  • Experimental evaluation of a rubber-epoxy polymeric system used in the rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure- Dataset
  • 2019
  • Annan publikationabstract
    • This dataset includes data related to water sorption analyses to support research findings stated in the article:"Experimental evaluation of a rubber-epoxy polymeric system used in the rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure: a case study in Sweden" with the following abstract: One rehabilitation method used mainly for wastewater sewers in residential buildings involves applying a rubber-epoxy composite to the inner surface of the aged pipeline. In order to understand the material’s performance and stability in operation, during which it is constantly exposed to deteriorative factors, the properties of the material were studied in the laboratory under artificial water and air aging conditions. Changes in the material were monitored by means of tests such as thermal analyses, mechanical testing and water absorption assessment.

  • Procurement of the most cost-efficient bridge through incorporating LCCA with BMSs : Case-Study of the Karlsnäs Bridge in Sweden
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bridge Engineering. - 1084-0702 .- 1943-5592.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) has recognized potential for rationalizing bridge procurement, but its use in this context is far from systematic and the integration of LCCA findings in decisions is often far from robust. Furthermore, although most bridge management systems (BMSs) include databases of relevant information, agencies do not use them effectively to improve future bridge investment decisions. This paper introduces a comprehensive approach for agencies to exploit their BMS to procure the most cost-efficient bridge design through fair design-build (D-B) tendering processes. The approach incorporates use of a novel LCCA technique, LCC Added-Value Analysis, that can be conveniently integrated with public agencies’ established procurement procedures and maintains contractors’ freedoms in D-B processes. The proposed approach allows bridge procurers to establish monetary LCC-efficient benchmarks and embed them in tender documents as core specifications. Hence the lowest LCC bid can be employed as the contract award criterion, rather the lowest bid in initial investment terms. The Swedish Transport Administration has recently procured several bridges using the approach, thereby gaining considerable cost savings. A presented case-study provides insights into various aspects of bridges’ LCC and illustrates analytical steps that other agencies could apply in bridge procurement.

  • OpenBIM methods and tools for schedule and cost management
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability and Automation in Smart Constructions. - Cham : Springer. ; , s. 37-43
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodologies and approaches are becoming topics of increasing interest within several infrastructural engineering applications. As far as Construction Management (CM) is concerned, BIM technologies provide a valid support-decision tool, which includes a repository of CM related data, useful for any further development and use. This work presents current Infrastructural Building Information Modeling (InfraBIM) implementation possibilities regarding the correlation between information digital modeling, schedule, and cost management dimensions. The methodology is applied to case studies simulation of excavation and construction phases in underground structures to generate budgeted cost and time schedules linked to BIM models. The major benefit in applying such an approach results in obtaining a model with different types of information that can be updated during the design and construction phases. Also, the associated workflow management system allows to update the 3D model, time schedule, and cost estimation while maintaining relations and interconnections previously defined between model components and specific information on their activities and cost. Another key result is about the chance to communicate design and construction schedules via Virtual and Augmented Reality (VAR) techniques, which provide a consistent support tool for the visualization of infrastructure projects.

  • Proceedings of the 14th ICOLD International Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams
  • 2017
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Every second year, the Technical Committee A (Computational Aspects of Dam Analysis and Design) of ICOLD organizes an international benchmark workshop on numerical analysis of dams. The purpose is to share knowledge and experience regarding numerical modelling within the fields of dam safety, planning, design, construction as well as operation and maintenance of dams. The Terms of Reference for Committee A state; ”BenchmarkWorkshops are organised to compare numerical models between one another and/or with reference solutions, including the dissemination and publication of results”. The 14th ICOLD International Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams was held from the 6th to the 8th September 2017 in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It was organized by the Local Organizing Committee, on behalf of the Swedish National Committee of ICOLD (SwedCold) and the ICOLD Technical Committee A. It was hosted by KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and one of Europe’s leading technical universities. With respect to hydropower and dam engineering, KTH has for many years been active within of the Swedish hydropower Center (SVC), a key centre for research and educational activities in Sweden. SwedCOLD established in 1931, and is one of the oldest members of the International Commission On Large Dams, ICOLD. The development of hydro power for electricity production was initiated in the late 19th century and made the large scale industrialisation in Sweden possible. About 2000 hydropower plants are in operation in Sweden today, producing almost half of the total electricity supply. Considering the many and relatively old dams in Sweden, organizing the benchmark workshop was important to increase the knowledge regarding managing aging hydropower structures. The 14th ICOLD International Benchmark Workshop has addressed current challenges regarding design and maintenance of existing dams and improved the understanding of these by exchange of experience on the use of numerical modelling for design, performance evaluation and safety assessment of dams. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the formulators/moderators of each theme for their outstanding work to prepare the themes, reviewing the papers and evaluating the results. I also want to thank all participants to the benchmark workshop for their contributions and their presence to this benchmark workshop. Finally, the support from the Technical Committee A and the support from the companies and organizations that sponsored this benchmark workshop is gratefully acknowledged.

  • Urbanism for Multimodal Transportation : Multimodal Transportation Performance Certificates (MTPC) for Buildings and Neighborhoods
  • 2017
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Multimodality defines the ability to travel with a choice of different transportation modes. This report combines different approaches and methods to analyze multimodality and inform about integration of multiple transportation modes with cities. It assesses three methods: green building and sustainable neighborhood certification systems (LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), accessibility indexes (Walk Score, http://www.walkscore.com/) and travel forecasting tools (Trafikverket’s Trafikalstring, Swedish Transportation Administration’s Trip Generation Tool, https://applikation.trafikverket.se/trafikalstring/). It also proposes instituting Multimodal Transportation Performance Certificates (MTPC) as a hybrid method. The focus is on urban form, physical integration of transportation systems in cities and on urbanism that can make multimodality possible. Accordingly, MTPC measures physical integration of different transportation systems (walking, cycling, public transportation and private car) with cities. Its indicators include design elements (streets, buildings, building façades, building heights, bike racks, parking lots, bus stops, subway exits, etc.), place characteristics (density, diversity, etc.) and accessibility (network access to local and regional destinations) that have indirect, but profound effect on travel.

  • Dynamic response of driven end-bearing piles and a pile group in soft clay: an experimental validation study
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents an extensive measurement campaign of the dynamic response of driven end-bearing piles and a pile group in soft clay. Results from measurements conducted on the free-top piles and and the piles joined in a concrete cap are presented. The measured frequency responses are subsequently used to obtain the impedances, characterising the dynamic stiffness and damping of the piles and the pile foundation. The piles are instrumented with accelerometers at several points along the length of the piles which allows to validate the dynamic motion of the piles atdepth due to pile head and pile cap excitation. Numerical predictions based solely on information of the small-strain soil properties obtained from extensive site investigations are compared to the experimental results. The numerical model captures the pile-soil-pile interactions and the motion of the piles within the soil well, suggesting that reliable predictions can be made for the considered soil conditions if the small-strain soil properties are well known.

  • Life cycle assessment as a decision support tool for bridge procurement : environmental impact comparison among five bridge designs
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0948-3349 .- 1614-7502. ; 19:12, s. 1948-1964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conventional decision-making for bridges is mostly focusing on technical, economical, and safety perspectives. Nowadays, the society devotes an ever-increased effort to the construction sector regarding their environmental performance. However, considering the complexity of the environmental problems and the diverse character of bridges, the related research for bridge as a whole system is very rare. Most existing studies were only conducted for a single indicator, part of the structure components, or a specific life stage. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally standardized method for quantifying the environmental impact of a product, asset, or service throughout its whole life cycle. However, in the construction sector, LCA is usually applied in the procurement of buildings, but not bridges as yet. This paper presents a comprehensive LCA framework for road bridges, complied with LCA ReCiPe (H) methodology. The framework enables identification of the key structural components and life cycle stages of bridges, followed by aggregation of the environmental impacts into monetary values. The utility of the framework is illustrated by a practical case study comparing five designs for the Karlsnas Bridge in Sweden, which is currently under construction. This paper comprehensively analyzed 20 types of environmental indicators among five proposed bridge designs, which remedies the absence of full spectrum of environmental indicators in the current state of the art. The results show that the monetary weighting system and uncertainties in key variables such as the steel recycling rate and cement content may highly affect the LCA outcome. The materials, structural elements, and overall designs also have varying influences in different impact categories. The result can be largely affected by the system boundaries, surrounding environment, input uncertainties, considered impact indicators, and the weighting systems applied; thus, no general conclusions can be drawn without specifying such issues. Robustly evaluating and ranking the environmental impact of various bridge designs is far from straightforward. This paper is an important attempt to evaluate various designs from full dimensions. The results show that the indicators and weighting systems must be clearly specified to be applicable in a transparent procurement. This paper provides vital knowledge guiding the decision maker to select the most LCA-feasible proposal and mitigate the environmental burden in the early stage.
