    • Simulation plays a critical role in the design of products, materials, and manufacturing processes. However, there are gaps in the simulation tools used by industry to provide reliable results from which effective decisions can be made about environmental impacts at different stages of product life cycle. A holistic and systems approach to predicting impacts via sustainable manufacturing planning and simulation (SMPS) is presented in an effort to incorporate sustainability aspects across a product life cycle. Methods Increasingly, simulation is replacing physical tests to ensure product reliability and quality, thereby facilitating steady reductions in design and manufacturing cycles. For SMPS, we propose to extend an earlier framework developed in the Systems Integration for Manufacturing Applications (SIMA) program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. SMPS framework has four phases, viz. design product, engineer manufacturing, engineer production system, and produce products. Each phase has its inputs, outputs, phase level activities, and sustainability-related data, metrics and tools.Results and discussion An automotive manufacturing scenario that highlights the potential of utilizing SMPS framework to facilitate decision making across different phases of product life cycle is presented. Various research opportunities are discussed for the SMPS framework and corresponding information models. The SMPS framework built on the SIMA model has potential in aiding sustainable product development.

    • In ten years customers will select products not only based on price and quality but also with strong regard to the product value environmental footprint, including for example the energy consumed. Customers expect transparency in the product realization process, where most products are labeled with their environmental footprint. Vigorous companies see this new product value as an opportunity to be more competitive. In order to effectively label the envi-ronmental impact of a product, it is pertinent for companies to request the envi-ronmental footprint of each component from their suppliers. Hence, companies along the product lifecycle require a tool, not only to facilitate the computing of the environmental footprint, but also help reduce/balance the environmental impact during the lifecycle of the product. This paper proposes to develop a procedure that companies will use to evaluate, improve and externally advertise their product’s environmental footprint to customers.

  • Power Level Sampling of Metal Cutting Machines for Data Representation in Discrete Event Simulation

    • An extension to the application area for discrete event simulation (DES) has been ongoing since the last decade and focused only on economic aspects to include ecologic sustainability. With this new focus, additional input parameters, such as electrical power consumption of machines, are needed. This paper aim at investigating how NC machine power consumption should be represented in simulation models of factories. The study includes data-sets from three different factories. One factory producing truck engine blocks, one producing brake disc parts for cars and one producing forklift components. The total number of data points analysed are more than 2,45,000, where of over 1,11,000 on busy state for 11 NC machines. The low variability between busy cycles indicates that statistical representations are not adding significant variability. Furthermore, results show that non-value-added activities cause a substantial amount of the total energy consumption, which can be reduced by optimising the production flow using dynamic simulations such as DES.

    • In this paper we propose a method to assess technology-based product-service systems and help manufacturing companies in decision making with a new indicator: the environmental break-even point (e-BEP), equivalent to the economic indicator applied to environmental performance. A case study is presented to provide a concrete application of the indicator: when designing an optical sorter for electronic waste, the e-BEP revealed how many mobile phones must be either repurposed or recycled for the sorter to offset the system’s environmental impact. The e-BEP shows potential to make CEOs and production managers adopt a product life-cycle thinking in their technology investments.

    • In today’s highly competitive world, companies need to rethink how they create and capture value at all stages of their offering’s lifecycle. A major challenge is to integrate sustainability as a core source of value creation in their business model rather than as an add-on. E-Waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, and its value is still largely uncaptured. Urban communities generate high environmental and health impacts due to the e-waste produced by households. This paper aims to evaluate the value retained in refrigerators’ components at their end-of-life. This research work presents findings on how recyclers identify, categorise, and capture value from e-waste. Although we focus on refrigerators recyclers, the results could motivate refrigerators manufacturers to collaborate with recyclers for a more circular economy.

    • Biofouling is a major problem that affects the heat transfer efficiency of marine and coastal heat exchangers. The reduced heat exchanger efficiency results in energy loss and thereby affects the overall energy efficiency in the marine industry segment. Additional energy is required to compensate for the energy loss leading to increased fuel consumption which in turn contributes to global environmental issues like climate change. The current industrial methods of biofouling mitigation or removal from heat exchanger surfaces increase both operational and maintenance expenditure causing further environmental damages. This paper presents two models to provide an overview of the major environmental and economic impacts due to biofouling in marine heat exchangers. The study results suggest the need for sustainable biofouling prevention techniques to improve the energy and resource efficiency of marine heat exchangers.

It describes thedevelopment and follow-up of a method forincreasing sustainability awareness in sustainableproduction research. Several activities were carriedout to increase the awareness. Firstly) workshopswith researchers and industry on sustainability.Secondly) development of measures based onliterature and interviews with researchers. Thirdly)monitoring of awareness through concept maps.Progress was evaluated by comparing the awarenessof the population when the project started in 2010,and then again in 2011. The results show that theparticipants had shifted their view from primaryemphasizing technology towards a more balancedview of sustainability where social aspects were moreoften taken into consideration. According to theconcept maps methodology, sustainability awarenessin the population increased with 25%.

    • This document illustrates the project outputs of the Climate-KIC funded project “ClimaDYE”. The purpose of the project is to estimate environmental and in particular climate implications of a water-free dyeing technology using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) and to evaluate the business case for it. The outputs of the ClimaDYE project are three: 1. an economic and environmental evaluation of scCO2 dyeing of polyester (PES) fabric against two alternative dyeing technologies 2. an estimation of environmental impact of scCO2 dyeing of biofibers, to be confirmed by future physical tests on biofibers 3. a list of business opportunities for PES and biofibers dyeing with scCO2, to be confirmed by future physical tests on biofibers.As a result, this deliverable is to be considered as a blend of a feasibility study and a comparative study. This document contains the main analyses being done to obtain the project outputs mentioned above, and the project results in relation to the three outputs.
