  • The Ab Initio No-core Shell Model
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Few-Body Systems. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-5411 .- 0177-7963. ; 45:2, s. 111-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This contribution reviews a number of applications of the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) within nuclear physics and beyond. We will highlight a nuclear-structure study of the A = 12 isobar using a chiral NN + 3NF interaction. In the spirit of this workshop we will also mention the new development of the NCSM formalism to describe open channels and to approach the problem of nuclear reactions. Finally, we will illustrate the universality of the many-body problem by presenting the recent adaptation of the NCSM effective-interaction approach to study the many-boson problem in an external trapping potential with short-range interactions. This article is based on the presentation by C. Forssén at the Fifth Workshop on Critical Stability, Erice, Sicily.

  • The Manhattan Project - a part of physics history
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 41:6, s. 493-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current physics textbooks tend to exclude military applications, but it is explained here how a study of the Manhattan project—the devastatingly successful attempt to develop an atomic bomb—can show students how the lives and work of physicists are shaped by events in society. Much of the original source material is available in books and on the internet (and referenced here), which allows students to discover the views of the scientists for themselves.

  • Conformal field theory approach to the two-channel Anderson model
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-8853. ; 272-276:SUPPL. 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The two-channel Anderson impurity model serves as a prototype for describing heavy-fermion materials with a possible mixed-valent regime with both quadrupolar and magnetic character. We report on the low-energy physics of the model, using a conformal field theory approach with exact Bethe Ansatz results as input.

  • Reduced photoluminescence from InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well structures following 40 MeV iodine ion irradiation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physica. B, Condensed matter. - : Elsevier. - 0921-4526 .- 1873-2135. ; 404:23-24, s. 4925-4928
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects following ion irradiation of GaN-based devices are still limited. Here we present data on the photoluminescence (PL) emitted from InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) structures, which have been exposed to 40 MeV I ion irradiation. The PL is reduced as a function of applied ion fluence, with essentially no PL signal left above 1011 ions/cm2. It is observed that even the ion fluences in the 109 ions/cm2 range have a pronounced effect on the photoluminescence properties of the MQW structures. This may have consequences concerning application of InGaN/GaN MQW’s in radiation-rich environments, in addition to defect build-up during ion beam analysis.

  • The FERRUM project : experimental and theoretical transition rates of forbidden [Sc II] lines and radiative lifetimes of metastable ScII levels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 480:2, s. 575-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. In many plasmas, long-lived metastable atomic levels are depopulated by collisions (quenched) before they decay radiatively. In low-density regions, however, the low collision rate may allow depopulation by electric dipole (E1) forbidden radiative transitions, so-called forbidden lines (mainly M1 and E2 transitions). If the atomic transition data are known, these lines are indicators of physical plasma conditions and used for abundance determination. Aims. Transition rates can be derived by combining relative intensities between the decay channels, so-called branching fractions (BFs), and the radiative lifetime of the common upper level. We use this approach for forbidden [Sc II] lines, along with new calculations. Methods. Neither BFs for forbidden lines, nor lifetimes of metastable levels, are easily measured in a laboratory. Therefore, astrophysical BFs measured in Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra of the strontium filament of Eta Carinae are combined with lifetime measurements using a laser probing technique on a stored ion-beam (CRYRING facility, MSL, Stockholm). These quantities are used to derive the absolute transition rates (A-values). New theoretical transition rates and lifetimes are calulated using the CIV3 code. Results. We report experimental lifetimes of the Sc II levels 3d(2) a(3)P(0,1,2) with lifetimes 1.28, 1.42, and 1.24 s, respectively, and transition rates for lines from these levels down to 3d4s a(3)D in the region 8270-8390 angstrom. These are the most important forbidden [Sc II] transitions. New calculations for lines and metastable lifetimes are also presented, and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Arithmetic and Hyperbolic Structures in String Theory
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of an introductory text followed by two separate parts which may be read independently of each other. In Part I we analyze certain hyperbolic structures arising when studying gravity in the vicinity of spacelike singularities (the BKL-limit). In this limit, spatial points decouple and the dynamics exhibits ultralocal behaviour which may be mapped to an auxiliary problem given in terms of a (possibly chaotic) hyperbolic billiard. In all supergravities arising as low-energy limits of string theory or M-theory, the billiard dynamics takes place within the fundamental Weyl chambers of certain hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras, suggesting that these algebras generate hidden infinite-dimensional symmetries of gravity. We investigate the modification of the billiard dynamics when the original gravitational theory is formulated on a compact spatial manifold of arbitrary topology, revealing fascinating mathematical structures known as galleries. We further use the conjectured hyperbolic symmetry E10 to generate and classify certain cosmological (S-brane) solutions in eleven-dimensional supergravity. Finally, we show in detail that eleven-dimensional supergravity and massive type IIA supergravity are dynamically unified within the framework of a geodesic sigma model for a particle moving on the infinite-dimensional coset space E10/K(E10). Part II of the thesis is devoted to a study of how (U-)dualities in string theory provide powerful constraints on perturbative and non-perturbative quantum corrections. These dualities are typically given by certain arithmetic groups G(Z) which are conjectured to be preserved in the effective action. The exact couplings are given by moduli-dependent functions which are manifestly invariant under G(Z), known as automorphic forms. We discuss in detail various methods of constructing automorphic forms, with particular emphasis on a special class of functions known as (non-holomorphic) Eisenstein series. We provide detailed examples for the physically relevant cases of SL(2,Z) and SL(3,Z), for which we construct their respective Eisenstein series and compute their (non-abelian) Fourier expansions. We also discuss the possibility that certain generalized Eisenstein series, which are covariant under the maximal compact subgroup K(G), could play a role in determining the exact effective action for toroidally compactified higher derivative corrections. Finally, we propose that in the case of rigid Calabi-Yau compactifications in type IIA string theory, the exact universal hypermultiplet moduli space exhibits a quantum duality group given by the Picard modular group SU(2,1;Z[i]). To verify this proposal we construct an SU(2,1;Z[i])-invariant Eisenstein series, and we present preliminary results for its Fourier expansion which reveals the expected contributions from D2-brane and NS5-brane instantons.

  • Atoms through the looking glass - a relativistic challenge
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Physics. - 1208-6045. ; 86:1, s. 99-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The search for weak-interaction induced atomic parity non-conservation, initiated in the 70s, challenges both theory and experiment. Since the weak interaction is very short-range, the atomic effects increase rapidly with nuclear charge, as Z^3. The focus has thus been on heavy atoms, where relativistic effects are essential, and nuclear size must be taken into account. The generalization of atomic many-body methods to relativistic systems involved both computational and formal difficulties, incorporating methods developed in quantum electrodynamics. Twenty years ago, the ability was emerging to treat atomic pair correlation in a relativistic framework. The application to many-electron systems opened for comparison with many atomic properties, such as isotope shifts, hyperfine structure and hyperfine anomalies, which reflect nuclear properties. In addition, the search for simultaneous violation of both parity and time reversal symmetry involves different types of effects, including nuclear ”Schiff moments”. Comparison between computed and experimental results for highly charged hydrogen-like systems provides a test of the theoretical and numerical treatment of the electron-nucleus interaction and of the description of nuclear distributions.

    • Our knowledge of the properties of atomic nuclei rests mainly on the study of nuclear reactions and radioactive decays. The latter is extremely valuable and often provides the first information on newly synthesized nuclei, but the former has the great advantage of its flexibility. It allows us to vary the degrees-of-freedom in the nucleus that are important such as the excitation energy, the angular momentum, or the rotational frequency (spin) of the final products. By selecting a suitable combination of projectile target and beam energy, we can obtain a variety of results ranging from the reaction products to the character of the states that are populated. © 2006, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

  • Purification of radioactive neutron-rich argon beams using an ion source in charge breeding mode
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576 .- 0167-5087. ; 556:1, s. 31-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of nuclear properties of some neutron-rich asymmetric fission isotopes at an ISOL laboratory present a severe problem when a plasma ion source is used as the primary ion-source. The problem is associated with intense multi-charged symmetric fission contaminants that cannot be mass-separated from asymmetric fission products. In this work we demonstrate how this problem can be overcome on-line by using an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) as a charge-breeding secondary ion-source. Mixed Ar+/Kr2+/Xe3+ radioactive beams from an plasma ion-source were injected into the PHOENIX ECRIS that currently is installed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN in order to improve the ratio of Ar to the background contaminants of Kr and Xe. The signal to noise ratio was improved by more than two orders of magnitude after charge-breeding and mass-separation of the Ar8+, Ar9+ beams. The information on the decay of the Ar-48 nucleus obtained in these tests is useful for a better understanding of the origin of the Ca-48/Ca-46 meteorite isotopic anomaly. Potential applications of the method are discussed.
