  • Review of Current Status and Future Directions for Collaborative and Semi-Automated Automotive Wire Harnesses Assembly
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier. - 2212-8271. ; 120, s. 696-701
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wire harnesses are vital for any modern automotive vehicle. They control the basic functions in a vehicle, for example, windshield wipers and critical functions such as sensors, cameras, and autopilot functions. Thus, the quality of wire harness assembly is highly important. Today, wire harnesses are usually assembled manually, which creates unergonomic and tedious working conditions for operators. Traditional and collaborative industrial robots have been identified as possible solutions to overcome challenges faced by operators in this type of assembly. The international research community has proposed many solutions for automating the assembly of wire harnesses in automotive vehicles but despite these solutions, the industry has not been able to adopt a method to automate this assembly process fully or partially. This paper presents a review of findings on robot-assisted wire harness assembly processes based on a systematic literature review. Specifically, the assembly of wire harnesses in Electric Vehicles (EVs). The state-of-the-art review focuses on solutions to improve unergonomic work situations and ensure the quality of assembly operations. Best practices and reasons for the lack of extensive implementation in automotive final assembly systems are described. Further, the paper presents suggestions based on success stories where the automation of the wire harness assembly in automotive vehicles has been realised by leveraging human-centred automation solutions. Based on the findings, this paper identifies the research for future study. The findings also indicate that there is already technology that can support the automation of wire harness assembly processes in EVs but it is crucial to identify the human aspects and the role of humans in the assembly of wire harness assembly process.

  • Factory-in-a-Box - Solutions for Availability and Mobility of Flexible Production Capacity
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Swedish Production Symposium,2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to present examples of how to realize a flexible and reconfigurable production system. An ongoing research project in Sweden called Factory-in-a-Box will be presented which is one research initiative within this area. The purpose of the Factory-in-a-Box project is to develop solutions for mobile production capacity on demand. Three key features have been identified as enablers for these kinds of production capabilities: mobility, flexibility, and speed. The concept consists of standardized modules that can be installed in e.g. containers and easily transported by trucks, rail vehicles, and boats. The modules can easily be combined into complete production systems and reconfigured for new products and/or scaled to handle new volumes. The goal of the Factory-in-a-Box project is to build fully operative production modules that are developed in close cooperation between different academic and industrial partners. This paper will present the results from these demonstrators giving examples of the usability of the Factory-in-a-Box concept in industry.

  • Smart Maintenance: Instrument Development, Content Validation and an Empirical Pilot
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 40:4, s. 481-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Scholars and practitioners within industrial maintenance management are focused on understanding antecedents, correlates and consequences of the concept of “Smart Maintenance”, which consists of the four dimensions data-driven decision-making, human capital resource, internal integration and external integration. In order to facilitate this understanding, valid and reliable empirical measures need to be developed. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a psychometric instrument that measures the four dimensions of Smart Maintenance. Design/methodology/approach: The results from two sequential empirical studies are presented, which include generating items to represent the constructs, assessment of content validity, as well as an empirical pilot test. With input from 50 industrial experts, a pool of 80 items that represent the constructs are generated. Thereafter, using data from 42 industrial and academic raters, the content validity of all items is assessed quantitatively. Finally, using data from 59 manufacturing plants, the dimensionality and factor structure of the instrument are tested. Findings: We demonstrate content validity and provide evidence of good model fit and psychometric properties for one-factor models with 8-11 items for each of the four constructs, as well as a combined 24-item four-factor model. Originality/value: We provide recommendations for scholarly use of the instrument in further theory-testing research, as well as its practical use to assess, benchmark and longitudinally evaluate Smart Maintenance within the manufacturing industry.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IFAC-PapersOnLine. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-8963. ; 53, s. 10615-10620
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is expected to deeply change several aspects of the manufacturing industry. Among them, the logistics and supply chain activities will be affected by these changes both at operational and managerial level to face the market drivers of flexibility and mass-customisation. In this context, the work of operators in internal and external logistics will be affected by these changes and increase the interaction between humans and machines. The evolution of the roles of humans in Logistics 4.0 will give birth to "The Logistics Operator 4.0"paradigm. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impacts of Industry 4.0 technologies on the different roles of logistics operators that work in the main logistics domains and areas.

  • Level of automation analysis in manufacturing systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Advances in Human Factors, Ergonomics, and Safety in Manufacturing and Service Industries. - 9781439835005 ; , s. 233-242
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Manufacturing tends to be polarizing in terms of automation. Final assembly and other mass-customization operations in the production flow show an increase in allocation of functions to the operators. In contrast, early manufacturing phases, where high repeatability is possible and needed, show an increase in automation with high autonomy, adaptability, and robustness towards disturbances, with operators in a more supervision role. Manufacturing automation may benefit from a differentiated view; manufacturing automation has a strong physical component, i.e. the traditional physical ergonomic and task allocation view of operator work. On the other hand, increasing presence of information technology, manufacturing execution systems, and various operator support information have resulted in a radical change for the operator situation in terms of cognitive ergonomics. This paper presents a methodology for analysis of semi-automated manufacturing systems, in terms of physical and cognitive levels of automation (LoA). The aim is to determine appropriate task allocation by generating a span of possible solutions for physical and cognitive automation levels. Results are based on ten industrial case studies from assembly operations in Swedish companies.

  • Information enabling production ramp-up
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management. - Bingley : Emerald. - 1741-038X .- 1758-7786. ; 20:2, s. 178-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper seeks to identify information enabling and supporting production ramp-up processes, by exploring critical events and the role of information in such events.Design/methodology/approach – The research approach was based on empirical and theoretical investigations. A selection of 30 events, considered the most critical for production ramp-up realization and/or performance at one Swedish automotive company, were categorized and constituted the base for the analysis which focused information types and sources enabling event handling.Findings – Information enabling event handling is a balanced combination of problem and domain information, regardless of event category. However, a differentiation concerning preference and usage of information types between experienced and less experienced personnel is identified. Problem-solving information has the character of pragmatic information, composed of complementary parts of confirmation and novelty in terms of domain and problem information. The preferred information source in all event categories was “other people”.Research limitations/implications – The study focuses on the application of information in relation to critical events during production ramp-up. General information theory is not addressed in depth.Practical implications – Information type and information source are not dependent on certain event categories, which allows a general information strategy enabling production ramp-up. To facilitate production ramp-up and event handling managers and key personnel need to apply a holistic perspective and need to be updated on domain information of the products, the equipment, and the production process during production ramp-up.Originality/value – The originality is in the focus and role of information to achieve an efficient production ramp-up performance. A supporting model is developed which describes the structure of pragmatic information for personnel with various levels of experience, regardless of event category.

  • The intersection of industrial resilience and sustainability in manufacturing supply chains
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 28th EurOMA Conference: Managing the “New Normal”: The Future of Operations and Supply Chain Management in Unprecedented Times. Sussex..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Subsequent to the Covid-19 pandemic and in the current context of overconsumption of resources, manufacturing organizations need to fundamentally rethink their efforts in order to align the objectives of a resilient and sustainable supply chain. The purpose of this study was to explore resilience and sustainability in manufacturing supply chains in order to conceptualize their intersection and understand prerequisites for the alignment of these two. Managing identified fragmenting mechanisms contributes to the further co-evolution of resilience and sustainability, which in turn will set the foundation to develop a maturity model that outlines capabilities for sustainable and resilient manufacturing supply chains.

  • Towards a Production Complexity Model that Supports Operation, Re-balancing and Man-hour Planning
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 4th Swedish Production Symposium (SPS): Lund, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mass customization and more variants, components, and frequent changes increase productioncomplexity. This paper presents research project aimed at developing a feasibledefinition of complexity, a method for measuring complexity, which supports line rebalancing,man-hour planning, and complexity management, competence, and informationsupport. The project is done in collaboration between Swerea IVF, Chalmers, Volvo Cars,Electrolux, Stoneridge, Electronics, and AB Volvo. Industrial studies were carried out tounderstand the needs for handling complexity. In parallel, a literature study was conductedover research on definitions, models and methods for complexity. In literature, complexityis commonly modelled by information and entropy of the system (randomness); and categorizedinto static/dynamic and subjective/objective. The research further concludes: unknownevents increase with complexity, making management of uncertainty increasinglyimportant, not only reducing but also coping with complexities; the role of humans andtechnology in work systems is crucial for coping with uncertainties; complexity models andmethods must be easy to understand and use; and must take a holistic view of production;and include different user’s perspective and the subjective complexity.
