    • In the high school mathematical compulsory text books published by the Beijing Normal University Press, the knowledge on the history of mathematics occurs in 22 places. Among which, about 63.64% is in the form of reading materials. The contents about history of mathematics are focused on the stories of mathematicians, famous mathematical problems and other materials relative to the history of mathematics, and they were mainly represented in text forms. There are two designing models for integrating the history of mathematics into mathematics teaching, that is, explicit integration and implicit integration. The former includes two ways, one is deriving the history of mathematics from mathematical knowledge and the other is deriving the mathematical knowledge from the history of mathematics.

    • Purpose – The rate of turnover of hospital managers has been high in Sweden. Hospitals are regarded to be difficult to manage, which is connected with different discourses and action logics such as politics, medicine, care and management creating complex conditions for hospital management. The purpose of this paper is to analyse hospital managers' management conditions in conjunction with hospital mergers. Design/methodology/approach – Two case studies concerning hospital mergers illustrate these management conditions by means of analysing how different actions are communicated by politicians, county council directors, and hospital managers. The author's own experiences as a hospital manager have been made use of, as have document studies. In the analysis, conducted with the support of several theoretical perspectives, certain themes emerge which touch upon these management conditions. Findings – In connection with hospital mergers, leading hospital actors carry out communicative games controlled by different action logics. No one wants to get stuck with the losing card. The article demonstrates the difficulties of implementing radical organizational changes in hospitals. A challenge for hospital managers lies in creating a shared dialogue and a consensus with the professions, the politicians and the media. The crucial position of power held by the politicians and the professions in critical situations has to be dealt with. Otherwise the hospital manager has to resign. Originality/value – The paper aims to clarify under which management conditions the hospital manager acts.

    • This paper primarily discusses strategies for the development of small and medium-sized cities and towns in Europe Union. The roles and potentials of small and medium-sized cities and towns are analyzed frstly. Then it primarily summarizes the growing concerns and related policies on medium-sized cities and towns in the following part, which refected the ambitions to integrate urban issues within the EU policy framework. Some of the major policy documents and programmes as well as related normative concepts of the EU policy framework are critically analyzed. The so-called‘urban dimension’is emerging in various strategies within the EU policy framework, whereas its specifc design and territorial focus, also in relation to small and medium-sized cities and towns, remains to be rather vague.

It will bring the readers unimaginable wisdom in education innovation.   (Text on the back cover)   Education pioneers who are dancing with “chains” all have this experience: it is very difficult to reform in the central area of education where traditional forces are strong and powerful, but when they consciously or unconsciously move away from the center to the “chaotic edge”, resistance greatly decreases. The “chaotic edge” is far away from the fierce competition in the “center”, but it is not a barren land without information input. Instead, it is an active area where stagnation and disorder are in frequent change. It is an area where complex systems can adjust and survive and where new ideas and creative practices can grow healthily and rapidly. However, to live on the edge of chaos means to give up all the benefits and profits in the central area and to choose to be marginalized. It also requires the educators to transcend classical view of science, of development, of education, and of methodology, and to get familiar with the epistemology, axiology, and methodology of living on the edge of chaos in complex education systems.
