  • Supplier selection or collaboration? : Determining factors of performance improvement when outsourcing manufacturing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 15:3, s. 143-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An empirical study was designed to determine factors of performance improvement when outsourcing manufacturing. Findings from a survey of 136 manufacturing plants in Sweden show that most of them achieve their outsourcing motives, but not without trade-offs. Factors of performance improvements such as economies of scale or operations in low-cost countries can improve one performance dimension, such as product cost, yet negatively impact volume flexibility, speed or product innovation. The results show part characteristics and supplier operating capabilities are more important than supplier relationship strategies when outsourcing manufacturing, meaning that supplier selection trumps supplier collaboration in the make-or-buy decision.

  • Nominated procurement and the indirect control of nominated sub-suppliers: Evidence from the Sri Lankan apparel supply chain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 127, s. 179-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and discusses nominated procurement as a means through which buyers select sub-suppliers to achieve sustainability compliance upstream in emerging economies' supply chains. Hence, it critically examines the ways buyers articulate nominated procurement and the unfolding supply chain consequences. Based on in-depth interviews and fieldwork in the Sri Lankan apparel supply chain, the findings indicate that buyers accomplish sustainability compliance among their sub-suppliers while prioritizing their own business agenda. In doing so, however, buyers perpetuate “suboptimal compliance” of raw material suppliers and “sandwiching” of direct suppliers as harmful consequences on the supply chain. These consequences link theoretically with commercial, geographical, compliance and extended-compliance pressure. This article contributes to the advancement of the Sustainable Supply Chain Management literature by theorizing about nominated procurement, direct and indirect pressure, and pointing to the supply chain consequences beyond achievements in sustainability compliance.

  • Towards Circular Manufacturing Systems implementation : A Complex Adaptive Systems perspective using modelling and simulation as a quantitative analysis tool
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production and Consumption. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-5509. ; 31, s. 97-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A transition towards circular manufacturing systems (CMS) has brought awareness of untapped economic and environmental benefits for the manufacturing industry. Conventional manufacturing systems already present a high level of complexity in terms of physical flows of materials and products as well as information and financial flows linked to them. Closing the loop of materials and products through multiple lifecycles, as proposed in CMS, increases this complexity manifold. To support practitioners in implementing CMS through enhanced decision-making, this research studies CMS from a complex adaptive systems (CAS) perspective and proposes to exploit methods and tools used in the study of CAS to characterise, model and analyse CMS. By viewing CMS as CAS composed of autonomous, interacting agents, this research proposes a multi-method model architecture for modelling and simulating CMS. The different CMS stakeholders are modelled individually as autonomous agents by integrating agent-based, discrete-event, and/or system dynamics modules within each agent to capture their diverse and heterogeneous nature. The applicability of the proposed multi-method approach is illustrated through a case study of a white goods manufacturing company implementing CMS in practice. This case study shows the relevance and feasibility of the proposed multi-method approach as a decision support tool for the systemic exploration and quantification of CMS. It also shows how a transition towards CMS necessitates a lifecycle approach in terms of costs, revenues and environmental impacts to identify hotspots and, therefore, design circular systems that are viable in both economic and environmental terms. In fact, the analyses of the simulation results indicate how decisions in terms of business models, product design, and supply chain affected the CMS performance of the case company. For instance, implementing a service-based model led to a high number of usecycles (on average six usecycles per washing machine), which, in turn, led to high lifecycle costs and emissions due to more frequent transportation and recovery operations. Similarly, the deployment of long-lasting washing machines, which is a core principle of CMS, led to high manufacturing costs. Due to the high initial costs and a time mismatch between revenues and costs in the service-based model, it required a longer time for the company to reach the break-even point (approximately 23 months). Overall, the case study shows that multi-method simulation modelling can provide decision-making support for a successful implementation of CMS.

  • Orchestrating digital innovation: The case of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 48, s. 248-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing interest in how digital innovation is facilitated and enacted in networks of diverse actors, i.e. heterogenous networks. However, while there is considerable evidence that firms can build key capabilities through engagement with external partners, we find a dearth of studies on how digital innovation is orchestrated in situations where an academic unit plays a facilitating role in the heterogenous network. We address this question employing a dynamic capabilities approach, and focusing on experiences from a national academic initiative, the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation (SCDI). SCDI was formed in 2013 and has adopted an engaged scholarship approach and a combination of activities designed to increase digital capabilities among partner organizations. We argue that the acquisition of new knowledge through external and internal sources stimulates firms and public sector organizations engaged in digital innovation to integrate such new knowledge with existing knowledge. Specifically, we demonstrate how SCDI’s core activities create increased integrative capabilities for the involved stakeholders, as well as offer lessons-learned and recommendations for academic units that wish to orchestrate digital innovation.

  • Accounting and distributed product development
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IMP Journal. - : Emerald. - 0809-7259. ; 3:1, s. 2-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the nature of product development and the impact of accounting practices on such developments. Through an in-depth case study at ABB Robotics we extend Dubois and Araujo's (2006) work on distributed product development. We find that distributed product development encompasses a mix of hierarchical and collective systems integration, planning and improvising. We thereby contribute to the emerging literature on distributed product development by highlighting the combinations of the hierarchical view (c.f. Brusoni et al, 2001) and the interactive view (c.f. Dubois and Araujo, 2006)We also show how a financial logic, captured through target costing, influences  many of the pragmatic decisions concerning technical and organisational interfaces in distributed product development processes. We therefore argue that the literature on distributed product development could be extended by making the financial logic explicit and treating it on the same level as the technical logic and the organizational logic inherent in the development processes. Distributed product development is about reaching viable compromises between technical, organisational and financial features. Target costing was also found to have different roles in distributed product development. During hierarchical systems integration, target costing functioned as a hierarchical planning and evaluation technique. During collective systems integration, target costing was used to give focus to joint problem-solving, to aid knowledge integration, as well as to guide the creation of consensus around prioritisations.
