  • Architectural approach to planning in the extreme arctic environment.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: archiDOCT: Transformable Architecture. - 2309-0103. ; 4:1, s. 53-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme environments in Polar Regions share similar facilities and operations, design and planning challenges: extreme cold temperatures, structural problems, high standards for materials, resources limitations (including people), transportation and logistics. Nevertheless, they differ depending on local cultural and social traditions and climate challenges specific to a particular region. Environmental hardships create challenges that reflect on sets of architectural requirements. The paper discusses these challenges and their influences on form developing factors, site orientation and circulation, - factors that affect budget considerations as well. The paper also discusses criticality of addressing such impacts at the programming design stage especially in challenging environments, in order to avoid costly adjustments at later development stages. The paper argues that integrating an architectural approach into planning of construction and related to it activities in Polar Regions is critical for enabling sustainability and resilient strategies there. The importance of such integration comes from the fact that engineering-oriented developers follow strictly industry-specific technical regulations and standards. Simultaneously, planning construction work and design in extreme conditions becomes a more complex process that calls for a new methodology, which would differ from common regulatory “checklists” that most companies implement in their practices there. This paper outlines and categorizes recurrent and specific to extreme environment and conditions events based on select research methods that include verbal data collection and case studies analysis. Figures Of Merit method employed for identification of important lessons that can be applied across different settings; and the ‘HSB Sustainable Living Lab’ project is suggested for effectiveness and verification purposes.Understanding of relationships and influences between different facets of human society and architecture can help to find a design approach and optimize needs and requirements for various types of people living and working in extreme environments of Polar Regions, their societies and cultures.

  • The Industrial Ecology of the Göteborg City Region — a first appraisal
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Society for Industrial Ecology 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An infrastructure system – here, the industrial ecology of Gothenburg — is more important for society than we usually credit it for (cf. Technology is society made durable, Latour 1990) and is taken for granted by most inhabitants. Gothenburg is an unusually well-developed and interconnected infrastructure system. The first district heating facility was put in operation in 1952. Soon enough, waste was re-used and recycled into energy, into both electricity and heat. With time, more varied materials and sources became integrated into the system to also produce biogas and compost. The project makes a historiographic description of how the industrial ecology of the Gothenburg city region developed since the Gothenburg technical environmental flow system is unique in size, age, diversity of flows and functions. The study describes environmental flows and their actors in a networked organization. The focus on interconnectivity of the different actors, flows and sectors of Gothenburg requires the combination of several theoretical fields. Such theoretical fields include Networked Learning, which takes a relational stance in which learning takes place both in relation to others, and in relation to learning resources (Dirckinck-Homfeld et al., 2009); STS (Science Technology and Society), which study how technical innovation are affected by social, political and cultural values, and how these innovation affect, in turn, political, social and cultural values; (Joerges & Novotny, 2003); and Urban Metabolism, which uses models to facilitate the description and analysis of the flows of the energy and materials within cities, such as Material Flow Analysis of a city, and provides a metaphorical framework to study the interactions of natural and human systems in specific regions. Preliminary findings will be presented.

  • Pre-stressed Geodesic Gridshell
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Timber gridshells can cover large spaces with minimum material. However, with long-term creep deformations, small cross sections and high elasticity, there are potential stability issues. Historically, pre-stressing systems have been shown to prevent instability modes in unstable structures. In this project we investigate the benefits of pre-stressing a geodesic elastic bending-active gridshells serving as a lecture pavilion. Digital analysis and physical tests are interactively combined to study and implement various modelling and analysis techniques, pre-stress configurations and connection details. It is found that an internal pre-stressing system can significantly increase the stability of in terms of eigenfrequencies.

  • Defend, Retreat and Attack: Urban Waters and Valuation Practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Water Alternatives. - : Water Alternatives Association. - 1965-0175. ; 15:1, s. 175-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the river landscapes and concomitant values resulting from tensions between flood management and visions of a River City. The aim is to contribute to an understanding of the management of urban waters as valuation practices. We regard valuation practices as co-constitutive of current and future river landscapes. Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg, is located next to the sea, and the Göta River, Sweden’s largest water system, runs through it. Our empirical focus is on how this city approaches increasing risks of flooding. We explore three approaches that have been formulated in relation to flood management: defend, retreat and attack. We ask how these approaches are applied in the management of Göta River flooding and in the city’s vision of a future Gothenburg that embraces the river as a genuinely positive aspect of urban life. We present the case as a journey that takes us upstream from the river’s sea inlet port and through Gothenburg. During our kilometre by kilometre journey, the river’s appearance shifts. The varied river landscape mirrors the diversity in how its waters are valuated, both historically and in present times. The perception of urban waters is shaped by practices of valuation. These valuations are generative. They connect the value of water to other entities, actors, plans, activities and buildings, and they are thus key to the river landscapes that will eventually be realised. By way of conclusion, we identify a number of governance challenges that are particularly relevant to urban rivers.

  • A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF MULTIFUNCTIONAL STREETS_Final research report
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A state-of-the-art, quantitative systematic review of scientific literature on the theme of multifunctional streets was conducted, including scientific papers of the last 10 years, filtered from Web of Science and Scopus. The review is part of a 3-year research project (2019-2021) named: “Smart streets” (Smarta gator) led by Alexander Ståhle (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and financed by Vinnova (Swedish governmental agency for Innovation systems). The research project aims to develop a Street Multifunctionality Index (Gatufunktionsindex) to assess how existing and designed streets combine five different street functions - Social, Ecologic, Economic, Technical and Traffic - and also produce design guidelines for the design and planning of future multifunctional streets, either in new infrastructure or via retrofits. Within this project, the aim of the systematic review is twofold: first, to assess the degree in which the multifunctionality of streets is addressed in recent literature and provide an overview of the field by identifying where the general literature on the subject is trending, which are the recurrent issues studied, what themes are missing or being understudied; second, since an end product of the research project is to provide guidelines for urban design and planning practice, the review aims to identify the physical factors which have been empirically proven to support the different street functions, and especially those which support multiple functions. The second aim is pursued through focused thematic reviews, which complement the general overview of the field.

  • Byggande av lätta trähus i tätbebyggda städer
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Bygg & Teknik. ; 3, s. 24-26

  • Methodology for selection of production method in an early stage - improved conceptual design process
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IABSE Conference, Vancouver 2017: Engineering the Future - Report. ; , s. 1879-1886
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design of buildings and load carrying structures in early stages is a challenging task for a number ofreasons; scant information generally exists and several different requirements involving building structuresshould be managed, including technical, environmental and financial requirements. However, this phase ofthe design process is important and will fundamentally influence the following construction phase, as wellas the entire life of building structures. It is particularly important that the construction phase is properlyconsidered already in the design phase and that the production method selected is suitable for the designof building structures. The purpose of this research has been to improve the design process in theconceptual phase. The findings will highlight the benefits of design for production in bridge engineering. The aim has been to identify examples of practices and work methodologies that are of good caliber in theSwedish bridge construction sector. Early findings show that there exists a divergence between researchfindings and current practices. The research community has presented several participatory methodologiesfor the design process, such as Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) forthe potential of improving effectiveness in bridge engineering. However, studies of current practices inindustry show that these methodologies are difficult to implement and that there are hiddenconsequences. The processes developed should manage several requirements simultaneously, includingtechnical, environmental, health and safety, and financial. Competencies involved include StructuralEngineering, Architecture and Production Management, in addition to expertise in health and safety, materials science, environmental impact and procurement. Further, the intention is for the processes todeal with verification methods for the proposed conceptual solutions and risk analyses based on qualityassurance. Both new and existing building structures should be considered.
