  • Prohibiting Sex Purchasing and Ending Trafficking : The Swedish Prostitution Law
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Michigan Journal of International Law. - 1052-2867. ; 33:1, s. 133-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish prostitution law from 1999, now followed by Norway and Iceland, criminalized the purchaser and decriminalized the prostituted person. This is analyzed as a cogent state response under international trafficking law, particularly to the obligations set forth in the United Nation’s Trafficking Protocol from 2000. The Protocol states that a person is regarded a trafficking victim when, e.g., someone abuses her “position of vulnerability” in order to exploit her. International jurisprudence and social evidence strongly suggest that prostitution, as practiced in the world, usually satisfies this definition. Further, the Protocol urges states to reduce the demand for prostitution and to protect and assist victims, for instance by adopting laws deterring purchasers of sex, and by supporting those exploited in prostitution. Policy makers, such as the U.S. Department of State, are criticized for taking an inadequate position in face of the growing evidence from the Swedish law's impact. The article shows that Sweden has significantly reduced the occurrence of trafficking in Sweden compared to neighboring countries. It also scrutinizes some misinformation of the law's impact, showing for instance that claims alleging a more dangerous situation for those still in prostitution after 1999 were unfounded. In addition, the article addresses remaining obstacles to the law's effective implementation, arguing that in order to realize the law's full potential to support escape from trafficking, the civil rights of prostituted persons under current law should be strengthened to enable them to claim damages directly from the purchasers for the harm to which they have contributed, and for the violation of the prostituted persons' equality and dignity - a position now recognized by the government to some extent by clarifying amendments made in 2011.

  • Soft Power, World System Dynamics, and Democratization : A Bass Model of Democracy Diffusion 1800–2000
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: JASSS. - Surrey : JASSS. - 1460-7425. ; 14:(1) 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Political scientists seldom translate system terminology into systems analysis. This article uses Polity IV data to probe system dynamics for studies of the global diffusion of democracy from 1800 to 2000. By analogy with the Bass model of diffusion of innovations (1969), as translated into system dynamics by Sterman (2000), the dynamic explanation proposed focuses on transitions to democracy, soft power, and communication rates on a global level. The analysis suggests that the transition from democratic experiences (“the soft power of democracy”) can be estimated from the systems dynamics simulation of an extended Bass model. Soft power, fueled by the growth in communications worldwide, is today the major force behind the diffusion of democracy. Our findings indicate the applicability of system dynamics simulation tools for the analysis of political change over time in the world system of polities.

  • Understanding Power and Performing Resistance: Swedish Feminists, Civil Society Voices, Biopolitics and “Angry” Men
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 21:4, s. 264-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses feminist resistance in relation to different concepts of power. In particular, it analyzes current debates within Swedish feminism in order to understand what perceptions of power and resistance are being harboured within these discussions. Within the Swedish feminist debate it has been suggested that the equality debate must be radicalized, creating real change instead of policy reports and political party programmes. Others, however, have argued that we must not abandon equality politics for “conflict, struggle and revolt”. This debate is discussed from different theories of power and resistance and we argue that different forms of power become entangled with different forms of resistance, thus creating manifold and messy forms of resistance.

  • Women business ventures in Swedish university incubators
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1756-6266 .- 1756-6274. ; 5:1, s. 78-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Despite a growing interest in both women and university academic entrepreneurship, there are very few studies addressing women’s academic entrepreneurship. The authors address this gap by focusing on university incubators for women’s academic entrepreneurship. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze the significance of university incubators for the promotion and development of women’s academic business start-ups.Design/methodology/approach: The authors use a unique Swedish database for multivariate statistical tests on the performance of groups of women- and men-led ventures, as well as on groups of women incubatees. The database includes data for over 1,400 ventures, out of which 210 ventures are by women entrepreneurs.Findings: About 15 percent of the ventures in the incubators are started and managed by women entrepreneurs. Several significant differences were found between the groups, but the overall conclusion is that the Swedish incubators in this study do not show any evidence of being able to decrease the gender gap in the commercialization of university science.Originality/value: The study makes three important contributions. First, it applies a multilevel design that takes into consideration the relationship between individual firms and the incubator environment. Second, the authors conducted their analysis on women academic entrepreneurs who start their ventures in incubators, which means that the authors are concerned with a specific knowledge-intensive context, where men and women entrepreneurs possess fairly similar levels of human capital. Third, the unique database allows statistical analysis on a large data set, which provides research-based knowledge about the conditions for entrepreneurial career development among women in academic environments. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Verbal artistry in building a youth chat room community : leet speak, language play, and multilingual resources
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This talk discusses ways in which chat room participants in a Swedish youth chat room deploy leet speak and other hybrid language forms (including code switches, Swenglish, "Swedish Deutsch" and other multilingual resources).  The focus is on the ways in which such hybrid forms are deployed by the participants as part of their local formation of a net community. The detailed analyses draw on recordings of approximately 30 hours of chat room talk. The data document a rich use of invented spelling and various other hybrid forms, related to leet speak (e.g. switches between lower and upper case letters or numbers, as well as other types of creative spelling). Novel varieties of text compressions are other features of leet speak. But above all, code switching, as well as reduplications and capital letters are deployed as ways of accentuating (Bakhtin, 1981; Stanislavskij, 1986) various stances in conversations, for instance, when making assessments about style or performance or when commenting on technical issues (e.g. NEWbies’ for newcomers or inexperienced participants; ‘lagggggggggggggg’ for time 'lag'). The analyses focus on verbal artistry (Bauman & Briggs, 1990)and community building, and especially the ways that leet speak and other hybrid language varieties (e.g. crossings, Rampton, 1999; 2009) are deployed as ways of forming local alignments and disalignments. The chat room conversations show that the participants position themselves as central participants through this type of everyday poetics. This can be seen in ongoing conversations, as well as when participants enter or leave the forum. Greetings and leave takings are extended affairs where the participants revel in embellishing their language through novel varieties of crossings, code switches, creative spelling (e.g. ‘heiiii’ instead of Swedish ‘hej’ for ‘hi’) and other hybrid language forms. The hybrid constructions and verbal artistry can be seen as instances of creative improvisations (Duranti & Black, 2012) where participants align and disalign with each other through various accentuations of talk.
