- Eco-neighborhoods with gardens on concrete decks are for several reasons increasingly being prescribed today in major Swedish cities. However, there is a lack of knowledge, experience, standards and guidelines as well as collaboration between parties and stakeholders when installing such systems. It is incredibly important to avoid any leakage during the lifetime of a green roof garden but this cannot be completely guaranteed with today’s installation practice and project management. At Sustainable City 2014 in Siena, we presented a paper about a new project aiming at bringing together researchers, government and industry to collaborative development of new and attractive solutions for green roof gardens with consideration to the environment and high requirements for durability, materials, construction and energy efficiency. This paper is a continuation of the paper presented in Siena and reports on the most recent results from the collaborative project which will finalize in November 2016. After that, the project will be further evaluated in a proposed continuation project for another couple of years.

Vinnovaprojektet tillhör utlysningen och programmet Hållbara Attraktiva Städer. Projektet har även tagit fram följande publikationer: Grönatakhandboken - Vägledning Grönatakhandboken - Betong, Isolering och Tätskikt Rapport - Arbetsprocessen Syftet med handboken är att bidra till anläggningar med hög kvalitet, hållbarhet över tid och nolltolerans mot läckage. Vi har lagt fokus på val av vegetationssystem då de till stor del är styrande för dimensionering av underliggande lager och bärande konstruktion och är en viktig nyckel för att uppfylla eftersträvad funktion.

Urban and peri-urban agriculture provides both food and income to many urban poor, but productivity of land is decreasing. Tackling these problems simultaneously enables solutions for both issues by introducing systems where organic waste is turned into high-value products and safe fertilisers.

- Grey water constitutes the largest fraction of domestic wastewater. It causes environmental sanitation and pollution problems if it is not managed well. If treated, grey water can be a resource for a variety of uses. A pilot system was constructed in February 2013 to treat grey water from a four-member household for sub-surface irrigation of local vegetables. A hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of 60 L m(-2)d(-1) and an organic loading rate (OLR) of 519-1,580 g BOD(5)m(-2)d(-1) were implemented on a multi-media filter of gravel, charcoal, geotextile and mulch (charcoal being the predominant layer) operated as a batched type-system, with a 36-hour retention time. The system was operated for 3 months, during which it showed remarkable removal efficiencies of 90.8 +/- 5.4 and 96.1 +/- 3.0% after 36 hours for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), respectively, and 95 +/- 3.1% for faecal coliforms (FC). The removal efficiencies at 36 hours, of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (Tot-P), total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS) were 39.0, 30.1, 85.2 and 78.6%, respectively. Plant response to sub-surface irrigation with treated grey water was largely masked by rainy season and the effluent had a limited effect on the soil.

- This article approaches urban ethics through critically examining the production and reproduction of an eco-modern socio-technical imaginary of sustainable urban development in Sweden, and the conditions and obstacles this poses for a just transformation. We see that notions of ecological modernization re-present problems of urban sustainability in ways that do not challenge the predominant regime, but rather uphold unjust power relations. More particularly, through an approach inspired by critical discourse analysis, we uncover what these problem representations entail, deconstructing what we find as three cornerstones of an eco-modern imaginary that obstruct the emergence of a more ethically-engaged understanding of urban sustainability. The first concerns which scales and system boundaries are constructed as relevant, and how this results in some modes and places of production and consumption being constructed as more efficient—and sustainable—than others. The second cornerstone has to do with what resources and ways of using them (including mediating technologies) are foregrounded and constructed as more important in relation to sustainability than others. The third cornerstone concerns the construction of subjectivities, through which some types of people and practices are put forth as more efficient—and sustainable—than others. Utilizing a critical speculative design approach, we explore a selection of alternative problem representations, and finally discuss these in relation to the possibility of affording a more ethical urban design and planning practice.

Regeringens ensidiga fokus på fosfor i detta avseende riskerar att skada det långsiktiga miljöarbetet. Vi vill skärpa miljömålen och inkludera även ämnen som kväve, kalium och svavel, skriver professorer och forskare från SLU.

Serious games in support of transformative multi-stakeholder sanitation planning for increased resource recovery: Specifications for game development

- Globally, 2.3 billion people lack sanitation. Innovative solutions are needed that allow for rapid service expansion to underserved populations. Serious games can bring new perspectives into rigid planning and decision-making by increasing the understanding of complex issues, supporting learning of alternative perspectives and enhancing stakeholders cooperation. Existing games are inadequate for addressing the sanitation challenge and current frameworks for game development are neither comprehensive, nor tailored to sanitation planning. The objectives of this report are a) to develop a generic framework for development of serious games supporting transformative planning and governance; and b) to develop a set of specifications for a serious game for transformative sanitation planning specifically, c) to present a sanitation planning game prototype, and d) to report on an assessment of this game prototype. The report is based on literature studies and prototyping with user tests. A comprehensive framework for game development is presented and specifications for a serious game in sanitation planning are described. Initial game prototyping found that not all specifications could be fulfilled. Yet, focusing the framework on the serious purpose of the game, its worldview, its content, and its context of use brought a different but useful logic into the game design process.

Garden structure is critical for building survival in northern forest fires – An analysis using large Swedish wildfires

- Despite increasing concern over wildfires in Fennoscandia, there are essentially no studies on the survivability of buildings within the wildland-urban interface of this region. We make use of four recent large-scale fires in Sweden to elucidate which factors are important for survival, using multiple logistic regression analysis of data collected at the sites. We obtained data on 187 buildings within the fire perimeters, nearly all with wood paneling and tile- or sheet metal roofing. 35 % of the buildings were lost or badly damaged. Results indicate that most buildings were approached by relatively low-intensity fire and that ignition primarily occurred through direct flame contact. The most important factor for survivability was the presence of a maintained lawn. The second most important was that no flammable material was present close to the building façade. Further, fire intensity often decreased close to buildings due to a larger portion of deciduous trees around gardens than in the surrounding forest. These factors were more important than specific features of the building itself, reflecting that the majority of buildings have combustible wooden façades. Our results suggest that the greatest potential for increasing building safety in the Swedish WUI is to keep the area immediately surrounding the building (∼5 m) free from tree litter and other flammable material. Also, since fire intensities are generally low, buildings can in most cases be defended with simple tools without compromising personal safety.

Riktlinjer för lek : reflektioner kring hur föreställningar om barn och barndom påverkar utformningen av staden

- Denna rapport har två mål, det första är att sammanställa och skapa överblick över hur, och med vilka verktyg några Svenska kommuner arbetar med planeringen av platser för barn; skolgårdar, förskolegårdar och lekplatser. Det andra är att utifrån sammanställningen diskutera och reflektera över några av de perspektiv som kan förklara svårigheterna med att gestalta bra städer för barn och unga i dagens planeringsdiskurs. Som grund till rapporten ligger en undersökning där frågor till 27 kommuner fokuserades kring; hur kommunerna själva styr planeringen av platser för barn; vilka riktlinjer/normer som används; och vilka förvaltningar som är inblandade i planeringen. Materialet från undersökningen utgör utgångspunkten för reflektioner kring varför barns tillgång till hela staden minskar samtidigt som de planerade och separata platserna för barn har börjat ifrågasättas. Att avsätta platser för barn, t.ex. lekplatser och skolgårdar, är ett sätt att hävda barns rätt till i staden, men vi vet genom forskning och erfarenhet att tillgången till hela vardagsmiljöer är viktiga för barns hälsa och utveckling. En stadsplanering med ett inkluderande perspektiv på barns rörelse och vistelse innefattar mer än att endast planera platser för barn, det innebär också en planering som stödjer barns rätt att skapa egna platser. I rapporten försöker vi reflektera runt två spår som delvis går in i varandra och hänger ihop.
