  • An event-driven manufacturing information system architecture for Industry 4.0

    • Future manufacturing systems need to be more flexible, to embrace tougher and constantly changing market demands. They need to make better use of plant data, ideally utilising all data from the entire plant. Low-level data should be refined to real-time information for decision-making, to facilitate competitiveness through informed and timely decisions. The Line Information System Architecture (LISA), is presented in this paper. It is an event-driven architecture featuring loose coupling, a prototype-oriented information model and formalised transformation services. LISA is designed to enable flexible factory integration and data utilisation. The focus of LISA is on integration of devices and services on all levels, simplifying hardware changes and integration of new smart services as well as supporting continuous improvements on information visualisation and control. The architecture has been evaluated on both real industrial data and industrial demonstrators and it is also being installed at a large automotive company. This article is an extended and revised version of the paper presented at the 2015 IFAC Symposium on Information Control in Manufacturing (INCOM 2015). The paper has been restructured in regards to the order and title of the chapters, and additional information about the integration between devices and services aspects have been added. The introduction and the general structure of the paper now better highlight the contributions of the paper and the uniqueness of the framework.

  • Building Stronger Bridges: Strategies for Improving Communication and Collaboration Between Industry and Academia in Software Engineering

    • Background: The software engineering community has expressed growing concern regarding the need for more connections between research and practice. Despite the large amount of knowledge researchers generate, its impact on real-world practice is uncertain. Meanwhile, practitioners in industry often struggle to access and utilize relevant research outcomes that could inform and enhance their work. Collaboration between industry and academia is seen as a potential solution to bridge this gap, ensuring that research remains relevant and applicable in real-world contexts.Objective: This research aims to explore challenges in communication and collaboration between industry and to design, evaluate, and implement strategies that foster this collaboration. Methodology: The design science paradigm inspires this research, as we aim to obtain knowledge about industry-academia communication and collaboration by studying challenges and solutions in context. The thesis includes case studies; some are exploratory, while others focus on evaluating specific strategies.Results: In terms of problem understanding, we identified challenges that impact communication and collaboration, such as different expectations, perspectives, and ways of working. Furthermore, we pinpointed factors facilitating communication, including long-term projects, research relevance, and practitioners' involvement.Regarding how to improve communication and collaboration, we investigated two strategies. The first strategy involves using the SERP-taxonomy approach in a project on software vulnerability management in IoT systems. The second strategy involves the proposal of interactive rapid reviews, conducted in close collaboration with practitioners. We share the lessons from conducting two reviews (one in testing machine learning systems and the other in software component selection). The benefits of conducting interactive rapid reviews include mutual understanding, the development of networks, and increased motivation for further studies.Conclusion: The thesis emphasizes the importance of industry-academia collaboration as a key aspect in closing gaps between research and practice. The strategies discussed provide tools to understand industry-academia partnerships better and support future collaborations.

  • Attack Resilient Cloud-Based Control Systems for Industry 4.0

    • In recent years, since the cloud can provide tremendous advantages regarding storage and computing resources, the industry has been motivated to move industrial control systems to the cloud. However, the cloud also introduces significant security challenges since moving control systems to the cloud can enable attackers to infiltrate the system and establish an attack that can lead to damages and disruptions with potentially catastrophic consequences. Therefore, some security measures are necessary to detect these attacks in a timely manner and mitigate their impact. In this paper, we propose a security framework for cloud control systems that makes them resilient against attacks. This framework includes three steps: attack detection, attack isolation, and attack mitigation. We validate our proposed framework on a real testbed and evaluate its capability by subjecting it to a set of attacks. We show that our proposed solution can detect an attack in a timely manner and keep the plant stable, with high performance during the attack.

    • Resource management is an essential building block of any modern computer and communication network. In this thesis, the results of our research in the following two tracks are summarized in four papers. The first track includes three papers and covers modeling, prediction and control for multi-tier computing systems. In the first paper, a NARX-based multi-step-ahead response time predictor for single server queuing systems is presented which can be applied to CPU-constrained computing systems. The second paper introduces a NARX-based multi-step-ahead query response time predictor for database servers. Both mentioned predictors can predict the dynamics of response times in the whole operation range particularly in high load scenarios without changes having to be applied to the current protocols and operating systems. In the third paper, queuing theory is used to model the dynamics of a database server. Several heuristics are presented to tune the parameters of the proposed model to the measured data from the database. Furthermore, an admission controller is presented, and its parameters are tuned to control the response time of queries which are sent to the database to stay below a predefined reference value.The second track includes one paper, covering a problem formulation and optimal solution for a content replication problem in Telecom operator's content delivery networks (Telco-CDNs). The problem is formulated in the form of an integer programming problem trying to minimize the communication delay and cost according to several constraints such as limited content replication budget, limited storage size and limited downlink bandwidth of each regional content server. The solution of this problem is a performance bound for any distributed content replication algorithm which addresses the same problem.

    • The fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications introduces improvements on many fronts when compared to its previous generations. Besides the performance enhancements and new advances in radio technologies, it also integrates other technological domains, such as cloud-to-things continuum and artificial intelligence. In this work, the 5G-DIVE Elastic Edge Platform (DEEP) is proposed as the linking piece for the integration of these technological domains, making available an intelligent edge and fog 5G end-to-end solution. This solution brings numerous benefits to vertical industries by enabling streamlined, abstracted, and automated management of their vertical services, thus contributing to the introduction of novel services, cost savings, and improved time to market. Preliminary validation of the proposed platform is performed through a proof of concept, along with a qualitative analysis of its benefits for Industry 4.0 and autonomous drone scouting vertical industries.

    • OpenFlow flow tables in Open vSwitch contain valuable information about installed flows, priorities, packet actions and routing policies. Their importance is emphasized when collocated tenants compete for the limited entries available to install flow rules. From a security point of view, OpenFlow flow tables are a valuable asset that requires both confidentiality and integrity guarantees. However, commodity software switch implementations - such as Open vSwitch - do not implement protection mechanisms capable to prevent attackers from either obtaining information about the installed flows or modifying the contents of flow tables. In this work, we adopt a radical approach to enabling OpenFlow flow table protection through decomposition. Based on a careful analysis of the architecture and implementation of Open vSwitch, we identify core assets requiring security guarantees, design an approach to isolating OpenFlow flow tables, and implement a prototype using Open vSwitch and Software Guard Extensions enclaves.

    • With the emergence of industrial IoT and cloud computing, and the advent of 5G and edge clouds, there are ambitious expectations on elasticity, economies of scale, and fast time to market for demanding use cases in the next generation of ICT networks. Responsiveness and reliability of wireless communication links and services in the cloud are set to improve significantly as the concept of edge clouds is becoming more prevalent. To enable industrial uptake we must provide cloud capacity in the networks but also a sufficient level of simplicity and self-sustainability in the software platforms. In this paper, we present a research test-bed built to study mission-critical control over the distributed edge cloud. We evaluate system properties using a conventional control application in the form of a Model Predictive Controller. Our cloud platform provides the means to continuously operate our mission-critical application while seamlessly relocating computations across geographically dispersed compute nodes. Through our use of 5G wireless radio, we allow for mobility and reliably provide compute resources with low latency, at the edge. The primary contribution of this paper is a state-of-the art, fully operational test-bed showing the potential for merged IoT, 5G, and cloud. We also provide an evaluation of the system while operating a mission-critical application and provide an outlook on a novel research direction.
