- In this paper, I discuss my personal experience of the issues that can arise when adopting critical realism in academic contexts dominated by irrealist (positivist, phenomenological and post-structuralist) methodological approaches. I draw inspiration for my analysis from the concept of Gramscian hegemony and the concept of ‘authenticity’. These concepts are related because hegemonic processes prevent individuals from freely expressing themselves. In my case, academic hegemony has resulted in social pressure to sacrifice my authentic critical realist self in order to achieve academic success. I also discuss groupthink dynamics, suggesting that they are a mechanism by which hegemony–and denial of individual authenticity–can be achieved. This paper is meant to be a theoretical and reflexive discussion, which could be the starting point for empirical studies investigating the situation of a critical realist in a hegemonic academic context.

Home setting after stroke, facilitators and barriers: a systematic literature review

- This paper seeks to improve the understanding of the interaction between patients with stroke and the physical environment in their home settings. Stroke care is increasingly performed in the patient’s home. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to identify the existing knowledge about facilitators and barriers in the physical environment of home settings for the stroke rehabilitation process. Based upon Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, a Boolean search strategy was performed in the databases; CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus. Fifteen articles were retained from the literature search conducted between August and November 2016, and two researchers independently assessed their quality based on the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment guidelines. The results suggest that despite the healthcare system’s ongoing shift towards home-based rehabilitation, the role played by the physical environment of home settings is still considered a side finding. Moreover, the research appears to focus mainly on how this environment supports mobility and activities of daily living, whereas information regarding the psychosocial and emotional processes that mediate the interaction between stroke survivors and their home setting are missing. A lack of information was also found with regard to the influence of different geographic locations on the stroke rehabilitation process. Future investigations are therefore needed to advance the understanding of the role played by the physical environment of home settings in supporting stroke recovery.

Understanding hallmark event failure : A case study of a Swedish music festival

- PurposeHallmark events can be very beneficial for host communities, not least due to their potential in attracting tourists. The Peace & Love music festival was the hallmark event of the Swedish city Borlänge. In 2013, the event organization declared bankruptcy and canceled the forthcoming festival. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the factors that caused the failure of the 2013 Peace & Love festival.Design/methodology/approachThe case of the Peace & Love festival is analyzed using three data sources: interviews with the former members of the event organization; secondary data describing the Swedish festival industry; and festival visitors’ perspectives represented by comments on social media. An organizational ecology perspective frames the analysis.FindingsThe results of the study reveal that the failure of the event can be understood by a combination of three components: an organization in a vulnerable position, a strong new competitor entering the Swedish festival market, and uncertain visitors searching for the new place to be.Originality/valueVery few studies have researched event failure, although the subject is a recommended priority within the field of festival studies. This study presents a thorough examination of a hallmark event failure, which contributes to this area of knowledge and provides relevant information for organizations and host cities.

- In this article we analyze how the meaning and value of work can emerge, be defined and redefined in relation to the coming of retirement, by focusing individuals with dedicated work approaches interpreted as a calling. By relying on an existential sociology framework we analyze the retirement process as an existential imperative, e.g. life phases or processes where questions on meaning and life quality become prominent. For the interviewees, the day of retirement becomes a sort of a road sign that – depending on the distance of time to the point of retirement – has intensified existential questions and the meaning of work. The article explores the defining dimensions of a calling as found in the interviewees dedicated work approaches. We address the types of problems and opportunities that arise when the interviewees are soon to retire and their associated strategies: listening to a calling on ”standby”; learning not to listen to one’s calling, listening to a calling from a private sphere and project the calling’s commitment to other activities.

- När arbetsmiljö studeras i ett genusperspektiv talas i allmänhet i termer av kvinnors arbetsmiljö och förklaringar till ohälsa söks hos kvinnorna själva. Det talas sällan i termer av mäns arbetsmiljö. När det handlar om mansdominerade delar av arbetsmarknaden synliggörs istället arbetsvillkoren och ansträngningar görs för att förbättra dem. I detta bokkapitel argumenterar vi för att det är dags att sluta använda begreppet kvinnors arbetsmiljö. Arbetsmiljön är inte utformad efter kön och lösningarna hittas inte om analyser och åtgärder av arbetsmiljön baseras på särskiljande av kvinnor och män. Gör man det riskerar man att förklara arbetsmiljön med kön och riskerar att dölja att könsskillnader som syns i könsuppdelad statistik är konsekvenser av att arbetsmarknaden är segregerad och att det finns systematiska skillnader mellan typiskt kvinnliga och manliga verksamheter. För att synliggöra och förändra sådana könsskillnader i arbetsmiljön behövs ett fokus på de organisatoriska sammanhang som flertalet kvinnor och män finns i. Kapitlet handlar om hur arbetsmiljön kan förstås och studeras med ett genusperspektiv som tar fasta på den horisontella könssegregeringen och på hur de könssegregerade arbetsplatserna är organiserade.

- In the Samoan culture, chiefly titles are a form of oral history and cultural knowledge. In this paper, I interpret the term Samoan to be a title that has its own oral history and cultural knowledge. Those who call themselves Samoan belong to this history. However, Samoan is a title which is contested and (re)defined by contemporary Samoan cultural practitioners in immigration destination countries such as New Zealand. Examples are Victor Roger’s play My Name is Gary Cooper, Oscar Kightley and Simon Small’s play Fresh Off the Boat, and Tusi Tamasese’s film The Orator (O Le Tulafale). These works subvert the Western gaze upon the Samoan as the exotic and present a cultural mirror to Samoans to reveal how they view themselves. They form a larger discussion on a transnational or meta-Samoan culture and identity that is inclusive and that reflects the urban and cosmopolitan realities of Samoans whether they are in Samoa or abroad as seen in web networks such as the “Coconet”.
