  • How can SMEs adopt a new method to advanced maintenance strategies : A Case study approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference Proceedings: 30th International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineering Management (COMADEM 2017). - : University of Central Lancashire. - 9781909755154 ; , s. 155-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Maintenance is crucial to manufacturing operations. In many organisations, the production equipmentrepresents the majority of invested capital, and deterioration of these facilities and equipment increasesproduction costs, reduces product quality. Over recent years the importance of maintenance, and thereforemaintenance management, within manufacturing organisations has grown. The maintenance function hasbecome an increasingly important and complex activity, particularly as automation increases. Theopportunity exists for many organisations to benefit substantially through improvements to theircompetitiveness and profitability by adopting a new approach to maintenance management. Several toolsand technologies including Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM)and more recently e-maintenance have developed under the heading of Advanced Maintenance Strategies. However, the adoption of advanced maintenance strategies and their potential benefits are usuallydemonstrated in large organisations. Unfortunately, the majority of organisations are constrained by thelack of knowledge and understanding on the requirements, which need to be in place before adopting anadvanced maintenance strategy. These are usually classified as Small and Medium Sized Enterprises(SMEs).The research strategy is based on ‘empirical iterations’ using survey secondary data, experts’ interviewsinformation and multiple case studies. The results show that there is a set of recommendations, whichstrongly influence the implementation of an Advanced Maintenance Strategy (AMS) with a Small toMedium Enterprise (SME). Organisations require a structured and integrative approach in order to takeadvantage of a new approach to maintenance management. This paper will propose recommendations forintegrating an AMS into the organisation and provide evidence of a successful implementation.

  • Optimizing Condition Monitoring of Big Data Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2017 International Conference on Data Mining. - : CSREA Press. - 1601324537 ; , s. 127-131
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial communication networks are common in a number of manufacturing organisations. The high availability of these networks is crucial for smooth plant operations. Therefore local and remote diagnostics of these networks is of primary importance in determining issues relating to plant reliability and availability. Condition Monitoring (CM) techniques when connected to a network provide a diagnostic system for remote monitoring of manufacturing equipment. The system monitors the health of the network and the equipment and is therefore able to predict performance. However, this leads to the collection, storage and analyses of large amounts of data, which must provide value. These large data sets are commonly referred to as Big Data. This paper presents a general concept of the use of condition monitoring and big data systems to show how they complement each other to provide valuable data to enhance manufacturing competiveness.

  • Mobile Information Systems in Maintenance Engineering and Asset Management
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Societal Studies. - 2029-2236 .- 2029-2244. ; 8:2, s. 180-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to provide a profound insight into important characteristics with regard to the integration of mobile technology into the area of industrial maintenance. The aspects highlighted in the paper uncover, for instance, acceptance models and best practices, as well as the financial impact of mobile technologies in the domain of interest. Moreover, the paper pinpoints some important characteristics that impede full integration of these technologies into this area. In addition, the economic benefits and the current situation with regard to mobile integration are highlighted. In addition, relevant literature and theories are analysed and discussed. Furthermore, the industrial integration of mobile technologies is outlined. The results indicate that there is a tendency to place an emphasis on the technical aspects of mobile devices rather than on understanding the organisational context, which affects the integration of mobile technologies into this domain. The work provides a thorough understanding of best practices and aspects to consider for the successful integration of mobile technologies in this area. This is because the use of mobile devices enables maintenance staff to gain access to information and services pertaining to the task in hand in real time, as long as some form of network access is provided. Users of these devices thus become mobile actors who dynamically interact with the physical environment in the workplace and support information systems, leading to a faster response to events and improved organizational performance.

  • Product Lifecycle Simulation Applying Semantic Data Management
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Product Lifecycle Management. - 978 90 79182 26 8 - 978 90 79182 27 5 ; , s. 455-464
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product lifecycle simulation (PLCS) has been given ever moreattention as the manufacturers are competing with the quality and lifecyclecosts of their products. Especially, the need of companies to try to get a strongposition in providing services for their products and thus to make themselvesless vulnerable to changes in the market has led to high interest in PLCS. Ashort summary of current status of PLCS is presented especially related to thepoor integration of data in product lifecycle management systems and in PLCS.The potential of applying semantic data management to solve these problems isthoroughly discussed in the light of recent development. A basic roadmap howthe above-described problems could be tackled with open software solutions ispresented. Finally, this paper reviews the emergent Web technologies such asthe Semantic Web framework and the Web services.

  • Analysis of the user experience in a 3D gesture-based supported mobile VR game
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: VRST '17 Proceedings of the 23rd ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Publications. - 9781450355483
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The work presented in this paper, explored the enhancement of User Experience (UX) by introducing a novel gesture-based controller in a mobile multiplayer Virtual Reality (VR) game. Using only the smartphone's RGB camera, the image input was used for both gesture analysis, capable of understanding user actions, as well as segmenting the real hand that was illustrated in the Virtual Environment (VE). Users were also able to share the VR space by cooperating in a survival-strategy scenario. The results from the user studies indicated that both the bare hand controller and the addition of another player in the VR scene, affected the experience for the participants. Users had a stronger feeling of presence in the VE when participated with an other user, and the visual representation of their hand in the VR world made the interactions seem more natural. Even though, there is still a number of limitations, this project nodes this approach capable of offering a natural and engaging solution of VR interaction, capable of rich UX while maintaining a low entry level for the end users.

  • Digitalisation of Maintenance
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2nd International Conference on System Reliability and Safety, ICSRS 2017, 20 - 22 December 2017, Milan, Italy. - : IEEE. - 9781538633229 ; , s. 343-347
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digitalisation of industry and the Industry 4.0 concept with its connected ICTs are important developments for the industry to acquire and implement to be able to keep ahead in competition. In connection to Industry 4.0, the predictive maintenance systems and approach are getting more popular in maintenance. This is because these systems enable a change in the maintenance mind-set where the break-fix mentality is substituted by a predictive maintenance system, such as Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), where the equipment is monitored with the support of ICTs to detect failures before they occur. The Industry 4.0 seems more attainable even for small and medium sized companies because of the drop in the prices of the components of these systems, both in the sensing elements and in the data processing part. The manufacturing methods used in the Integrated Circuit (IC) industry create the possibility to reduce significantly the price tag of sensors and processors. Therefore, the authors go through the CBM approach and technologies, such as Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) sensors as well as such emerging ICTs as the Cloud and Big data. These could offer a turning point in traditional maintenance by widening the amount of monitored assets, allowing multiple parameters to be measured and analysed and enabling wireless and immediate data access across the globe.

  • Control-Theoretical Software Adaptation : A Systematic Literature Review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering. - : IEEE. - 0098-5589 .- 1939-3520. ; 44:8, s. 784-810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern software applications are subject to uncertain operating conditions, such as dynamics in the availability of services and variations of system goals. Consequently, runtime changes cannot be ignored, but often cannot be predicted at design time. Control theory has been identified as a principled way of addressing runtime changes and it has been applied successfully to modify the structure and behavior of software applications. Most of the times, however, the adaptation targeted the resources that the software has available for execution (CPU, storage, etc.) more than the software application itself. This paper investigates the research efforts that have been conducted to make software adaptable by modifying the software rather than the resource allocated to its execution. This paper aims to identify: the focus of research on control-theoretical software adaptation; how software is modeled and what control mechanisms are used to adapt software; what software qualities and controller guarantees are considered. To that end, we performed a systematic literature review in which we extracted data from 42 primary studies selected from 1512 papers that resulted from an automatic search. The results of our investigation show that even though the behavior of software is considered non-linear, research efforts use linear models to represent it, with some success. Also, the control strategies that are most often considered are classic control, mostly in the form of Proportional and Integral controllers, and Model Predictive Control. The paper also discusses sensing and actuating strategies that are prominent for software adaptation and the (often neglected) proof of formal properties. Finally, we distill open challenges for control-theoretical software adaptation.

  • Multiformalism techniques for critical infrastructure modeling
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of System of Systems Engineering. - 1748-0671 .- 1748-068X. ; 2:1, s. 19-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes an approach to use multiformalism techniques for critical infrastructure modelling. To this aim, the state of the art of related works on the subject is surveyed and a general scheme for intra and inter infrastructure models is described. Multiformalism approaches allow modellers to adapt the choice of formal languages to the nature, complexity and abstraction layer of the subsystems to be modelled. Another advantage is the possibility of reusing existing dependability models and solvers. Complexity and heterogeneity are managed through modularity, and composition allows for representing structural or functional dependencies. An example model based on a railway infrastructure is used to illustrate the concepts introduced by the paper. Copyright © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
