  • Nilsson, Ida, 1987- (författare)
  • Järnmalm, ödehus och framtidstro : En studie om kommunal planering i norrländsk landsbygd
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Municipal planning concerns supporting broader socio-economic interests that are linked to place-based resources, whilst promoting local development for the inhabitants. By protecting and utilizing the resources, it is assumed that they will benefit the wider society rather than an individual actor or interest – the resources become public socio-economic interests. Place-based resources such as minerals and desolate houses are also tied to land and specific places. They are often found in rural areas that have long struggled with demographic challenges such as negative population growth. Against the background of the tension between supporting public socio-economic interests whilst considering the interest of the local people, this thesis aims to examine how and under what conditions municipal planning takes place in rural areas with place-based resources and at the same time have negative population development. In the thesis, I use a northern Swedish rural municipality as a case to explore how this tension is played out. As a theoretical perspective, I use Deleuze’s and Guattari's (1987) view of desire as productive by producing assemblages of interest within which municipal planning is formed and transformed (cf. Beauregard 2020). The results of the study show that municipal planning in rural areas with place-based resources and negative population growth is shaped by socio-economic interests which are renegotiated into local interests. Through this renegotiation process the planning is formed through the desire to create population growth through the extraction of the place-based resources.  The thesis concludes that municipal planning in rural areas with place-based resources and negative population development is shaped through both the desire in place-based resources and the lack of desire. This demonstrates the need of further research in how these municipalities can handle the great uncertainties that the growing and fleeting desire in place-based resources create.

  • The study of urban form in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Urban Morphology. - : INT SEMINAR URBAN FORM. - 1027-4278. ; 13:2, s. 121-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early research on urban form in Sweden was undertaken before the First World War. After the Second World War research was influenced by the major criticisms levelled at comprehensive urban renewal and suburban mass housing. These criticisms were particularly on the ground that values embodied in the traditional built environment were being ignored. Increased interest in the study of historical urban fabrics was associated with the development of methodologies reliant on the concepts of typology and morphology. These development were dependent on the activities of individual researchers until the very recent development of wider co-ordinating research organizations.

  • Large Housing Estates in Stockholm and Jönköping, Sweden : Opinions of residents on recent developments
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • RESTATE is the acronyme for Restructuring Large-scale Housing Estates in European Cities: Good Practices and New Visions for Sustainable Neighbourhoods and Cities. All the participants in this project share the basic underlying conviction: if the problems of these large-scale housing estates are not resolved, they will increasingly hinder the good economic functioning of cities. The study draws on estates in ten European countries: France, Germany, Hungury, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Most results in this report are based on a survey carried out in the estates. The opinions and experiences of the inhabitants of the estates stand to the fore in this survey. This report is concerned with two Swedish cities, Stockholm and Jönköping; the same kind of information for estates in other countries in the RESTATE project can be found in parallel reports.

  • Large Housing Estates in Sweden. Overview of developments and problems in Jönköping and Stockholm
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • All over Europe massive numbers of people live in large-scale housing estates built after the Second World War. The estates were carefully planned, but now often manifest a mulitude af problems. They house large numbers of low-income households, the unemployment rates are above average and in some countries they have become concentration areas for ethnic minorities. Many estates are becoming increasingly associated with crime and social exclusion. The circumstances on the estates and policy initiatives associated with these are focus of the RESTATE-project. RESTATE is the acronym for Restructuring Large-scale Housing Estates in European Cities: Good Practices and New Visions for Sustainable Neighbourhoods and Cities. The study draws on estates in ten European countries: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The present report deals specifically with large housing estates in two cities in Sweden: Jönköping och Stockholm. The basic questions are about physical structure, demographic-, economic- and socio-cultural developments. The same kind of information for estates in other countries in the RESTATE-project can be found in the parallel reports

  • Araby-projektet. En utvärdering av ett lokalt utvecklingsarbete i bostadsområdet Araby i Växjö
  • 1998
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report presents an evaluation of the local development work in the housing area Araby in Växjö. Araby is a large-scale housing area with about 4900 inhabitants (1995). The municipal government of Växjö decided in 1996 to begin a local development work in Araby. The evaluation aims to describe the local development work regarding: 1. How the interplay between local, municipality and housing company actors has worked 2. How local initiatives to development has been supported by municipal physical planning 3. How the collabotation within the municipality and between the municipality officials and other actors has worked 4. How civil ascendancy has come to expression and 5. How new forms of physical planning has been used.

  • I mötet mellan projekt och process. Om samverkan
  • 2000
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis for the degree of Licentiate of Architecture is an inquiry into the possibilities and obstacles for a communicative planning practice in the regeneration of neighbourhoods. Focusing on the planning process it discusses the commonly used concept of collaboration and trust as a prerequisite of collaboration. It draws on communicative planning theory and the institutionalist approach in social science. The study includes a qualitative case study of a regeneration project in the neighbourhood Navestad in Norrköping. The regeneration project was officially described as a continuous process based on a participatory approach and collaboration between different planning levels. The project aimed to break the pattern of prior regeneration projects in the neighbourhood; projects with an ad hoc character based on an instrumental and objective planning approach. The thesis highlights two aspects of trust relations as momentous for collaboration in the regeneration project: the reciprocity in trust and the significance of prior experiences in the judgement of the risk in showing trust in the relationships between different stakeholders in the planning process. Different styles of planning governance within the regeneration project are identified. The analysis of the planning process shows that collaboration was obstructed by differences in the rationality of means between stakeholders acting in different governance styles. The thesis emphasizes that the institutional basis for developing governance forms that facilitate a communicative planning practice is too weak for breaking the pattern of objective and instrumental planning of the previous regeneration projects in the neighbourhood.

  • Advertising Stories of Second Homes in the Swedish Welfare State
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tourism Review International. - : Cognizant Communication Corporation. - 1943-4421. ; 18:3, s. 193-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to discuss the greatest expansion of vacation housing in Sweden for the period of 1960-1980. In focus are product advertisements related to new vacation houses for sale by producers of prefabricated wooden vacation houses. The empirical exploration is based on a content analysis of all issues of a widespread Swedish lifestyle magazine, published monthly between 1960 and 1980. A limited selection of advertisements is further analyzed from a perspective of discourse analysis. The selected advertisements are telling stories, a basic approach in advertising. As a result of the analysis a number of recurring stories can be constructed; the story of freedom of choice and of modern life, the story of multiple dwelling and of the good life, and of family unity. The stories could be stated to be closely connected to crucial values of the “people’s home”, the core principle of the Swedish welfare state.

  • Knowledge-based engineering in construction: the prefabricated timber housing case
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology in Construction. - : International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction. - 1874-4753. ; 13, s. 408-420
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish prefabricators of domestic buildings need to become more effective and efficient; the aim of this paper is to investigate the usefulness of rule-based IT support tools for this purpose. The current sales and design process at a Swedish timber volume element prefabricator is presented. The process was mapped and the early design phase was evaluated regarding information management and standardisation. It was found that information management during early design is often ad hoc and person dependent; therefore searching for information that could lead to reuse of past solutions is rather time demanding. There is a need for standardisation to promote reuse due to a mentality of designing one-of-a-kind buildings. Knowledge-based engineering is seen as an enabler to enhance the current situation and an IT support approach is suggested. A demonstrator stair tool is tested, which lets the seller discuss needs with the customer and then use the tool to assess cost and manufacturability. If design flaws can be found early on, waste activities downstream can be reduced. Standardisation could be realised through modularisation, which the implementation of an IT support tool could gain from.
