• Gender regimes, citizen participation and rural restructuring
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Genderation change in agriculture. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 978-0-7623-1420-1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    •
This book aims to unravel how rural gender regimes are constituted, enforced, made sense of and resisted, and ho struggles of resistance lead to empowerment and change in various countries in the four corners of Europe as well s Australia and India. The book focuses on the intricate relationship between laws and institutions and everyday life. It analyzes on the one hand how laws and institutions are constituted and on the other hand how gender regimes are built at the local rural level, sometimes in compliance with these frames and sometimes contesting them, The articles, in diverse ways, give voice both to women’s struggles for recognition and men’s voices in gendered rural societies. Through applying the concept of the welfare state and gender regimes within rural research, this book contributes to the further development of a comparative theoretical framework for rural gender studies. The importance of integrating rural gender studies into both the mainstreams of rural and feminist research has been emphasized in previous research, as has that of developing comparative analytical frameworks. The conceptual framework adopted in this volume wets out to meet this challenge by approaching rural gender relations and the meeting point of two core research areas: gender regimes and rural transformative processes. Research into gender regimes offers a promising analytical framework for comparing gender relations in diverse rural settings. At the same time, by addressing rural concerns deriving from the specificity of rural transition processes and gender regimes, the approach also contributes to an elucidation of the complexity of citizenship.

  • Vad gör elitens söner i skolan?
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    •

  • What is Gender in Organizations?
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    •
In recent decades different constructionist approaches, frequently gathered under the label of ‘doing gender’, have become influential in Scandinavian gender research (Widerberg 2007). In this text we focus on just what ‘doing gender’ in organisations is seen to be. What is gender and how can it be looked at with doing gender as the point of departure? Our initial inquiry involves taking a look at what the suggested definition of doing gender is in research on gender in organisations. We look at the criticism directed towards doing gender and how this has been treated. After going through the research on doing gender, we then outline our view of gender in organisations. We argue in favour of keeping a “divided eye” on how actors do gender via an analytical look at ‘where they have been’ and ‘where they are heading’, in relation to context and practices, and in this way being able to focus on the process of how gender is done. Following this we present some methodological implications arising from our view on gender with regard to two ongoing research projects on gender and leadership in two different organisational contexts. Finally, we give a summary of our ways of reasoning along with one or two observations on our view of gender and approaches to studying organisations.

  • "We are only women here" : Women as norm for leadership
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Engendering Leadership Through Research and Practice : Conference Proceedings, Perth, 21-24 July 2008. - 978-1-74052-179-6 ; s. 398-406
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •
Feminist organizational research on women in leadership positions has largely focused on women managers, and their terms in male dominated work environments. The gender structuring in these organizations correspond with the gender order in society with male domination on positions of power and the majority of women in positions with less power. This study explores how the majority position affects women leaders workplace experiences and sense of belongingness in organizations. It also examines how women managers negotiate meanings of gender and leadership when they find themselves in majority at positions of power. Results suggest that the majority position opens up various ways of challenging and transforming prevailing male constructions of leadership. The managers do not have to relate to pre existing notions of leadership. Women constitute the norm in the organization in the sense that it is the things they do at work that constitutes leadership. They enjoy having power to shape the organization and they are constructed as competent managers. Moreover, they do not perceive themselves as part of a gendered category as managers. At the same time however, women’s subordination in gender power relations in society affects the social constructions of gender identity. Men in the organization are highly valued and the women managers strive to increase their numbers.

  • Transition in men's caring identities : From home-based care to nursing home placement
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Older People Nursing. - 1748-3735 .- 1748-3743. ; 3:2, s. 131-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •
Keywords:

caring;

gender;

informal care;

nursing home

Objectives.  The aim of this study is to describe, from a gender identity perspective, the experiences of older men involved in the process of caring for a partner at home and the placement into a nursing home.

Background.  Few studies have paid attention to the importance of gender when considering the social experiences of older men providing care for an ill spouse and finally placing a partner in a nursing home. Further understanding is much needed of how older men experience the process of caring for a spouse from a gender identity perspective.

Design.  A qualitative constructivist approach was adopted for this study.

Participants.  Data consists of interviews with seven men that have been informal carers and experienced the placement of their wife in a nursing home.

Methods.  Interviews were analysed with a constructivist approach.

Results.  The results indicate that men go through two transitions in their gender identity during the caregiving process and placement. From the mutual loving relationship of being a loving husband, the social responsibility of daily care of their wives changes the situation into that of being a caring husband, and finally with the move to a nursing home there is a transition from intimate care to a relationship based on friendship.

Conclusions.  The results show that older caregiving men undergo a process involving a reconstruction of gender identity. To formally recognize men’s caring activities and to make them sustainable, we believe that men in an informal caring relationship need support.

Relevance to clinical practice.  Nurses need to recognize the identity struggles resulting in sadness and suffering that are related to changes in men’s lives during the caregiving process. Understanding the dynamics and changes that occur when men take on a caring task is important for the development of their role as carers.

  • Content of and attitudes towards an intervention program. School administrators’ and students perceptions
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    •
The aim of the study is to examine how one administration in a school with above average national test results works to reduce student behavior problems and promote a functional environment in one English speaking school in Stockholm, Sweden.

The methods used are a case study of one school with interviews and a questionnaire. The grades the students received were compared to the national average and the school environment for the students and administration was reviewed.

The results are based on the relationship between a strong administration and a positive school environment as described by the participants. Finally the interventions realized in that school were contrasted with the interventions outlined and suggested in the current literature.

The conclusion is that the research done for this study suggests that there is a relationship between a strong administration and children performing well on standardized tests. It also suggests that both the students and the administration, under these circumstances, feel good about school.

  • "The hard thing is the changes" : The importance of continuity for older men caring for their wives
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Quality in Ageing. - 1471-7794. ; 8:2, s. 5-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    •
Few studies have been conducted into the contextual and relational aspects of male caregiving that include analysis by gender and family relationships. The aim was to gain understanding of the experience of older men as caregivers for an ill spouse. A narrative approach was adopted for this study. Interviews were conducted with three older men between 65 and 78 years, who had been caring for their wives for between one and 12 years. Two main categories emerged: taking on a new and unfamiliar role, and learning to live with the new role. The results also show how themen seek to maintain continuity in their relationships with the wives they are caring for. The findings can be understood in the light of a major life transition of how older men providing care for a spouse create new roles and how they cope with the changes in the marital relationship. A sense ofcontinuity in the process of caring is important for men to help them find the strength to continue as caregivers.
