  • Försök till tidig diagnos av kariessjukdomen
  • 1980
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the present thesis was to find a test for prediction of caries activity which would be useful in routine clinical work.Correlations between oral health, general health, food habits and socioeconomic conditions were investigated in 4- and 8-year-old children. It was found that the salivary secretion rate and the prevalence of oral lactobacilli were factors which might be useful in caries prediction. In 5- and 8-year-old children negative correlations between caries frequency and secretion rate, pH and buffer effect of saliva were demonstrated. However, these parameters showed a wide range of variation.A dip-slide test (Dentocult®), for determination of the number of lactobacilli in saliva, were investigated. The test proved to be reliable for determining of the number of lactobacilli in saliva. The clinical use of information on salivary secretion rate and number of lactobacilli in saliva in prediction of caries activity was examined in 115 14-year-old children over a period of 64 weeks. The number of lactobacilli in saliva, but not the salivary secretion rate, was correlated to caries activity. The number of lactobacilli in saliva seems to reflect the frequency of ingested fermentable carbohydrates and indirectly the risk for initiation of carious lesions. However, when the lactobacillus test is used it is important that there are no such areas of microbial retention on the teeth, as open cavities, poorly executed conservations, dentures or orthodontic bands. The lactobacillus test would make it possible to individualize prophylactic caries treatment.

  • Adaptive Response in Human Skeletal Muscle Subjected to Prolonged Eccentric Training
  • 1983
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sports Medicine. - 0172-4622 .- 1439-3964. ; :4, s. 177-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The peripheral adaptation process associated with repeating eccentric training over a longer period of time was studied in m. vastus lateralis of eleven healthy males aged 24 +/- 4 years. The maximal dynamic concentric muscle strength was only slightly improved after 8 weeks of training. However, eccentric work capacity was dramatically increased (375%). A maximal eccentric stint immediately after fulfilled 8 weeks of training caused a selective glycogen depletion from the type 28 fibers. An increased number of type 2C fibers was observed. The ultrastructure analysis showed an essentially well-preserved fine structure. Volume density of mitochondria was somewhat higher in all fiber types after training. Z-band widths were not affected by eccentric training. It is concluded that skeletal musculature adapts itself in a functional manner to the extreme tension demands put on them. Improved coordination and reorganization of the contractile apparatus of muscle fibers are the determining mechanisms of this adaptation.

  • Effect of preoperative paracetamol on pain after oral surgery.
  • 1983
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. - 0031-6970 .- 1432-1041. ; 24:1, s. 63-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A double-blind, randomized cross-over trial was carried out in 50 patients undergoing surgical removal of bilaterally impacted lower wisdom teeth. Surgery in each patient was performed twice and paracetamol 1000 mg was administered once preoperatively and once postoperatively. The time interval to additional analgesic intake and the pain intensity up to and at that time were assessed. There was no difference between the 2 treatments. It was concluded that preoperative paracetamol does not offer any clinical advantage in patients who undergo surgical removal of impacted lower wisdom teeth.

  • Metabolism of articular cartilage proteoglycans in vitro : effects of synovial membrane products and mechanical pressure
  • 1982
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The effect of synovial membrane products and mechanical pressure upon the metabolism of articular cartilage proteoglycans has been studied in vitro. The degradation of cartilage proteoglycans was studied in an organ culture system and measured as the release of [35S ] sulphate from prelabelled cartilage. The effect of synovial membrane products upon the synthesis of proteoglycans was studied in a chondrocyte monolayer system and the effect of mechanical pressure upon the synthesis of proteoglycans in an organ culture system. In both types of experiments [35S] sulphate was used as precursor. The findings may be summarized as follows1 Conditioned synovial medium (control-SM) enhanced the degradation and reduced the synthesis of cartilage proteoglycans. In addition the degradation was further enhanced when the synovial tissue had been cultured in the presence of dextran sulphate.2 Conditioned medium from synovial tissue cultured in the presence of indo-methacin (indo-SM), significantly reduced the synthesis of cartilage proteoglycans in chondrocyte cultures and reduced, although non-significantly, the degradation of proteoglycans in whole cartilage cultures.3 Addition o f the prostaglandins E1 or E2 (PGE1 or PGE2 ) together with indo-SM to the cartilage cultures greatly enhanced cartilage degradation whereas the addition of PGE1 or PGE2 together with control-SM had no effect compared with that of control-SM alone.4 Conditioned medium from synovial tissue cultured in the presence of low doses of glucocorticoids reduced cartilage degradation compared with control-SM. However, addition of control-SM together w ith low concentrations of glucocorticoids to the cartilage cultures significantly enhanced cartilage degradation.5 Conditioned medium from synovial tissue cultured with actinomycin D or cycloheximide did not enhance cartilage degradation compared with cartilage cultured alone.6 A continuous pressure of approximately 30 kgfcm-2 on cultures of cartilage reduced both the synthesis and the degradation o f cartilage proteoglycans.Although it is difficult to extrapolate from the in vitro to the in vivo situation, it is proposed that some factor(s) from the synovial membrane have the capacity to enhance the degradation and reduce the synthesis o f articular cartilage proteoglycans. From these experiments it cannot be completely excluded that treatm ent of arthritic joints with non-steroidal or streroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may result under certain conditions in enhanced joint damage. It is also suggested that under certain conditions the metabolism o f cartilage proteoglycans could be directly affected by mechanical stress.
