  • A product semantic study of the influence of the sense of touch on the evaluation of wood-based materials
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197 .- 0261-3069. ; 52, s. 300-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on product semantics, this study investigated how the tactile attributes of wood and wood-based composites are perceived and interpreted semantically. The wood-based samples included ash, birch, elm, oak, pine, OSB (oriented strand board), two wood pulp-reinforced polylactide composites, Comp A and B and one wood-fiber reinforced polypropene composite, Comp C. The subjects rated the samples by the descriptive words natural, exclusive, eco-. friendly, rough, inexpensive, reliable, warm, modern, snug and solid. The most significant differences between the samples were found for roughness and for the descriptors, reliable, natural and solid. A principal component analysis yielded three attributes based on the tactile perceptions: reliable, old-. fashioned and smooth. The solid wood pieces were perceived as natural and oak was perceived as being exclusive. The composite materials presented a greater variation in terms of perceived attributes than the wood specimens.

  • Textile piezoelectric sensors – melt spun bi-component poly(vinylidene fluoride) fibres with conductive cores and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) coating as the outer electrode
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Fashion and Textiles. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2198-0802. ; 1:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The work presented here addresses the outer electroding of a fully textile piezoelectric strain sensor, consisting of bi-component fibre yarns of β-crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) sheath and conductive high density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black (CB) core as insertions in a woven textile, with conductive poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coatings developed for textile applications. Two coatings, one with a polyurethane binder and one without, were compared for the application and evaluated as electrode material in piezoelectric testing, as well as tested for surface resistivity, tear strength, abrasion resistance and shear flexing. Both coatings served their function as the outer electrodes in the system and no difference in this regard was detected between them. Omission of the binder resulted in a surface resistivity one order of magnitude less, of 12.3 Ω/square, but the surface resistivity of these samples increased more upon abrasion than the samples coated with binder. The tear strength of the textile coated with binder decreased with one third compared to the uncoated substrate, whereas the tear strength of the coated textile without binder increased with the same amount. Surface resistivity measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the samples subjected to shear flexing showed that the coatings without the binder did not withstand this treatment, and that the samples with the binder managed this to a greater extent. In summary, both of the PEDOT:PSS coatings could be used as outer electrodes of the piezoelectric fibres, but inclusion of binder was found necessary for the durability of the coating.

  • Towards Simulation of Geometrical Effects of Laser Tempering of Boron Steel before Self-Pierce Riveting
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 44, s. 304-309
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The automotive industry is continuously developing and finding new ways to respond to the incremental demands of higher safety standards and lower environmental impact. As an answer to weight reduction of vehicles, the combination of boron steel and composite material is being developed along with their joining process, self-pierce riveting. Boron steel is an ultra-high strength material that needs to be locally softened before the joining process. However, the joining process deforms the part. This paper investigates factors affecting the geometrical deformation during the tempering process and lists important phenomena that need to be included when simulating the tempering process.

  • Mapping of residual stresses in as-built Inconel 718 fabricated by laser powder bed fusion : A neutron diffraction study of build orientation influence on residual stresses
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Additive Manufacturing. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2214-8604 .- 2214-7810. ; 36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturing of functional (ready to use) parts with the powder bed fusion method has seen an increase in recent times in the field of aerospace and in the medical sector. Residual stresses (RS) induced due to the process itself can lead to defects like cracks and delamination in the part leading to the inferior quality of the part. These RS are one of the main reasons preventing the process from being adopted widely. The powder bed methods have several processing parameters that can be optimized for improving the quality of the component, among which, build orientation is one. In this current study, influence of the build orientation on the residual stress distribution for the Ni-based super-alloy Inconel 718 fabricated by laser-based powder bed fusion method is studied by non- destructive technique of neutron diffraction at selected cross-sections. Further, RS generated in the entire part was predicted using a simplified layer by layer approach using a finite element (FE) based thermo-mechanical numerical model. From the experiment, the part printed in horizontal orientation has shown the least amount of stress in all three directions and a general tendency of compressive RS at the center of the part and tensile RS near the surface was observed in all the samples. The build with vertical orientation has shown the highest amount of RS in both compression and tension. Simplified simulations results are in good agreement with the experimental value of the stresses. © 2020 The Authors

  • Tessellation-based stochastic modelling of 3D coating structures imaged with FIB-SEM tomography
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Computational Materials Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0256 .- 1879-0801. ; 197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To facilitate printing, coatings are typically applied to paperboard used for packaging to provide a good surface for application. To optimise the performance of the coating, it is important to understand the relationship between the microstructure of the material and its mass transport properties. In this work, three samples of paperboard coating are imaged using combined focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) tomography data appropriately segmented to characterise the internal microstructure. These images are used to inform a parametric, tessellation-based stochastic three-dimensional model intended to mimic the irregular geometry of the particles that can be seen in the coating. Parameters for the model are estimated from the FIBSEM image data, and we demonstrate good agreement between the real and virtual structures both in terms of geometrical measures and mass transport properties. The development of this model facilitates exploration of the relationship between the structure and its properties.

  • Grit Blasting for Removal of Recast Layer from EDM Process on Inconel 718 Shaft : An Evaluation of Surface Integrity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials engineering and performance (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1059-9495 .- 1544-1024. ; 25:12, s. 5540-5550
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The heat generated during EDM melts the work material and thereby allows large amounts to be removed, but an unfavorable surface of a recast layer (RCL) will also be created. This layer has entirely different properties compared to the bulk. Hence, it is of great interest to efficiently remove this layer and to verify that it has been removed. The main objective of this work has been to study the efficiency of grit blasting forremoval of RCL on an EDM aero space shaft. Additionally, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) has been evaluated asa nondestructive measurement to determine RCL presence. The results show that the grit-blasting processing parameters have strong influence on the ability to remove RCL and at the same time introduce beneficial compressive stresses even after short exposure time. Longer exposure will remove the RCL fromthe surface but also increase the risk that a larger amount of the blasting medium will get stuck into the surface. This investigation shows that a short exposure time in combination with a short grit-blasting nozzle distance is the most preferable process setting. It was further found that handheld XRF equipment can be used as a nondestructive measurement in order to evaluate the amount of RCL present on an EDM surface. This was realized by analyzing the residual elements from the EDM wire.

  • Selection of milling strategy based on surface integrity investigations of highly deformed Alloy 718 after ceramic and cemented carbide milling
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing Processes. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1526-6125. ; 58, s. 193-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High speed milling with ceramic indexable inserts is a current practice for manufacturing of gas turbine components in superalloys since it allows for high material removal rates. Ceramic milling is used for rough milling, which is followed by cemented carbide semi- and finish milling. The tool motion play an important role on the resulting surface integrity. The machining strategy of up or down milling will induce different degree of residual stresses and deformations. Increased knowledge of selecting the machining strategy with lowest impact will promote improved productivity by using ceramic milling to a greater extent based on the affected depth. The main objective in this work has been to correlate the residual stresses and deformations to promote a greater utilization of ceramic milling while still producing surfaces with acceptable properties. Prior investigations have shown that ceramic milling induce very high tensile stresses in the surface, exceeding the material's nominal yield strength. A second objective has been to explain these stress levels by thorough investigations of the deformation after milling. In this study, milling tests with new and worn ceramic and cemented carbide inserts have been performed in Alloy 718. The topography, residual stresses, deformation and hardness have been investigated for up, centre and down milling. Residual stress measurements were performed using X-ray diffraction, followed by evaluation of hardness and deformation, using hardness testing, light optical microscopy as well as electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD). These results have been used to determine an appropriate milling strategy based on lowest possible impact in respect to residual stresses and deformation. The results show a high degree of deformation after milling that differs for the up, centre and down milling. Based on these results, it is shown that up milling is preferable for new inserts but as the inserts wear out, down milling becomes more suitable since a lower degree of deformation and residual stress impact was observed. EBSD and hardness testing showed that the milling, especially ceramic milling, caused severe deformation of the surfaces resulting in grain refinement to a nano-crystalline level. This is most likely the explanation for the prevalence of the high tensile stresses without distorting or causing failure. © 2020 The Authors

  • Influence of successive thermal cycling on microstructure evolution of EBM-manufactured alloy 718 in track-by-track and layer-by-layer design
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Materials & design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-1275 .- 1873-4197. ; 160, s. 427-441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Successive thermal cycling (STC) during multi-track and multi-layer manufacturing of Alloy 718 using electron beam melting (EBM) process leads to a microstructure with a high degree of complexity. In the present study, a detailed microstructural study of EBM-manufactured Alloy 718 was conducted by producing samples in shapes from one single track and single wall to 3D samples with maximum 10 longitudinal tracks and 50 vertical layers. The relationship between STC, solidification microstructure, interdendritic segregation, phase precipitation (MC, δ-phase), and hardness was investigated. Cooling rates (liquid-to-solid and solid-to-solid state) was estimated by measuring primary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS) and showed an increased cooling rate at the bottom compared to the top of the multi-layer samples. Thus, microstructure gradient was identified along the build direction. Moreover, extensive formation of solidification micro-constituents including MC-type carbides, induced by micro-segregation, was observed in all the samples. The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique showed a high textured structure in 〈001〉 direction with a few grains misoriented at the surface of all samples. Finer microstructure and possibility of more γ″ phase precipitation at the bottom of the samples resulted in slightly higher (~11%) hardness values compared to top of the samples.

  • Characteristics of a modified H13 hot-work tool steel fabricated by means of laser beam powder bed fusion
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0921-5093 .- 1873-4936. ; 831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, a modified H13 hot-work tool steel (M-H13) was fabricated by laser beam powder bed fusion (LB-PBF). The effect of two types of post processing, direct tempering from as-built condition (DT) and conventional quenching followed by tempering (QT), on the microstructure and mechanical properties was evaluated. The typical microstructure in QT condition was tempered martensite with carbides along lath boundaries. In DT condition, melt pool boundaries and cellular structure from as-built condition were still observed. While comparable tensile properties and hardness were obtained, DT samples exhibited significantly lower impact toughness compared to QT samples. This was attributed to the difference in work hardening ability and strain rate sensitivity originating from different microstructures obtained under these two heat treatment conditions. The study was also focused on the softening behavior and the correlation with the microstructure of the two post treatments at the elevated temperatures. It was found that the DT samples showed lower thermal softening compared to QT samples. The evolution of carbides was discussed based on the microanalysis results and the JMatPro simulation. © 2021 The Authors

  • Measurements and dimensional scaling of spontaneous imbibition of inkjet droplets on paper
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : SPCI. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 31:1, s. 156-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate theoretically and experimentally the spontaneous imbibition of water based inkjet formulations utilizing paper capillary rise and imbibition of inkjet drops. We approximate the paper structure to a two dimensional anisotropic porous material, and using Darcy's law as a base, we derive dimensionless groups that scale drop imbibition. This derivation is based on a previous dimensional scaling of drop imbibition on thick isotropic porous material. We apply this scaling to a paper substrate by measuring the average drop imbibition rate, and perform paper capillary rise experiments to obtain the average system parameters required for the scaling. The results suggest that this approach is a valuable tool to predict drop imbibition rates on paper. We then continue and perform the same sets of experiments on a different paper with similar structure that is surface treated (surface sized) with CaCl2 salt, an additive that is known to improve print quality. We find that due to rapid aggregation of the colorant ink by the CaCl2, the imbibition rate is slowed down in the capillary rise experiments, i.e., on much larger scales compared to a single inkjet drop. However, the presence of CaCl2 has only minor effect over the average imbibition rates of single drops. Imbibition rates on the CaCl2 surface sized paper did not give adequate scaling as a result of the fact that the aggregation was not included the theoretical assumptions behind the scaling.
