- A method is presented for the assessment and calibration of the elastoplastic behaviour of FRP confined concrete. The method is based on the evaluation of permanent deformations from observed experimental deformations and theoretical elastic response of confined concrete. The inelastic response of concrete and the parameters of its mathematical modelling are investigated. Closed form expressions are produced to relate the model parameters to the mechanical properties of the material. A strain-hardening Drucker–Prager model is developed which simulates both the hardening and softening material response with reasonable agreement to the experimental observations. The predictive ability of the model is verified through comparisons to numerous published experimental data and analytical models.

Confined Concrete Columns Stability with Longitudinal CFRP Reinforcement

- The stability and strength of concrete columns confined by tangential CFRP wrapping and longitudinal external CFRP sheet is studied. Plain and confined columns of slenderness l = 40 are tested. Two batches of concrete with different ultimate compressive strengths 25 and 50 MPa are investigated. The total number of specimens is 24 (sixteen 300 mm high cylinders for material properties and eight 1500 mm high columns, all specimens with diameter 150 mm). Unconfined and with one and two CFRP sheet layers confined concrete columns are tested. Further longitudinal CFRP sheet in one and two layers are added on the confined columns. The theoretical prediction of ultimate strength and stability of columns coincides rather well with experimental results. It is concluded that additional external strengthening of CFRP confined concrete columns by attaching longitudinal CFRP sheets is efficient. The two methods applied lead to similar results, that the additional longitudinal reinforcement is efficient for improving stability of confined columns in region of moderate slenderness 30

- External confinement by the wrapping of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites sheets provides a very effective method for the strengthening and retrofit of round concrete columns. New formulas to estimate the ultimate axial strain and second tangent modulus E2 above the unconfined concrete strength are proposed for concrete columns confined by the FRP jacket in which the fibers are oriented in the hoop direction. These formulas are based on the use of the asymptotic value of the differential Poisson ratio (the first derivative of the lateral - axial strain curve). Comparison with the experimental data available in the published literature is done. The formulas are shown to be able to provide satisfactory estimation of the ultimate axial strain and the second tangent modulus E2 of stress strain relation above unconfined column strength
