- The REMinE project is organized in five work packages that comprise: detailedcharacterization and risk assessment of the mine wastes selected (WP2), identification of new processing methods for mine waste (WP3), characterization and risk assessment of the remaining residuals (WP4), outlining business opportunities and environmental impact in a conceptual model for sustainable mining (WP5). The project comprises case studies of historical mine wastes from three different European countries, namely Portugal, Romania and Sweden. The interdisciplinary research collaboration in this project is innovative in the sense that separation of minerals and extraction of metals not only are basedon technical and economic gain but also considers the environmental perspective.

Simulering av ytbeläggning på gjutna komponenter

- Inom forskningsområdet Ytteknik används modellering och simulering bland annat för att analysera ytbeläggningsprocesser på komplexa geometrier. Detta är ett multidisciplinärt område som täcker bl.a. elektrokemi, jontransport och Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) för beräkningar av strömningsfenomen. Numeriska modelleringsverktyg används i utformandet av processen för att optimera processparametrar både med avseende på ytbeläggningens struktur och förbättrad fördelning av ytbeläggningen. Genom M-ERA projektet som finansierats av VINNOVA har en modell tagits fram för att beskriva ytbeläggning av silver av ett gjutet radiofilter i en silvercyanidlösning. Med målet att ha en minsta ytbeläggningstjocklek på 1 μm har både den elektriska strömmen och ytbeläggningstiden varierats för att uppnå en jämn ytbeläggning och minska förbrukningen av silver. Med hjälp av mätningar på komponenter har man även kunnat validera modellerna.

A method to simultaneously measuring the position of more than one surface in metallurgical processes

- A method for measuring the position of at least one surface in a metallurgical process which includes the steps of providing a metallurgical melt, the metallurgical melt including at least a metal portion and a slag layer, providing a signal generator for generating signals at a plurality of frequencies over a frequency band, and providing an antenna for receiving the signals generated by the signal generator and for transmitting circularly polarized radio waves at the plurality of frequencies over the frequency band. The invention further includes the steps of disposing the antenna adjacent the metallurgical melt, transmitting the circularly polarized radio waves from the antenna toward the metallurgical melt, the circularly polarized radio waves being transmitted by the antenna at the plurality of frequencies over the frequency band, receiving reflected images of the transmitted radio waves through the antenna, the received reflected images of the transmitted radio waves having a substantially opposite circular polarization from the transmitted circularly polarized radio waves, determining a phase displacement between the transmitted radio waves and the received reflected images of the transmitted radio waves, transforming the determined phase displacement from a frequency to a time plane, and determining from the time plane transform a position of at least one surface of at least one of the metal portion and the slag layer.

Possibility of Hot Metal Re-Sulfurization During the Waiting Time in the Transfer Ladle

- The investigation on the possibility of hot metal re-sulfurization during the waiting time in the transfer ladle before the BOF was carried out. According to the results, the slag was no longer a pure liquid, and different solid phases were found distributed within the slag along with small portion of liquid slag. Almost all the sulfur was found in the solid phase in the form of CaS, which is only a small fraction of slag. On the other hand, the hot metal was found to have a limited contact with the solid CaS and liquid slag which led to a very poor kinetics for re-sulfurization. Therefore, the amount of re-sulfurization in the transfer ladle was found to be very low.
