  • A High-Throughput Low-Power Soft Bit-Flipping LDPC Decoder in 28 nm FD-SOI
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ESSCIRC 2018 - IEEE 44th European Solid State Circuits Conference. - 9781538654040 ; , s. 290-293
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a low-density parity check (LDPC) decoder using the adaptive degeneration (AD) algorithm with a (3600, 3000) LDPC code, integrated in 1.85 mm^2 in 28 nm FD-SOI. With early termination and variable latency decoding, this decoder achieves an optimal energy efficiency of 0.16 pJ/bit and information throughput of 13.6 Gbps with a core supply voltage of 0.4 V. At a core supply voltage of 1.0 V, it achieves 0.58 pJ/bit energy efficiency and 181 Gbps throughput. With constant latency equal to the maximum number of iterations, it achieves optimal energy efficiency of 0.52 pJ/bit and information throughput of 7.2 Gbps at a supply voltage of 0.55 V, and 1.9 pJ/bit energy and 24 Gbps throughput at 1.0 V. The net coding gain at a bit error rate of 10^(−12) is 8.7 dB.

  • Petabit-per-second data transmission using a chip-scale microcomb ring resonator source
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 16:11, s. 798-802
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical fibre communication is the backbone of the internet. As essential core technologies are approaching their limits of size, speed and energy-efficiency, there is a need for new technologies that offer further scaling of data transmission capacity. Here we show that a single optical frequency-comb source based on a silicon nitride ring resonator supports data capacities in the petabit-per-second regime. We experimentally demonstrate transmission of 1.84 Pbit s–1 over a 37-core, 7.9-km-long fibre using 223 wavelength channels derived from a single microcomb ring resonator producing a stabilized dark-pulse Kerr frequency comb. We also present a theoretical analysis that indicates that a single, chip-scale light source should be able to support 100 Pbit s–1 in massively parallel space-and-wavelength multiplexed data transmission systems. Our findings could mark a shift in the design of future communication systems, targeting device-efficient transmitters and receivers.

  • High spectral efficiency coherent superchannel transmission with soliton microcombs
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 39:13, s. 4367-4373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spectral efficiency (SE) is one of the key metrics for optical communication networks. An important building block for its maximization are optical superchannels, channels that are composed of several subchannels with an aggregate bandwidth larger than the bandwidth of the detector electronics. Superchannels which are routed through the network as a single entity, together with flex-grid routing, allow to more efficiently utilize available bandwidth and eliminate the guard-bands between channels, thus increasing spectral efficiency. In contrast to traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels, subchannel spacing and thus superchannel SE is governed by the linewidth and stability of the frequency spacing of the transmitter lasers. Integrated optical frequency combs, particulary the parametrically generated so-called microcombs, which provide optical lines on a fixed frequency grid are a promising solution for low power superchannel laser sources that allow to minimize the SE loss from suboptimal channel spacing. However, it is extremely challenging to realize micro-combs with sufficient line power, coherence and line spacing that is compatible with electronic bandwidths. Because the line-spacing generated by most devices is above 40 GHz, demonstrations often rely on additional electro-optic frequency shifter or divider stages to avoid digital-to-analog-converter (DAC) performance degradation when operating at high symbol rates. Here we demonstrate a 50-line superchannel from a single 22 GHz line spacing soliton microcomb. We demonstrate 12 Tb/s throughput with > 10 bits/s/Hz SE efficiency after 80 km transmission and 8 Tb/s throughput (SE > 6 bits/s/Hz) after 2100 km, proving the feasibility and benefits of generating high signal quality, broadband waveforms directly from the output of a micro-scale device with a symbol rate close to the comb repetition rate.

  • Impact of Low Frequency Laser Phase Noise in High Order Modulation Formats
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference, IMOC 2019. ; 2019-January
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simulation method and results for laser phase noise where we model the low frequency FM-Noise power spectral density (PSD) with a linear filter with Gaussian response. Several FM-Noise PSD are simulated and used in a back-to-back (B2B) transmission system where the performance of high order modulation formats is obtained in terms of bit error rate (BER) versus optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). Our simulations results show that there is a cutoff region where the low frequency FM-Noise PSD starts introducing a penalty to the system. The simulations are performed by using a pilotbased carrier phase recovery with 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulation formats.

  • Phase Noise Characterization and EEPN of a Full C-Band Tunable Laser in Coherent Optical Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 31:24, s. 1991-1994
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform phase noise characterization of a tunable laser source that is capable of tuning to 103 channels between 1527.6-1568.36 nm with 50 GHz grid spacing between the channels. The measured frequency modulation (FM) noise power spectral density (PSD) is reproduced by simulations in order to investigate the impact of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) in a coherent transmission system. The simulations are performed on a 30 Gbaud channel with 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and using pilot-based carrier phase estimation with 3% overhead. By performing extensive system simulations, we show the impact of different accumulated dispersion. Furthermore, we show the possibility to overcome EEPN related penalties by using a local oscillator (LO) with reduced low frequency phase noise or flat FM-noise PSD profiles with lower linewidths. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

  • 70 Gbps 4-PAM and 56 Gbps 8-PAM Using an 850 nm VCSEL
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 33:7, s. 1395-1401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present 56 Gbps unequalized 8-pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) real-time transmission over 50 m of multimode fiber and 70 Gbps 4-PAM operation with offline equalization. FEC would be necessary in both schemes. The bit-rates are given taking into account the FEC overhead needed to reach a BER below 10-12. The experiments were performed with an 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser with 20 GHz bandwidth and a 22 GHz photoreceiver. We show that 8-PAM modulation requires channel bandwidth comparable with the symbol rate to avoid excessive ISI penalty and that equalization of 4-PAM signal can significantly improve achievable bit-rates.
