• Context Awareness in Predictive Maintenance
• 2016
• Ingår i: Current Trends in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319235974 - 9783319235967 ; , s. 197-211
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Maintenance of assembly and manufacturing equipment is crucial to ensure productivity, product quality, on-time delivery, and a safe working environment. Predictive Maintenance approach utilizes the condition monitoring (CM) data to predict the future machine conditions and makes decisions upon this prediction. Recent development in CM leads to context aware approach where in parallel with CM measurements also data and information related to the context are gathered. Context could be operational condition, history of machine usage and performed maintenance actions. In general more obtained information gives better accuracy of prediction. It is important to track operational context in dynamically changing environment. Today in manufacturing we can observe shift from mass production to mass customisation. This leads to changes from long series of identical products to short series of different variants. Therefore implies changing operational conditions for manufacturing equipment. Moreover, where asset consist of multiple identical or similar equipment the context aware method can be used to combine in reliable way information. This should allow to increase accuracy of prediction for population as a whole as well as for each equipment instances. Same of those data have been already recorded and stored in industrial IT systems. However, it is distributed over different IT systems that are used by different functional units (e.g. maintenance department, production department, quality department, tooling department etc.). This paper is a conceptual paper based on initial research work and investigation in two manufacturing companies from automotive industry.

• Tackling the Sustainability of Digital Aging Innovations Through Design Thinking and Systems Thinking Perspectives
• 2021
• Ingår i: ICT for Health, Accessibility and Wellbeing. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030942083 - 9783030942090 ; , s. 179-184
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The digitalization of society brings many opportunities and challenges, especially on how we organize the welfare society in the future. This becomes especially pertinent as we are heading toward a global increase of older people, which will strain healthcare and bring the challenge of building sustainable solutions. In this paper, we argue that the unsustainable solutions within healthcare are due to them being defined and ‘solved’ with a single approach or approaches used in silos. We advocate that a more sustainable solution could be achieved by combining systems thinking and design thinking perspectives throughout the entire process—from problem definition to solution offering. A benefit of such combined perspectives is the ability to develop a shared context among all stakeholders, which helps uncover unique tacit knowledge from their experience. This will serve as a solid foundation to generate unconventional ideas that will lead to sustainable and satisfactory solutions.

• SMEs in the face of crisis : The supply chain risk management perspective
• 2022
• Ingår i: Increasing Supply Chain Performance in Digital Society. - : IGI Global. - 9781799897156 - 179989715X - 9781799897163 - 9781799897170 ; , s. 205-220
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• COVID-19 has shown how fragile our societies and economies are. Supply chains have particularly been affected. We all had to learn again that the basic supply of some goods is not as crisis-proof as we thought. Moreover, the strong division of labour and the concentration on a few companies in certain areas present considerable weaknesses in the case of a new external crisis such as the pandemic. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been affected by the current pandemic, particularly as they are highly sensitive to external threats. Using data collected between December 2020 and January 2021 through semi-structured interviews conducted with owners and/or managers of SMEs located in six different European countries (i.e., Austria, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Portugal), the chapter aims to provide fresh perspectives on how SMEs address supply chain risk management in times of an external and dynamic crisis.

• An Integrative Approach To Inventory Control
• 2009
• Ingår i: Rapid Modelling for Increasing Competitiveness. - London : Springer London. - 9781848827479 - 9781848827486 ; , s. 105-118
• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Inventory control systems consist of three types of methods: forecasting, safety stock sizing and order timing and sizing. These are all part of the interpretation of a planning environment to generate replenishment orders, and may consequently affect the performance of a system. It is therefore essential to integrate these aspects into a complete inventory control process, to be able to evaluate different methods for certain environments as well as for predicting the overall performance of a system. In this research a framework of an integrated inventory control process has been developed, covering all relations from planning environment to performance measures. Based on this framework a simulation model has been constructed; the objective is to show how integrated inventory control systems perform in comparison to theoretical predictions as well as to show the benefits of using an integrated inventory control process when evaluating the appropriateness of inventory control solutions. Results indicate that only simple applications (for instance without forecasts or seasonality) correspond to theoretical cost and service level calculations, while more complex models (forecasts and changing demand patterns) show the need for tight synchronization between forecasts and reordering methods. As the framework describes all relations that affect performance, it simplifies the construction of simulation models and makes them accurate. Another benefit of the framework is that it may be used to transfer simulation models to real-world applications, or vice versa, without loss of functionality.

• ERP Training through Traditional and Intensive Course Formats
• 2009
• Ingår i: Networked Logistics and Production at South-East Finland, St Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. - : Lappeenranta University of Technology. - 9789522147257 - 9522147257 ; , s. 145-166
• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Nowadays Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have a important role in the performance improvement and control of a company and its entire supply chain. Therefore, this system is a vital part of a company’s competitiveness and new approaches for learning are needed to be developed in order to provide knowledge and skills in faster and more efficient manner for employees. Our aim in this manuscript is it to show, how ERP systems could be incorporated in the logistics courses of a university. This environment provides good platform to test new course formats, since most of the university students do not have any previous experience with these systems. In this research the structure and contents regarding ERP system usage in certain courses in the logistics curriculum at a Swedish University are being presented. Essentially, a traditional approach, where computer sessions are incorporated in ordinary courses are compared to a new intensive and flexible course format entirely dedicated to ERP systems. Additionally, the two utilized approaches are analyzed through student evaluations based on courses arranged during year 2008.Research shows that both of the approaches offer good opportunities; the students appreciated the traditional approach, since it allowed them to receive both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills, while they felt the intensive to be beneficial in developing practical side further. Consequently, the best alternative could be to utilize both of these formats. Still, this research shows that skilled responsible lecturer, among intensive course setting, is quite possibly one route for faster learning and higher productivity oflecturing.

• The Future of Third-Party Logistics : Key Issues for a Logistics Integrator
• 2006
• Ingår i: Contemporary Research Issues in International Railway Logistics. - Kouvola : Lappeenranta University of Technology. - 9522142255 - 9522142263 ; , s. 67-87
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Logistics has increasingly been recognized as a vital part of an organization’s competitive resources. With an increased outsourcing of the logistics function, due to increasing competition and high customer expectations on service-level, there is a need for more professional and well-equipped logistics services. This need is emphasized by the tendency that competition increasingly takes place between supply-chains more than between companies. There is a development of actors, known as third-party logistics providers or logistics integrators, who can take the role as integrator for several companies in a supply chain. This article focuses on the driving forces of these actors and how they can stay competitive by providing customers specific logistics solutions. A case study is presented of a Logistics Integrator and three of its customers with a varying degree of integrated collaboration in the logistic chain, and some key issues are presented from the provider’s and the customer’s perspective.
