systems is to make safe decisions at all times. The challenge of safety verification of these systems is crucial for the commercial deployment of full autonomy in vehicles. Testing for safety is expensive, impractical, and can never guarantee the absence of errors. In contrast, formal methods , which are techniques that use rigorous mathematical models to build hardware and software systems can provide a mathematical proof of the correctness of the system. The focus of this thesis is to address some of the challenges in the safety verification of decision-making in automated driving systems. A central question here is how to establish formal verification as an efficient tool for automated driving software development. A key finding is the need for an integrated formal approach to prove correctness and to provide a complete safety argument. This thesis provides insights into how three different formal verification approaches, namely supervisory control theory, model checking, and deductive verification differ in their application to automated driving and identifies the challenges associated with each method. It identifies the need for the introduction of more rigour in the requirement refinement process and presents one possible solution by using a formal model-based safety analysis approach. To address challenges in the manual modelling process, a possible solution by automatically learning formal models directly from code is proposed.

  • Modelling and Simulation for Evaluation of Cooperative Intelligent Transport System Functions
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Future vehicles are expected to be equipped with wireless communication technology, that enables them to be “connected” to each others and road infrastructures. Complementing current autonomous vehicles and automated driving systems, the wireless communication allows the vehicles to interact, cooperate, and be aware of its surroundings beyond their own sensors’ range. Such sys- tems are often referred to as Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), which aims to provide extra safety, efficiency, and sustainability to transporta- tion systems. Several C-ITS applications are under development and will require thorough testing and evaluation before their deployment in the real-world. C- ITS depend on several sub-systems, which increase their complexity, and makes them difficult to evaluate.Simulations are often used to evaluate many different automotive applications, including C-ITS. Although they have been used extensively, simulation tools dedicated to determine all aspects of C-ITS are rare, especially human factors aspects, which are often ignored. The majority of the simulation tools for C-ITS rely heavily on different combinations of network and traffic simulators. The human factors issues have been covered in only a few C-ITS simulation tools, that involve a driving simulator. Therefore, in this thesis, a C-ITS simulation framework that combines driving, network, and traffic simulators is presented. The simulation framework is able to evaluate C-ITS applications from three perspectives; a) human driver; b) wireless communication; and c) traffic systems.Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and its applications are chosen as the first set of C-ITS functions to be evaluated. Example scenarios from CACC and platoon merging applications are presented, and used as test cases for the simulation framework, as well as to elaborate potential usages of it. Moreover, approaches, results, and challenges from composing the simulation framework are presented and discussed. The results shows the usefulness of the proposed simulation framework.

  • Characterization and Compensation of Thermal Effects in GaN HEMT Technologies
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Further advancements with GaN based technologies relies on the ability to handle the heat flux, which consequently arises from the high power density. Advanced cooling techniques and thermal optimization of the technology are therefore prioritized research areas. Characterization techniques play a key role in the development of new cooling solutions, since these rely on accurate measurements of e.g. the temperature of the device. This thesis covers techniques to electrically characterize the lateral and vertical heat properties in GaN, and a temperature compensation technique for GaN MMICs. The first part outlines a methodology to electrically extract the thermal resistance of a GaN resistor without risking distortion from field induced electron trapping effects, which are exhibited by GaN heterostructures. The technique uses differential resistance measurements to identify a suitable resistor geometry, which minimizes trapping effects while enhancing the self-heating. Such conditions are crucial for electrical methods since these exploit the self- heating for a thermal analysis. Furthermore, a test structure and measurement method to electrically characterize the lateral heat spread was designed and evaluated. The structure is implemented with a thermal sensor, which utilizes the temperature-dependent IV characteristics of a GaN resistor, making it suitable for integration in GaN MMICs. The transient response can be obtained to extract the thermal time constants and propagation delay of the heat spread. At higher ambient temperatures, the propagation delay increases and the thermal coupling is increased. Lastly, a biasing technique to compensate for thermal degradation of the RF performance of an LNA was developed. By utilizing the gate- and drain voltage dependence of the RF performance, a constant gain against increasing temperature can e.g. be achieved.

  • Enhancing the reliability of GNSS carrier phase measurements for precise positioning applications
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Global Navigation Satellite System’s (GNSS) position, navigation and time (PNT) is used worldwide for numerous applications. With the advent of sophisticated techniques such as real time kinematic (RTK), precise point positioning (PPP) and the combination RTK-PPP, GNSS positioning using carrier phase data can now achieve centimetre to millimeter levels of accuracy in real time both in static or kinematic mode on land and decimeter to centimeter levels of positioning accuracy on the sea. In a post processing mode this accuracy can go down to sub-millimeter. However, the different error sources of GNSS continue to pose a hindrance to this. Even in a differential mode of operation, while error sources such as clocks and troposphere may cancel out for short baselines, rapid variations in ionosphere can cause loss of lock of the GNSS receiver, leading to cycle slips resulting in degraded position estimation. Also, local unmodelled error sources such as diffraction and multipath cannot be handled automatically by standard post processing software since they are dependent on the receiver environment. These error sources lead to large range errors which in turn impacts the position estimation accuracy. This work is a compilation of different studies on GNSS error sources and aims at enhancing the reliability of GNSS carrier phase measurements from a precise positioning perspective.
