    • This dissertation analyses the films of the Norwegian film director Erik Lochen. Erik Lochen became something of a legend in the Norwegian cinema; as a heroic modernist who would not compromise. He made at least 29 short documentaries and two feature films in the period from 1950 to 1977. He also wrote the scripts for two feature films directed by Jan Erik Düring. His first short film Citizens of Tomorrow were produced in 1950 for the municipal cinemas of Norway’s capital Oslo. This study gives the background for the production of short documentary films in Norway in the 1950s and 1960s. Lochens short films are analysed and the four main themes that dominate these films; The child Nature The small community and The importance of art. Together these themes form a dream of the future. In his feature films The Hunt (1959 and Remonstrance(1972 these themes are explored in a different context, together with the problem of mimetic desire that generates violence and death. His short films showed a concern for form, a play on fabulation ruptures and excesses. His feature films takes this play on filmform further. Inspired by Bertolt Brecht, and later by absurd theatre, Lochen created a modernist cinema that is unique in the history of Norwegian cinema. This dissertation also examines the contexts that surrounded and influenced Lochen and his filmproduction. The production company ABC-Film, that he established with five colleagues in 1950 are discussed besides a short examination of how the authorial legend that surrounded him shaped and still shapes the way Norwegians have regarded his films.
