    • The physical and electrochemical properties of ternary oxides Ti0.7Ru0.3-xCoxO2 (x = 0.093 and x = 0) have been investigated and compared. Samples of three different thicknesses were prepared by spin-coating onto polished titanium to achieve uniform and well-defined coatings. The resulting electrodes were characterized with a variety of methods, including both physical and electrochemical methods. Doping with cobalt led to a larger number of micrometer-sized cracks in the coating, and coating grains half the size compared to the undoped samples (10 instead of 20 nm across). This is in agreement with a voltammetric charge twice as high, as estimated from cyclic voltammetry. There is no evidence of a Co3O4 spinel phase, suggesting that the cobalt is mainly incorporated in the overall rutile structure of the (Ti,Ru)O-2. The doped electrodes exhibited a higher activity for cathodic hydrogen evolution compared to the undoped electrodes, despite the fact that one third of the active ruthenium was substituted with cobalt.     • The phase behavior of carboxylic acid/alkylamine mixtures in water is largely dictated by a proton transfer from the acid to the amine, which will lead to charged species. If the distribution of carbon atoms is unequal between the acid and the amine, the result will be an ionic surfactant with an organic counterion. In this work the phase diagram for the ternary system acetic acid-dodecylamine-water at 298.2 K has been determined. Dodecylamine forms a lamellar phase with water, but when,acetic acid is added up to an equimolecular ratio between acid and amine, three new phases appear. These phases are an isotropic solution phase, a hexagonal liquid crystalline phase, and a cubic liquid crystalline phase. These three phases are not able to incorporate any excess amine. The solution phase shows the existence of micelles, which are spherical at high dilution, but show an elongation close to the phase border to the hexagonal phase.

    • The phase behavior of alkanoic acid-alkylamine mixtures in water is mainly dictated by a proton transfer from the acid to the amine. For an asymmetric distribution of carbon atoms in the alkyl chains, the result will be an ionic surfactant with an organic counter-ion. In this study the phase diagram at 298.2 K for the ternary system decanoic acid-butylamine-water has been determined. The phase diagram is dominated by a large isotropic solution region. The selfdiffusion, viscosity, and conductivity measurements in the solution phase for an equimolecular ratio between the acid and the amine indicate a continuous transition from aqueous spherical mixed micelles to highly interacting hydrated acid-amine complexes passing through a bicontinuous region. One liquid crystalline lamellar phase, existing at excess acid, has been found. The small angle Xray scattering results indicate that the amine, due to its slightly amphiphilic character, is distributed between water and the bilayer.

    • A new device for coating a single levitated particle in a controllable environment is designed and tested. This enables fluidized bed processing to be simulated experimentally on a single-particle level. The device consists of a coating chamber, which contains a capillary tube for levitating the particle, a micro-dispenser for producing discrete drops of controlled size and velocity and a device for supplying gas with specified temperature and humidity. The coating chamber consists of two parts, a confined space where the particle is levitated and a droplet insertion cone where the coating solution is injected into the particle suspending gas flow. A capillary with a well-defined diameter connects the droplet insertion cone and the area where the particle is levitated. The device is equipped with a piezo-actuated flow-through micro-dispenser that has the ability to produce discrete droplets with high reproducibility in terms of droplet size and velocity. The gas required for the coating process is taken from a gas container where the water content is analysed and kept at a minimum. A liquid flow is then introduced into the gas flow at a well-defined flow rate, mixed and evaporated in a three-way mixing vault. The humidified gas flow is then split into two separate flows; a suspending gas flow and a protecting gas flow for the inside of the coating chamber. The device is equipped with a high-speed video camera for monitoring both droplet production and droplet impact. Temperatures and flow rates throughout the device are measured and logged. Preliminary results show the influence of solvent, gas quality and coating procedure on the quality of the coating.
