    • Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, and apart from the Earth it is the only body in our solar system where a liquid exists on the surface. Within the last ten years a system of lakes and rivers have been discovered. The climate and seasonal cycles of Titan are still not very well known, but the composition and pressure are fairly well established. Perhaps in the future boats will sail the lakes of Titan for research purposes or even sport. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the concept of space sports, the conditions of Titan and to calculate important parameters of sailing such as floatability, stability, hull resistance and sail forces. This paper shows that if a sailing yacht on Titan will have twice as large displacement as on Earth, it will be 2.6 times less stable for the same beam. Since friction will be smaller, it will be faster than on Earth at low speed, but significantly slower at high speeds due to the wave generation. The same sail area is required to get the same sail forces if the average wind is 3 m/s, while a 9 times larger sail area is required for if the wind speed is only 1 m/s.

  • Comparative survival and growth performance of European lobster Homarus gammarus post-larva reared on novel feeds
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture Research. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1355-557X .- 1365-2109. ; 51:1, s. 102-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One approach to ongrow juvenile European lobster, Homarus gammarus, is to utilize land based rearing systems, incorporating automated feeding, individual culture and provision of stable pelleted feeds, preferably using sustainable ingredients. We initiated three feeding experiments to investigate the general suitability of ingredients produced from seafood by-products as novel feeds for H. gammarus, in terms of promoting survival, development and growth of post-larval lobsters from post-larvae (PL) stage IV to the first juvenile stage (stage V). The first experiment was designed to screen an array of candidate, locally produced, novel protein sources on growth performance parameters. This initial experiment revealed that PL reared on a raw (i.e. wet, unprocessed shrimp) feed used as a reference showed superior performance to those reared on experimental feeds containing fishmeal, herring protein isolate or mussel meal; however, a novel type of shrimp meal, produced by flocculation from waste water, promoted the best PL performance of any experimental feed. A second experiment was designed to test the effect of drying method and to optimize the form of a wet shrimp reference feed used by lobster hatcheries. This showed that the performance of PL reared on experimental freeze-dried shrimp feed was not significantly different to those reared on the wet, unprocessed shrimp used as a reference feed. However, lobsters offered experimental oven-dried shrimp feed (with or without an immune supplement) resulted in significantly lower survival or growth performance. A third and final experiment was designed in an attempt to improve a candidate herring-based protein source, by supplementing with nutrients found in shrimp. However, the results showed that PL reared on the wet reference shrimp feed still showed superior growth and survival than those reared on a herring feed alone, or supplemented with additives found in shrimp meal (either glucosamine, astaxanthin or both supplements combined). The high survival and growth, low incidence of moulting problems and high availability of waste shrimp material, suggest that non-heat-treated shrimp products are a promising feed ingredient for post-larval European lobsters.

  • A finite element based orientation averaging method for predicting elastic properties of short fiber reinforced composites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Composites Part B-Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-8368. ; 202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Short fiber reinforced composites have a variety of micro-structural parameters that affect their macromechanical performance. A modeling methodology, capable of accommodating a broad range of these parameters, is desirable. This paper describes a micro-mechanical model which is developed using Finite Element Analysis and Orientation Averaging. The model is applicable to short fiber reinforced composites with a wide variety of micro-structural parameters such as arbitrary fiber volume fractions, fiber aspect ratios and fiber orientation distributions. In addition to the Voigt and Reuss assumptions, an interaction model is developed based on the self-consistent assumption. Comparisons with experimental results, and direct numerical simulations of Representative Volume Elements show the capability of the model for fair predictions.

  • Geometry Assurance Integrating Process Variation with Simulation of Spring-In for Composite Parts and Assemblies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering. - : ASME International. - 1530-9827 .- 1944-7078. ; 16:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Copyright © 2016 by ASME.Geometrical variation and deviation in all the manufacturing processes affect the quality of the final product. Therefore, geometry assurance is an important tool in the design phase of a new product. In the automotive and aviation industries where the use of composite parts is increasing drastically, new tools within variation simulations are needed. Composite parts tend to deviate more from nominal specification compared to metal parts. Methods to simulate the manufacturing process of composites have been developed before. In this paper, we present how to combine the process variation simulation of composites with traditional variation simulations. The proposed method is demonstrated on a real complex subassembly, representing part of an aircraft wing-box. Since traditional variation simulation methods are not able to capture the spring-in and the special deviation behavior of composites, the proposed method adds a new feature and reliability to the geometry assurance process of composite assemblies.

  • A coarse-fine-mesh stabilization for an alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications. - : Wiley. - 1070-5325 .- 1099-1506. ; 26:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Domain decomposition methods can be solved in various ways. In this paper, domain decomposition in strips is used. It is demonstrated that a special version of the Schwarz alternating iteration method coupled with coarse-fine-mesh stabilization leads to a very efficient solver, which is easy to implement and has a behavior nearly independent of mesh and problem parameters. The novelty of the method is the use of alternating iterations between odd- and even-numbered subdomains and the replacement of the commonly used coarse-mesh stabilization method with coarse-fine-mesh stabilization.

  • EUROX (Europa Explorer): An astrobiology mission concept to the Jovian icy moon Europa.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Abstracts. ; 10, EGU2008-A-01483, 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The discovery of so-called extremophiles indicates how robust life is. That microbial life can resist extreme and harsh environmental conditions as e.g. very high and cold temperatures, desiccation, acidity, salinity and wide ranges of radiation spectra including UV and X-rays, suggests that micro organisms are capable of surviving and maintaining essential living functions, or often thriving, in conditions previously thought impossible. Recently it seems that only liquid water and an energy source are the core prerequisites for the development of life, greatly expanding the range of potential habitats for life both on Earth and in the solar system. In light of these discoveries, the definition of the “Habitable Zone” as the region where liquid water can exist at a planetary surface may need revision. Energy in the form of heat may be found on several volcanic worlds in our solar system, and subsurface liquid water may exist there, too. One likely candidate for such a reserve of water is the jovian icy moon Europa. Imaged by the Voyager and Galileo probes, this icy body appears to have a geologically young outer surface. Spectroscopic studies from Earth have confirmed that the European crust is composed of water ice. Long cracks across its surface may be suggestive of huge ice blocks rafting upon an underlying liquid layer. Darker non ice material also covers much of the surface and is spatially associated with the cracks. Recent modeling suggests that tidal forces imparted upon the moon by Jupiter may cause heating in the depth – raising the possibility of a liquid water ocean beneath Europa’s icy crust. Further on it is supposed that a weak induced magnetic field is present on the moon. This classifies Europa as an object of great scientific interest, warranting investigation for habitability and even the presence of life within the supposed ocean of the moon. The Europa Explorer (EUROX) mission complements other proposed missions to study Europa. EUROX will characterize the habitability potential of Europa, with the aim of understanding whether life could exist there or not. The mission will address the following key questions: (i) existence or non- existence of a liquid ocean beneath the surface, (ii) the nature of the non icy material visible upon the surface cracks, (iii) the physical characteristics of the ice crust, (iv) effects by local radiation on the surface chemistry, (v) the depth of radiation penetration in the ice and probably shielding effects by a magnetic field and (vi) the presence of organic compounds on or in the Europan ice crust. Our proposed mission will operate as a fully European and further on international mission, with the aim of providing the initial information required for later, larger missions to visit Europa. EUROX will involve both remote-sensing and in-situ research. Its mission architecture sees a single space craft deployed to Europa, launched by an Ariane 5. This vehicle will use conventional propulsion and a Venus-Earth-Earth flight path to travel to the jovian system in six years. Upon arrival at Europa, the space craft will commence remote observations of the icy moon, to determine the physical nature of the ice crust, and to investigate the presence of a subsurface liquid ocean. The orbiter will carry two independent vehicles (two penetrators) that will then separate, de-orbit, and penetrate the crust nearby or in the cracks to a depth of several meters. A suite of compact instruments will address the physical and chemical properties of the crust, as well as seeking organic compounds and pre-biotic material in the ice. The use of a laser communication system removes the need for a relay spacecraft in orbit around Jupiter, decreasing overall mission cost. Expected orbiter mission duration is on the order of two months, with each penetrator functioning for approximately 24 hours.
