  • Carbon Assessment of a Wooden Single-Family Building : Focusing on Re-Used Building Products
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI. - 2075-5309. ; 14:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown a lack of studies with comparisons between primary (virgin) and secondary (re-used) building materials, and their embodied emissions. The creation of different scenarios comparing the environmental impact of virgin vs. re-used materials is also motivated by the scarcity of raw materials in the world and the emergency of mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from buildings. The aim of this study was to investigate scenarios, including new vs. re-used building products, applying the LCA method for a wooden single-family building. The findings showed a 23% reduction potential for total released (positive) CO2e when comparing the Reference scenario with Scenario I, using re-used wooden-based materials. Further, Scenario II, using all re-used building materials except for installations, showed a 59% CO2e reduction potential compared to the Reference scenario. Finally, Scenario III, which assumes all re-used building products, showed a 92% decreased global warming potential (GWP) impact compared to the Reference scenario. However, when including biogenic carbon and benefits (A5 and D module), the Reference scenario, based on newly produced wooden building materials, has the largest negative GHG emissions. It can be concluded that the re-use of building products leads to significant carbon savings compared to using new building products.

  • Förtätning av stationsnära områden för god tillgänglighet. Utveckling av en analys - och utvärderingsmetod
  • 2022

  • User involvement in Swedish residential building projects : a stakeholder perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing and the Built Environment. - Dordrecht, Netherlands : Springer Netherlands. - 1566-4910 .- 1573-7772. ; 30:2, s. 313-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One factor influencing quality in the building industry is the ability of users, such as residents, to identify and express their requirements for the product, i.e. the residential building. However, the handling of communication with users in building projects has been insufficiently specified and studied. Drawing on a study of user involvement in building project design, production, and management, this paper examines user involvement in Swedish residential projects. To map current perceptions and approaches, building industry actors met in four focus groups. Group participants were asked to reflect on the definition of users, communication handling, how information from users is used, and challenges and opportunities in user involvement. Our initial emphasis was front-end activities, but focus group results revealed that user involvement was a continuous process extending from project initiation to evaluating the finished project as a basis for future projects. Discussions indicated confusion about who constituted users in various situations but, regardless of level of experience, focus group participants agreed on the importance and potential of user involvement and on the need for specific methods to acquire useful input.

  • Improving the thermal performance of ventilation radiators : The role of internal convection fins
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International journal of thermal sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1290-0729 .- 1778-4166. ; 50:2, s. 115-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with heat output optimization of a ventilation radiator by varying the distribution of vertical longitudinal convection fins. A ventilation radiator, which combines ventilation air supply and heat emission to the room, has a higher driving force on air in between the radiator panels compared to traditional radiators and can for this reason have more heat transferring surfaces to improve thermal efficiency. Improving the thermal efficiency means a lower water temperature is required for heating and energy can be saved in production and distribution of heat in systems with heat pumps, district heating or similar. The investigation was made using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations while analytical calculations were used for verification of different flow and heat transfer mechanisms. Results showed that heat transfer can be increased in the section where ventilation air is brought into the room by slightly changing the geometry of the fins, decreasing the fin to fin distance and cutting off a middle section of the fin array. This change in internal design could mean considerable increase in thermal efficiency for the ventilation radiator as a whole.

  • Demand control and constant flow ventilation compared in an exhaust ventilated bedroom in a cold-climate single-family house
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Buildings International. - : Elsevier. - 1750-8975 .- 1756-6932. ; 15:4, s. 175-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A convertible, zoned ventilation system was field-tested in a modern, airtight Swedish home when occupied either by an experimental team or by a family. Indoor air quality in the master bedroom was monitored under four ventilation strategies. Relative to constant air volume strategies (CAV), demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) that was responding to CO2 concentration extracted more air when people were present, but less in total over 24 h. This elevated the indoor air humidity, beneficial in climates with dry winter air. Multiple monitors within the bedroom indicated that vertical CO2 stratification occurred routinely, presumably due to low mixing of supply air from a wall-mounted diffuse vent, spreading the air radially over the wall. This seemingly improved air quality in the breathing zone under local (ceiling) extract ventilation but worsened it during more typical, centralised extract ventilation, where air escapes the room via an inner doorway. The local extract arrangement thus seemed to yield both improved ventilation efficiency and reduced contaminant spread to other rooms. The noted air quality variations within the room highlight the importance of sensor placement in demand-control ventilated spaces, even in small rooms such as bedrooms.

  • Ventilation alone fails to prevent overheating in a Nordic home field study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022, Kuopio, 12 June 2022 through 16 June 2022. - : International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A field study conducted in a modern Nordic single-family house with high airtightness and insulation levels, attempted to control summer indoor overheating using night-time cooling strategies. Exhaust air flow rates were manually scheduled by the researchers (based on weather forecasts), analogous to what an engaged occupant - or a predictive system - might do. Air temperatures at a nearby meteorological station peaked at 30 °C during 6 days in June that saw only 44 hours below 18 °C. Temperatures recorded indoors at the test house reached 32 °C, due also to very large solar gains, and never fell below 26 °C over 8 continuous days. It appears that under extended heat conditions that are exceptional now, but foreseen to become more frequent, some modern Nordic homes cannot be temperature controlled by ambient ventilation alone. © 2022 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2022. • Influence of different ventilation levels on indoor air quality and energy savings : a case study of a single-family house
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sustainable cities and society. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-6707. ; 19, s. 165-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of different ventilation levels on indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy savings were studied experimentally and analytically in a single-family house occupied by two adults and one infant, situated in Borlänge, Sweden. The building studied had an exhaust ventilation system with a range of air flow rate settings. In order to find appropriate ventilation rates regarding CO2, relative humidity (RH) and temperature as indicators of IAQ, four ventilation levels were considered, as follows: (I) A very low ventilation rate of 0.10 L s-1 m-2; (II) A low ventilation rate of 0.20 L s-1 m-2; (III) A normal ventilation rate of 0.35 L s-1 m-2; (IV) A high ventilation rate of 0.70 L s-1 m-2. In all cases, the sensor was positioned in the exhaust duct exiting from habitable spaces. Measurements showed that, for case I, the CO2 concentration reached over 1300 ppm, which was higher than the commonly referenced threshold for ventilation control, i.e. 1000 ppm, showing unacceptable IAQ. In case II, the CO2 level was always below 950 ppm, indicating that 0.20 L s-1 m-2 is a sufficient ventilation rate for the reference building. The case III showed that the ventilation rate of 0.35 L s-1 m-2 caused a maximum CO2 level of 725 ppm; showing the level recommended by Swedish regulations was high with respect to CO2 level. In addition, measurements showed that the RH and temperature were within acceptable ranges in all cases. An energy savings calculation showed that, in case II, the comparative savings of the combined energy requirement for ventilation fan and ventilation heating were 43% compared with case III.
