The purpose of the workshop was to initiate an exchange of views over problems of interpretation. Two disciplinary perspectives were exchanged: one focusing on land, its uses and management, and the other one on people, their resources and lives.

- The guiding concept for the seminar was that of 'understanding'. The contributors to this report discuss various aspects of the understanding of hidden meanings and implicit messages, the acquisition of tacit knowledge in specific contexts as well as the role played in understanding by background knowledge and fundamental assumptions. One of the papers deals specifically with pictorial communication. Three papers are related to the acquisition, learning and teaching of seeond or foreign languages.

- This report contains eight papers presented at the interdisciplinaryseminar arranged by the Department of Communication Studies, University of Linköping, on 3-4 June, 1986.The papers deal in different ways with the problem of distributing knowledge or with methods of describing and improving individualcompetence and skills in communicative situations, especially in classroom interaction. Three of the papers are concerned with knowledge and competence as being mainly social and cultural phenomena - the social transmission of knowledge, educational drama as a means of improv ing social competence, and music reviews as exponents of certain cultural communities. One paper discusses instructions as one way of disseminating knowledge and competence. The last four contributions discuss different levels of knowledgeand competence in various educational settings, such as teacher and pupil interaction, and the ways in which different perspectives on language may cause misunderstandings and other communicative problems in language learning.

South-south relations in a changing world order

- The traditional division of labour in the world economy, with its clearest expressions during the colonial period, is gradually disappearing. The emerging world order exhibits as one of its most significant features, increasing economic and political contacts between countries situated in the South. This trend represents a challenge to the previously so dominant North-South relations. It therefore raises a number of important questions, particularly with regard to the future of the South. To examine and discuss the problem areas involved, the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies organized a seminar in May 1981 on "The Emergence of South-South Relations in a Changing World Order". The agenda of the seminar concentrated on two major issues: Do South-South relations contain possibilities for development in the South not found in the old international division of labour? Or do they simply possess the same exploitative characteristics as the classic North-South exchange, therefore creating a process of accelerating unequal development in the South? The present volume addresses itself to these important issues by focusing on two particularly interesting cases of expansionism in the South, the Brazilian penetration of West Africa and the Indian activities in Asia and Africa.
