  • Underdogs, rebels, and heroes : Crime narratives as a resource for doing masculinity in autobiographies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 57:3-4, s. 289-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article shows how autobiographies of famous, socially well-established men (re)produce hegemonic masculinity through narratives of offending; how masculine performance is age graded; and that masculinity constructions are accomplished both via what is said and what is not said. The autobiographies of the footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, the former high jumper Patrik Sjöberg and Sweden’s most famous criminologist, Professor Leif G.W. Persson, are analysed. Common to all three is that they openly describe a variety of crimes they have committed. These three men are highly respected in Sweden and none of them is considered as “a criminal” in general opinion. This article shows that crime can be a resource for doing masculinity even for famous, successful and highly respected men. The crime narratives in these autobiographies tell us something about the culturally accepted representations of masculinity that may not just pass as possible, but even as desirable.

  • Analysing the use of tools, initiatives, and approaches to promote sustainability in corporations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 27:2, s. 982-998
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interest in sustainability from the corporate sector is evidenced by over 13,000 companiesin 160 countries that have signed the United Nations Global Compact. In thiscontext, a number of tools, initiatives, and approaches (TIAs), e.g., circular economy, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, life cycle assessment, and sustainabilityreporting have been developed by and for corporations to engage and promote sustainabilitywithin their systems. Each of the TIAs has advantages when addressingsustainability issues and the company system's elements, but it has disadvantages indealing with their complexities and interactions. Relying only on one TIA results in alimited contribution to sustainability, whereas using too many TIAs wastes resourcesand energy. The Corporate and Industrial Voluntary Initiatives for Sustainability(CIVIS) has been proposed to better combine the TIAs. A survey was developed toinvestigate the use of 24 TIAs. The survey was sent to a database of 5,299 organisations(of which 3,603 were companies), from which 202 responses were obtained. The responses were analysed using ratio analysis, principal component analysis, andcluster analysis. The responses show that some TIAs are well known and providegood results when used, for example, corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability, and Global Reporting Initiative reports. The analyses show a number ofgroups of the TIAs that can help to better combine them. The paper updates theCIVIS framework in order to provide clearer guidance on how to combine the TIAs. Acombination of between four and six initiatives appears to be most effective way topromote sustainability. The TIAs can help to promote sustainability in corporations, but they need to be combined correctly in order to address holistically the fourdimensions of sustainability, the system elements, and stakeholders, while avoidingduplication of tasks and wasting resources.

  • Coping strategies among low-income families in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Social Work and Society. - : University of Wuppertal. - 1613-8953. ; 18:2, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From a global perspective, Sweden is a wealthy country with a high gross domestic product, comparatively low income inequality as measured by the Gini index, a good reputation for transparency, and low poverty rates. However, many people without an established position on the labour market benefit little from Sweden’s various forms of social insurance, since the amount of financial compensation one can receive when ill, unemployed, on parental leave, or retired relates to work requirements and previous income. This is one important reason why migrants from the Global South have low family incomes even in the Swedish welfare state and must rely on means-tested social assistance. This research considers what it means for families to live at a low economic standard, their experiences of contacts with the social services, and how they cope with low incomes. Social service clients were recruited from small and medium-sized towns in Sweden. Adults in eleven families of different origins, all long-term dependent on social assistance, were interviewed. The families’ efforts to handle their financial situation were interpreted as coping strategies. These strategies were divided into the subcategories action, adaptation, avoidance, and submission, with adaptation to social service demands being the most common strategy. Some migrant adults also expected to receive support from their own children when they grow older.

  • Diversity barometer : attitude changes in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Social Work Research. - : Routledge. - 2156-857X .- 2156-8588. ; 10:1, s. 21-38
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • he aim of this article is to elucidate and discuss the results of the 2016 Diversity Barometer (Mångfaldsbarometern) and compare these results with those obtained from ten years of the longitudinal Diversity Barometers for 2005?2014. An additional aim is to demonstrate whether and how Swedish people?s experiences of and attitudes toward people with a foreign background and ethnic diversity have changed.A random sample of the Swedish population took part in the annual study, which was carried out in the form of a nationwide postal survey. The results show that negative attitudes toward ethnic and cultural diversity in general, and migrant population in particular, have increased to some extent and with respect to certain issues. Views on diversity in relation to culture and religion ? especially Islam ? were more negative than views on diversity in relation to work. Those who have larger experience of contact with foreigners show a more positive attitude toward diversity compared with those with limited experience and contact. Individuals who have higher education, those who identify themselves as female, younger persons and those living in large cities are more positive than other groups. In our analysis of the empirical data, we proceeded from a social work perspective and applied contact theory and group conflict theories relating attitudes to group position.

  • Mapping the (mis)alignment of scientific output with the Agenda 2030: the case of the YUFE network
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable Development Goals have emerged as a global strategy to ensure a better and sustainable future for all, balancing the economic, social, and environmental development. These goals represent a long-term perspective that needs to be embedded in the decision-making of governments, businesses and society. Therefore, science, technology and innovation has been recognized as one of the main drivers for shifting to a sustainable path. However, its contribution to sustainable goals remains a complex and unresolved debate.  Therefore, the aim of this study is twofold. It aims to analyze the (mis)alignment of research in HEIS towards sustainable goals, as well as to analyze the interlinkage among the 17 goals. We examined the research papers from ten universities that compose the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Network. We analyzed 78,241 papers from the Web of Science during the period 2015-2019. We present a novel approach by using an open-source tool called OSDG, which combines an ontology-based approach from previous projects and then matches to the fields of study from Microsoft Academic. Sixty-eight percent of the papers were assigned to, at least, one goal. The findings reveal the increasing participation of the institutions of this network in this research. We find that the goals more frequently addressed are related to Health, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and Climate Change. We also compare this information with the targets and indicators on each goal to assess the similarity. These preliminary results can provide a better understanding of the research contribution to sustainable goals.

  • Applying a Systems Perspective on the Notion of the Smart City
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Smart Cities. - : MDPI AG. - 2624-6511. ; 3:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the need for a widened definition of the notion of technology within the smart city discourse, with a particular focus on the “built environment”. The first part of the paper describes how current tendencies in urban design and architecture are inclined to prioritize high tech-solutions at the expense of low-tech functionalities and omits that information and communication technology (ICT) contrasts the art of building cities as an adaptable and habitually smart technology in itself. It continues with an elaboration on the need for expanding the limits of system boundaries for a better understanding of the energy and material telecouplings that are linked to ICT solutions and account for some perils inherent in smart technologies, such as rebound effects and the difficulty of measuring the environmental impacts of ICT solutions on a city level. The second part of the paper highlights how low-tech technologies and nature-based solutions can make cities smarter, representing a new technology portfolio in national and international policies for safeguarding biodiversity and the delivery of a range of ecosystem services, promoting the necessary climate-change adaption that cities need to prioritize to confer resilience.

  • The smart city model : A new panacea for urban sustainability or unmanageable complexity?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environment and planning B. - : Sage. - 2399-8083 .- 2399-8091. ; 47:1, s. 179-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite several calls in this journal of debating the rapid growth of the literature on “smart cities”, such a debate has in large been absent. Smart cities are often un-critically launched as a sustainable way of developing cities. When cities become increasingly complex as its features are wired into the Internet, theories for their understanding is lagging behind. As it is prospected that a greater number of people and things will become connected by Information and Computer Technology, the complexity of urban systems will over time increase. Historical insights reveal that as complexity in societies increase, growth in energy consumption tends to follow. In this paper, we discuss whether complexity carried too far could lead to diminishing returns of energy saving and create unmanageable urban systems. As part of initiating such a debate, this commentary asks whether the smart cities development has a bearing on the issue whether a society can erode its capacity of sustaining itself? We pose this question against the backdrop that no one actually knows what type of society the smart cities model in the end will generate.

  • Analysing organisational collaboration practices for sustainability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The complex sustainability challenges that society faces require organisations to engage in collaborative partnerships. Stakeholders affect, and are affected by an organisation’s sustainability activities, making it an important element when deciding with whom to collaborate. A large number of studies have focussed on collaboration for sustainability, especially on vertical and dyadic partnerships and collaborative networks, while there is limited research on overarching collaboration activities from the perspective of individual organisations (for example, the Kyosei approach), and even less that includes a stakeholder perspective. The objective of this paper is to analyse with whom individual organisations collaborate and how stakeholders affecting and being affected by sustainability efforts are considered when choosing collaboration partners. A survey was sent to a database of 5216 organisations, from which 271 responses were received. The responses were analysed using non-parametric tests. The results show that organisations are engaged in collaboration activities for sustainability, collaborating mostly with two to three external stakeholders. However, the focus on collaboration for sustainability does not extend to a point that it would lead to a change of organisational practice nor do organisations necessarily consider how stakeholders affect and are affected by their efforts when choosing their collaboration partners. An update to the Kyosei process is proposed, in order to provide guidance on how to strengthen and extend collaborative partnerships for sustainability.

  • Carpoolers' perceived accessibility of carpooling
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 12:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to constitute a realistic option to existing travel modes, carpooling needs to be able to offer adequate levels of accessibility. Insights into how carpooling services affect perceived accessibility up until now remain unexplored. In this study we explore carpooling experiences of 122 users in Sweden and examine a number of possible determinants of the perceived accessibility of carpooling. Results show that carpooling is not perceived by the users as particularly accessible with low levels across the sample. Moreover, multiple linear hierarchical regression analyses show that simplicity of travel, population density, years of education, and school and work-trips appear to affect perceptions of accessibility of carpooling, whereas travel time and cost appear not to. The final model explains a third of the variance in perceived accessibility of carpooling, thus nearly two thirds of the variation is still unaccounted for. Future research should explore further possible determinants of perceived accessibility of carpooling in order to explain, understand, and counteract the low levels of accessibility that appear to be linked to this specific travel mode.
