  • Instagramming nature-based tourism experiences : a netnographic study of online photography and value creation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tourism Management Perspectives. - : Elsevier. - 2211-9736 .- 2211-9744. ; 34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research is to explore the role of online photography in creating experience value in nature-based tourism, and what types of experience value are conveyed through photography-based user-generated content. The paper draws from existing literature in defining tourism experience value as a subjective, inter-subjective and inter-contextual construct, performed by situated valuation practices. Consequently, the paper presents interpretive and participatory netnography as an effective method to investigate experience value, and identifies online photography on Instagram as both a valuing practice and a valuing place. Results show the capability of online photography-based UGC to create multidimensional values from strategic combinations of textual and visual content. Simultaneously, new dimensions of experience value are introduced, which exist beyond single tourism experiential encounters, but critically contribute to an iterative experience valuation. Finally, Instagram posts introduce valuation timelines that can elude linear models of pre/in-situ/post-experience valuation, and assume subjective and fluid connotations.

  • Liminality in nature-based tourism experiences as mediated through social media
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tourism Geographies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-6688 .- 1470-1340. ; 22:2, s. 413-432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intersection between social media, liminality and nature-based tourism experiences hasn't been the focus of previous tourism research. Such intersection, on the other hand, is illustrative of how social media relate to the constitution and performance of tourism spatialities, tourist identities, storytelling and place-making, and can lead to relevant theoretical contributes. We aim to investigate how liminality is expressed in relation to nature-based experiences by tourists on social media, and what role social media plays in mediating liminality during nature-based tourism experiences. The analysis is based on a participatory netnography of images and text posts, as well as online interviews with users of the popular social media Instagram. Findings show that the expression of tourism experiences in nature is closely related to specific notions of liminal otherness as opposed to the urban life and the everyday, where nature and wilderness are expressed as related to the genuine, the authentic and a true inner self. Creative combinations of pictures, captions and hashtags make it easier for tourists to express the contrast between the natural landscape and the everyday landscape once they returned home. These combinations also relate closely to performances of resistant and alternative selves and communities. At the same time, such performances are mediated and contested between freedom of self-expression, surveillance and social norms, an aspect that makes their liminal nature ambiguous.

  • Esplorare La Prospettiva Del “City Branding” Nel Unesco Creative Cities Network : Il Caso Di Studio Del Sottogruppo Della Gastronomia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: LaborEst. - : Università Mediterranea Reggio Calabria LaborEst - Laboratorio di Estimo e Valutazioni Economiche-Estimative. - 2421-3187. ; :20, s. 16-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing number of cities have joined creative city networks in the last decade. Through such networks, cities are attempting to transform their creative sectors and become more attractive in terms of tourism and skilled labour. This study investigated the UNESCO Creative City Network (UCCN), and more specifically, its sub-category of gastronomy. The study was of an exploratory character and aimed at contributing to research on city branding from a UCCN perspective. The methodological approach was qualitative and included interviews along with document reviews of official materials (e.g., websites) from member cities. Study results point towards several branding related benefits from UCCN membership such as (i) greater recognition, (ii) increased tourism, (iii) new investment along with the establishment of more creative businesses. Study participants also reported negative consequences such as increased levels of administration and bureaucracy associated with UCCN participation.

  • Journeys of research, emotions and belonging : an exploratory analysis of the motivations and experience of ancestral tourists
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 20:1, s. 85-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ancestral tourism and amateur genealogy are popular phenomena, driving members of diasporas to reconnect with their ancestral roots and discover family histories. Tourism researchers have not yet paid much attention to Scandinavian countries as ancestral destinations. After waves of emigration, there are now millions of individuals with Scandinavian roots in countries like the United States. We explore the demand-side of American ancestral tourism to Sweden. Our findings stem from nine interviews with Swedish-Americans who have been ancestral tourists in Sweden. Ancestral tourists live highly emotional experiences dependent on factors occurring prior to and during travels and involving many sites and stakeholders beyond the control of the destination. Our study reveals the importance for ancestral tourists of establishing a network of allies through genealogy research for their experience in Sweden to be positive. The accumulation of family memories and of information gained through genealogy research makes ancestral travels to Sweden a highly personal endeavor, rather than an elusive reconnection to a distant heritage. Yet reconnecting with the ancestral homeland and establishing a sense of belonging to its society also matters to these tourists, though cultural stereotypes influence this experience. We conclude with recommendations for destination development and future research.

  • Evaluating publicly supported periodic events : the design of credible, usable and effective evaluation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1940-7963 .- 1940-7971. ; 12:2, s. 152-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recognized increase in public-sector investment in events has led to a consequent requirement to clearly demonstrate a return on that investment. Commonly that return is seen as an economic one, but this ignores a range of other impacts. There is, therefore, a need to identify theoretically sound and practically relevant methods for evaluating publicly supported events. Also needed from those investing in the events is broad support for the method of evaluation and confidence in the validity of the results obtained. In order to support the development of event evaluation methods to satisfy this need, this case study research undertaken in Östersund, Sweden, identifies–in the context of publicly supported periodic events and festivals–what should be evaluated and how these events and festivals should be evaluated. The studies revealed that regardless of their different needs there was consensus amongst participant stakeholders regarding the criteria required for the evaluation.

  • Characteristics and Recidivism in Relation to Arrest : Differentiating Between Partner Violent Perpetrator Subtypes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Criminology. - : Routledge. - 2578-983X .- 2578-9821. ; 21:2, s. 203-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to describe and compare arrested and non-arrested male intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators, in terms of individual characteristics and variables related to the IPV incident, in a sample of 628 perpetrators reported to the Swedish police. We also explored recidivism rates in relation to arrest within the total sample, as well as among subtypes of partner violent men (i.e. generally violent [GV] and partner only [PO] violent). The perpetrators in this longitudinal study were reported to the police for male-to-female perpetrated IPV and subjected to a structured violencerisk assessment between 2011 and 2014. The results showed that arrested perpetrators were more likely to be reported for severe forms of IPV, being assessed by the police post-arrest with a higher risk for recidivism, and being more likely to be prosecuted for the reported IPV incident. There was also a significant interaction effect between subtypes and arrest for IPV recidivism within 12 months post-arrest. Among those perpetrators who were arrested, GV perpetrators were more than four times as likely as PO violent perpetrators to recidivate in IPV. The results of this study high-light the importance of differentiating between subtypes when examining the impact of sanctions on IPV recidivism
