  • Innovation-related Activities in a Low-tech Industry : A Study of the Electroplating and Surface Treatment Industry in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Research on Technology, Innovation and Marketing Management 2009‐2011. - Halmstad : Högskolan i Halmstad. - 9789197507516 ; , s. 55-81
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Given the complex and interdependent nature of innovation, it is a diverse phenomenon which takes place both in high‐ and low‐tech industries. The purpose of this paper is to increase our understanding about low‐tech industries’ innovation‐related activities and the specific capabilities of the companies that influence those. To achieve this purpose this study has performed an empirical analysis of the Swedish context of the Swedish Electroplating and Surface Treatment Industry (ESTI) and the characteristics of the companies operating in it. It investigated how the companies perceived their expertise and innovative activities in comparison with their main competitors. The main types of innovation the ESTI companieshad undertaken in a three‐year period (2004–2006) were studied. The research and development (R&D) and personnel qualification improvement expenditures were explored. The study looked into collaboration and the factors which companies perceived as important in order to collaborate. Our empirical evidence shows that innovation in the ESTI is shaped notby R&D but by other determinants, such as specific and rare capabilities in, for example, processing technologies, logistics, ability to spot, evaluate and exploit external knowledge as well as their ability to establish and sustain intercompany relationships. Strong relationships and integration with customers and suppliers emerge as pivotal for the innovation‐related activities in the ESTI. Additionally, close collaboration, facilitated by a strong intermediate institution, such as the Swedish Association of Surface Treatment Companies (Svensk YtbehandlingsFörening – SYF, also shape the innovation‐related activities in the ESTI.

  • (Eco)toxicological impact potential from inorganic substances in biosolids : Real data-based suggestions for regulatory improvements
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Nanotechnology, Monitoring & Management. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 2215-1532. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sewage sludge (SS) can be applied in soil for its nutrient recycling in agriculture and forestry, but the presence of toxic substances may prompt environmental and human health risks. Brazilian Resolution (CONAMA 498/2020) establishes thresholds for biosolid (i.e., treated sludge) quality for application in soils. We have evaluated the (eco)toxicological impact potential of such practice regarding the mentioned thresholds, and the concentration of inorganic substances in sludge from three different Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) in São Paulo, Brazil. The assessment relied on USEtox®, a model that estimates the potential toxicological impact on humans and ecosystems. According to the evaluation of the regulatory thresholds, Zn are responsible for an ecotoxicological impact potential of 2.33E + 02 PAF.m3.day/kg (potentially affected species), which represents 48.2% of the aggregated impact for the scenario, while Hg potential is of 1.25E-04 cases/kg for non-cancerous diseases in humans – corresponding to 54% of this scenario. The assessment of the SS samples has confirmed to be critical for Zn, Hg, and Cr, and indicated potential ecotoxicological risks for concentrations found of Fe and Al, which do not have regulatory thresholds. Results were discussed along with related literature and international regulation. The study supports sustainable management of sewage in Brazil, and the analytical framework is replicable in other regions. © 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • The use of processes and methods in NPD : A survey of Swedish industry
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management (IJITM). - Singapore : World Scientific Publishing Company. - 0219-8770. ; 1:1, s. 37-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research often suggests that formal New Product Development (NPD) processes increase the success rate of NPD projects in a firm. However, recent studies indicate a relatively low usage of formal NPD-processes. Very few studies of NPD practices have been carried out in contexts other than that of the US, thus it is of interest to explore whether or not important differences exist. The present study aims to identify the use of and practices within formal NPD-processes in Swedish manufacturing firms and to compare the results with a study conducted in a US context. The results indicate that differences exist in for example reward systems for NPD teams.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 43rd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Los Alamitos : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769538693 - 076953869X ; , s. 1607-1616
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses user contribution in innovation processes from a Living Lab perspective. In this paper we focus on methods and techniques for user contribution in innovation processes by discussing our own experiences based on 100 activities conducted within four different research projects over a period of five years. The purpose of this paper is to discuss our experiences of methods and techniques for user contribution in innovation processes, in relation Living Labs, as well as to: a) phase in the innovation process, b) kind of user contribution and c) type of users. Our contribution is threefold, we have: (1) theoretically modified the CIC model to better suit a Living Lab milieu, (2) empirically discussed methods and techniques for user contribution in relation to the modified model, and (3) identified several issues regarding different kinds of user contribution and types of users that need to be considered in Living Labs. © 2010 IEEE.

  • Image analysis and artificial neural network for colour classification in multicolour newspaper printing
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: 1994 International Printing and Graphic Arts Conference. - Atlanta : TAPPI Press. - 1895288665 ; , s. 89-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automatic inspection of printed multicoloured screen pictures demands methods for colour classification of screen dots and pans of screen dots directly in an arbitrary picture. The paper describes a technique using colour image analysis and artificial neural network for inverse colour separation. For every arbitrary small part of a coloured picture it is determined which coloured inks that have been printed in that part. Special attention is paid to the problem of seperating between black colour produced by black ink and black colour produced by combining cyan, magenta and yellow ink. The technique is tested on multicoloured newsprint and a high correct colour classification rate has been demonstrated.

  • Stimuli responsive polymers as adjuvants and carriers for antigen delivery
  • 2013. - 1
  • Ingår i: Responsive Materials and Methods. - Hoboken, NJ, USA : Wiley-Scrivener Publishing LLC. - 9781118686225 - 9781118842843 ; , s. 123-139
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stimuli responsive polymers are gaining importance in immunology not only as carriers for delivering antigens to target tissues but also as immunologically inert adjuvants. Delivery of antigens in the presence or absence of a specific stimulus like pH, temperature, ionic strength offers wide range of application possibilities to these smart polymers including vaccine formulations, implantation studies, targeted therapies and induction of autoimmunity. Other properties of polymers such as biocompatibility, biodegradability with different kinetics, non-toxicity, easy and defined chemical synthesis and, the ability to incorporate different types of antigens/immuno-stimulators make them promising candidates over other conventional materials for biomedical applications. Activation or suppression of antigen-specific immune responses and protection of antigens from in vivo degradation are some of the other advantages with these polymers. Changes in physical conformation of the polymers due to an environment stimulus provide an optimal release of an antigen. Varying the ratio of monomers and cross linkers in their synthesis controlled the release of antigens and degradation of polymers. In particulate form (as nano-sized) polymers can efficiently encapsulate desired amount of antigens, which can easily cross across several biological barriers. However, adjuvant and carrier properties of these smart polymers depend not only on their intrinsic properties such as chain length, molecular weight, charge and a balance between hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional moieties but also on extrinsic properties like format, shape and distribution of polymeric chains. In conclusion, further characterization of smart polymers could facilitate their direct application in humans.

  • In-Situ Monitoring of Oxygen Concentration and Gas Temperature in a Metallurgical Process Using Diode-Laser Spectroscopy :
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Increased demands on quality control, reduced production-time, energy savings and reduction of green-house-gas emission in various metallurgical processes have created an interest for new methods to monitor and control the processes. By using Tunable Diode Laser spectrometers the gas temperature as well as the concentration of 0 2, CO and C02 have been monitored. Laboratory experiments were carried out in a specially designed high-temperature furnace at MEFOS to determine a set of absorption lines suitable for simultaneous 02ffemperature and CO/COz measurements. Field trials were carried out in an Electric Arc Furnace and a reheating furnace.

  • In-Situ Monitoring of Oxygen Concentration and Gas Temperature in a Metallurgical Process Using Diode-Laser Spectroscopy
  • 2000
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • By using a Tunable Diode Laser spectrometer the oxygen concentration and the temperature in the off-gases of an electric arc furnace, EAF, have simultaneously been monitored during operation. The spectrometer operates at a group of absorptoin lines lines in the near infrared wavelength region to measure the oxygen concentration and the temperature. The O2 absotion line parameters used were determined in a controlled pilot experiment using a heated measurement path. The temperature is measured using the relative intensity of the absoption lines and thereafter concentration is calculated from the temperature compensated absorption. The measurements were performed in-situ with a specially designed high temperature sensor mounted on the furnace wall. Optical fibers were used to carry the probing light between the TDL spectrometer and the measurement point. This novel work shows the potential of using TDL spectrometer to measure O2 and temperature in-situ in a steel making process.

  • Combustion Control Using An IR Diode Laser
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is a recent development in process instrumentation. A commercial TDLAS instrument has been tested both in an industrial steel reheating furnace and in a pilot furnace at MEFOS for continuous oxygen analysis of the furnace combustion gases. Automatic control of the air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) was proven using a time-averaged oxygen concentration signal with a TDC2000 furnace controller at MEFOS. The oxygen concentrations measured by the TDLAS instrument compared well with local measurements of the oxygen concentration using a conventional zirconia probe in both furnaces. The diode laser has the advantages of high reliability for average gas concentration measurements in the path of the beam, when compared to point gas analysis with conventional zirconia instrumentation. Reliable gas analysis offers the benefits of improved process control, which for steel reheating furnaces include energy savings, reduced emissions and improved productivity.
