  • Perceived Quality Attributes Importance Ranking Methodology in the Automotive Industry: A Case Study on Geometry Appearance Attributes at CEVT
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 107, s. 1559-1564
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implementation of methods for perceived quality evaluation is an integral part of the automotive manufacturers' strategic development plans. The correct definition of perceived quality requirements is one of the significant factors influencing customer's purchase intention. This study seeks to understand how customers perceive and prioritize attributes that are associated with the geometrical and materials quality of a premium car market segment. We applied the Perceived Quality Attributes Importance Ranking (PQAIR) methodology to understand the importance of different perceived quality attributes form a customer perspective. Such an understanding can contribute to the effectiveness of the design processes in the early product development phases. This approach is tested on 144 respondents representing customer's target group and performed in collaboration with China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT) technical experts. Our results verify the rationality and feasibility of the applied method and indicate the improvement of engineering practices regarding complex product development.

  • Simulation-Based Product Development Framework for Cutting Tool Geometry Design
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Conference Proceedings. - : Stellenbosch University. - 9780797217799 ; , s. 47-52
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cutting tool geometry design has traditionally relied on experimental studies; while engineering simulations, to the level of industrial deployment, have been developed only in the last couple of decades. With the development of simulation capability across length scales from micro to macro, cutting tool geometry development includes engineering data development for its efficient utilization. This calls for the design of a simulation-based approach in the design of cutting tool geometry so that the engineering data can be generated for different machining applications (e.g.digital twin). In this study, the needs for engineering model development of different stages of cutting tool design evaluation is assessed. To this end, some of the previously developed engineering models have been evaluated for evaluation of chip form morphology in industrially relevant nose turning process, work piece material behavior modeling and damage modeling for the prediction of chip shape morphology. The study shows the possibility for the developed models to act as building blocks of a digital twin. It also shows the need for engineering model development for different aspects of cutting tool design, its advantages, limitations, and prospects.

  • Exploring service quality in the health and fitness industry
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Managing Service Quality. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-4529 .- 1758-8030. ; 17:1, s. 41-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to discover quality dimensions for the health‐and‐fitness industry and to examine the salient aspects of the quality‐management practices of organisations in this industry.Design/methodology/approach – The research in this paper uses a grounded‐theory approach to a multiple case study of 15 companies in the Swedish health‐and‐fitness industry. Qualitative methods in the form of in‐depth interviews and observation are utilised for data collection.Findings – The paper finds that a framework for fitness quality management is developed and presented. The quality dimensions are found to be “pleasure”, “mental change”, and “physical change”. The main enablers are defined as “relational competence” and “technical competence”. Other indirect enablers are also identified and described.Research limitations/implications – The paper shows that because the framework is based on qualitative data collection, the relationships are not quantified. This could be an objective of further research.Practical implications – The framework presented in this paper is useful for managers of fitness companies when designing and managing their activities.Originality/value – The paper presents a novel framework of the salient features of quality in fitness services – an industry that has received little scholarly attention in the past. This research also contributes to the general understanding of service quality, and demonstrates the usefulness of inductive qualitative methodology in this regard.

  • Measurement method for the identification of individual teeth in milling operations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: CIRP - Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1755-5817 .- 1878-0016. ; 5:1, s. 26-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internal sensors already available in the machine tools may prove to be an interesting approach to monitor the machining process. Accurate determination of the position of the individual tooth on a milling cutter is important to be able to correlate the measured responses from the machine tool position encoders to the tooth or teeth that may be the cause of the response. The aim of the work presented in this paper is to develop a measurement method to identify the individual tooth on a milling cutter by their angular position relative to a specified 0-degree direction. If the lower and upper bounds of the cutting zone are known, together with the actual spindle position and the starting time of the cut, it will be possible to track and identify which teeth are within the cutting zone at a given time in the following off-line analysis of the responses. This may simplify the task of finding potential correlations between the state of individual teeth on the milling cutter with measured responses from various sensors during the milling process. The proposed method is based on a reflectance detector and uses accurate position information provided by the position encoders.A validation of the measurement method is also presented which shows that the error of the estimated angular position is approximately +/- 0.15 degrees for the validation setup used in this case.

  • Optimum maintenance using knowledge from a complete product population
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21st International congress on maintenance and asset management. - Belgrad. ; , s. 851-857
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Company’s today aim towards increased performance and effectiveness in order to stay competitive. Being a part of such development programs, the maintenance function tries to be more precise in their doings and more cost-efficient in order to increase their value contribution. However, as a company only is one of many customers to the various suppliers of systems, machines and equipment being used, the maintenance function will remain a sub optimized small part of the various  product populations. The lack of information and knowledge from the complete product populations hampers development and makes all efforts to optimize maintenance in individual company organizations more or less meaningless. The key to improvement is the ongoing experience and the knowledge developed from use of a whole product population. This paper describes how maintenance functions must develop using the knowledge acquired from an as complete product population as possible. The development achievable is described and exemplified and key actors are defined together with estimates of the economic potential that could be realized.

  • Experimental validation of an inductive probe for narrow gap measurement based on numerical modelling
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Measurement. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2241 .- 1873-412X. ; 146, s. 396-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimental validation of numeric results for an inductive probe shows that narrow gaps between two plates can be measured with accuracy suitable for laser beam welding. A two-coil inductive probe for measurement of the gap was built based on finite element modelling results. The individual coils were calibrated using a complex response method, and results from the physical coils closely match the numerical results regarding distance to gap and lift-off above the plate. The measurement of a realistic gap shows results that can be used in industrial applications for position, plate height and height alignment.

  • Safety System for Industrial Robots to Support Collaboration
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Advances in Ergonomics of Manufacturing. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319416960 - 9783319416977 ; , s. 253-265
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ongoing trend towards manufacturing of customized products generates an increased demand on highly efficient work methods to manage product variants through flexible automation. Adopting robots for automation is not always feasible in low batch production. However, the combination of humans together with robots performing tasks in collaboration provides a complementary mix of skill and creativity of humans, and precision and strength of robots which support flexible production in small series down to one-off production. Through this, collaboration can be used with implications on reconfiguration and production. In this paper, the focus and study is on designing safety for efficient collaboration operator—robot in selected work task scenarios. The recently published ISO/TS 15066:2016 describing collaboration between operator and robot is in this context an important document for development and implementation of robotic systems designed for collaboration between operator and robot.

  • Condition Monitoring in Machining Using Internal Sensor Signals
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Condition monitoring of critical machine tool components and machining processes is a key factor to increase the availability of the machine tool and to achieve a more robust machining process. Any failure in the machining process and machine tool components may have negative effects on the final produced part. Instabilities in machining processes also shortens the life time of the cutting edges and the machine tool. The condition monitoring system may utilise information from several sources to facilitate the detection of disturbances in the machining process. To minimise additional complexity to the machining system, internal sensor signals for condition monitoring are used. The main contribution from this work is a further understanding of the measured responses from linear and angular position encoders during excitation of the machine tool structure. It is shown that the measured encoder responses contain the operational frequencies and this applies to both active and passive machine axes. The response from an active machine axis however, involves a more complex analysis. The fundamental principles on the extraction of the generated micro-vibrations (translational and torsional vibrations) from the linear and rotary encoders are presented. Various methods for their analysis in time domain, frequency domain and phase space domain are also presented. New extentions to the nonlinear numerical methods in order to facilitate the extraction of features from Poincaré sections are introduced. The experimental work shows that encoders are sensitive to small disturbances in the machining process. The possibility to use the proposed measurement method and numerical methods for tool wear detection in a milling operation has therefore been investigated. It is shown that tool wear can be detected and quantified by utilising the signals already available in machine tools.

  • Automatic in-line inspection of shape based on photogrammetry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The 7th International Swedish Production Symposium, SPS16, Conference Proceedings. - Lund : Swedish Production Academy. ; , s. 1-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are describing a fully automatic in-line shape inspection system for controlling the shape of moving objects on a conveyor belt. The shapes of the objects are measured using a full-field optical shape measurement method based on photogrammetry. The photogrammetry system consists of four cameras, a flash, and a triggering device. When an object to be measured arrives at a given position relative to the system, the flash and cameras are synchronously triggered to capture images of the moving object. From the captured images a point-cloud representing the measured shape is created. The point-cloud is then aligned to a CAD-model, which defines the nominal shape of the measured object, using a best-fit method and a feature-based alignment method. Deviations between the point-cloud and the CAD-model are computed giving the output of the inspection process. The computational time to create a point-cloud from the captured images is about 30 seconds and the computational time for the comparison with the CAD-model is about ten milliseconds. We report on recent progress with the shape inspection system.
