    • Seaweed aquaculture can provide the growing human population with a sustainable source of proteins. Sea-based cultivation is an effective method for farming seaweeds on a large scale and can yield high biomass output. However, the quality and biochemical composition of the biomass is seasonally dependent, which limits the harvests to certain periods of the year. Here we show the possibility to extend the sea-based cultivation season of Ulva fenestrata when aiming for high protein levels, by post-harvest treatment in herring production process waters. We harvested U. fenestrata at an optimal period in terms of yield, but suboptimal in terms of protein content. We then cultivated the seaweed in onshore tank systems with the nutrient-rich process waters for 14 days. We monitored biomass yield, crude protein content, amino acid composition, and content of the health concerning metals arsenic, mercury, lead, and cadmium, as well as the sensory properties of the dried biomass. After cultivation in the process waters, biomass yields were 30 - 40% higher (210 – 230 g fresh weight) compared to in seawater (160 g fresh weight). Also, the crude protein and amino acid content increased three to five times in the process waters, reaching 12 - 17 and 15 – 21% dry weight, respectively. The protein enriched biomass followed food graded standards for heavy metal content, and consumption of the biomass does not exceed health based reference points. Additionally, no sensory attributes regarded as negative were found. This rapid, post-harvest treatment can help extend the cultivation season of sea-based seaweed farms, maximizing their output of sustainable proteins.

    • Connections made with laterally loaded dowel-type fasteners are important details in timber structures. According to Eurocode 5, their load-carrying capacity can be calculated with the so-called European Yield Model (EYM) and simplified rules for the determination of slip-moduli are given. The slip modulus is given as a mean value for the serviceability limit state and a simple reduction of slip modulus in the ultimate limit state is given in addition. Despite these simple regulations, it is well known that connections with dowel-type fasteners show a considerable non-linear load-deformation behaviour with different degrees of ductility. This ductility can enable the load redistribution in complex and statically undetermined structures and allow to achieve higher capacities compared to linear elastic design. In the paper, the deformation behaviour of connections with laterally loaded dowels dowel-type fasteners is studied based on more than 750 test results of bolted connections. The parameters influencing the slip-modulus, ductility ratio, and ultimate deformation are evaluated. It is focused on the effects of these parameters and the resulting variability in deformation behaviour. Recommendations are given on how different levels of ductility and deformation capacity can be achieved in dependency of the spacing of fasteners and other geometrical parameters.

Vi vill skärpa miljömålen och inkludera även ämnen som kväve, kalium och svavel, skriver professorer och forskare från SLU.

    • The term green infrastructure captures the need to conserve biodiversity and to sustain landscapes’ different ecosystem services. Maintaining green infrastructures through protected areas, management and landscape restoration requires knowledge in geography, spatial data about biophysical, anthropogenic and immaterial values, spatial comprehensive planning, and thus geographical information systems (GIS). To understand land use planning practices and planning education regarding GIS in Sweden we interviewed 43 planners and reviewed 20 planning education programmes. All planners used GIS to look at data but did not carry out spatial analyses of land covers. BSc programmes included more GIS than MSc programmes but very few taught analyses for spatial planning. As key spatial planning actors, municipalities’ barriers and bridges for improved GIS use for collaborative learning about green infrastructures are discussed. A concluding section presents examples of how GIS can support spatial planning for green infrastructures.

Tackling these problems simultaneously enables solutions for both issues by introducing systems where organic waste is turned into high-value products and safe fertilisers.

    • Human excreta are potential sources of plant nutrients, but are today usually considered a waste to be disposed of. The requirements on wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to remove nitrogen and phosphorus are increasing and to meet these requirements, more energy and chemicals are needed by WWTPs. Separating the nutrient-rich wastewater fractions at source and recycling them to agriculture as fertiliser is an alternative to removing them at the WWTP. This study used life cycle assessment methodology to compare the environmental impact of different scenarios for recycling the nutrients in the human excreta as fertiliser to arable land or removing them in an advanced WWTP. Three scenarios were assessed. In blackwater scenario, blackwater was source-separated and used as fertiliser. In urine scenario, the urine fraction was source-separated and used as fertiliser and the faecal water treated in an advanced WWTP. In NP scenario, chemical fertiliser was used as fertiliser and the toilet water treated in an advanced WWTP. The emissions from the WWTP were the same for all scenarios. This was fulfilled by the enhanced reduction in the WWTP fully removing the nutrients from the excreta that were not source-separated in the NP and urine scenarios. Recycling source-separated wastewater fractions as fertilisers in agriculture proved efficient for conserving energy and decreasing global warming potential (GWP). However, the blackwater and urine scenarios had a higher impact on potential eutrophication and potential acidification than the WWTP-chemical fertiliser scenario, due to large impacts by the ammonia emitted from storage and after spreading of the fertilisers. The cadmium input to the arable soil was very small with urine fertiliser. Source separation and recycling of excreta fractions as fertiliser thus has potential for saving energy and decreasing GWP emissions associated with wastewater management.     • Participation in planning has become a popular strategy all over the world in attempts to improve the relationships between citizens, planners and politicians, as well as the quality of new developments. Some projects have shown promising results, while others show reverse effects. A pilot project in the municipality of Uddevalla has had a somewhat different approach, not inviting the public into the actual planning, but to analyses of the current situation in selected areas of the municipality – Site or Area Analysis as a Participatory Method. This evaluation of said project shows an impact on the planning process as a whole, where citizens now feel more involved, where the novelty of the method in effect invites the inhabitants of a place to specify and phrase the issues and needs of their local situation. The report is written in Swedish.
