  • Authority and Legitimacy : A Quantitative Study of Youth’s Perceptions on the Brazilian Police
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Police brutality, racial profiling, and discrimination in the criminal justice system. - Hershey PA, USA : IGI Global. - 9781522510888 - 9781522510895 ; , s. 151-213
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, the majority of research has focused on legitimacy, while much less attention has been given to the sources of trust in the police (Nix et al., 2014). Limited attention has been also paid to the examination of legitimacy of the police services as viewed by those they serve (Bottoms & Tankebe, 2013), especially by the young people. Hence, the current study aims to add to this body of research in three ways. First, it examines the factors that influence peoples' beliefs about the police and their intentions to cooperate or exhibit confidence. Second, this study constitutes one of the first empirical analyses that highlight the importance of examining the relationship between police authority and legitimacy in Brazil. Aiming to understand the dynamics among those notions in relation to trust and obedience, the empirical part of the present study is conducted in the district of Jardim Ângela (Sao Paolo); once considered as the most violent urban region in the world. The final contribution lies in its focus on early adolescence as the particular age forms a crucial period in peoples' legal socialization (Dirikx & Van den Bulck, 2014). The statistical analysis shows significant relationships between the frequency of obedience in laws and trust in the police, and dimensions of perceived legitimacy.

  • The ‘blue leviathan’ : Perceptions of youth on police violence and impunity in Argentina
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Police Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 0032-258X .- 1740-5599. ; 90:4, s. 318-347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been complaints against the Argentinian police for decades (CELS, 2013, 2015). The Argentinian police (either federal, national, prefectural or military) have been characterised as the ‘blue leviathan’ (Saín, 2008), being responsible for gross human rights violations and excessive violence committed against civilians. The present article focuses on youth, aiming to explore their perceptions regarding police violence and impunity based on past negative experiences in one of the most affected areas in the metropolitan region of Buenos Aires, the Mitre neighbourhood. The quantitative data gathered for this study furthers the discussion on institutional legitimacy and the mutual relationship between the development of confidence, obedience in law and procedural justice, in Argentina and beyond.

  • Increased Gun Violence Among Young Males in Sweden : a Descriptive National Survey and International Comparison
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0928-1371 .- 1572-9869. ; 25:4, s. 365-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This population-based time-trend study examines gun violence rates among males in Sweden during the years 1996 to 2015 and compares the rate in Sweden to other Western European countries. Data were collected from six registries and are presented descriptively per 100,000 inhabitants. The risks among males in Sweden increased considerably in both lethal and non-lethal gun victimization and perpetration. Among males aged 15 to 29 there was a five-fold increase in risk for victimization in lethal and non-lethal gun violence during the 20-year observation period. In a comparative perspective the rate of gun homicide victimization among males 15 to 29 years was higher in Sweden compared to other Western European countries, while the risk for males over age 30 was at an average level. Based on the results of this study we conclude that gun violence among young males in Sweden has been on the rise and is at a high level compared to other Western European countries. The development of gun violence in Sweden can be characterized as endemic, prevalent in both population and socially vulnerable areas.

  • International Humanitarian Law and Justice : Historical and Sociological Perspectives
  • 2018. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decade, there has been a turn to history in international humanitarian law and its accompanying fields. To examine this historization and to expand the current scope of scholarship, this book brings together scholars from various fields, including law, history, sociology, and international relations. Human rights law, international criminal law, and the law on the use of force are all explored across the text’s four main themes: historiographies of selected fields of international law; evolution of specific international humanitarian law rules in the context of legal gaps and fault lines; emotions as a factor in international law; and how actors can influence history. This work will enhance and broaden readers’ knowledge of the field and serve as an excellent starting point for further research.

  • Recidivism in Intimate Partner Violence Among Antisocial and Family-Only Perpetrators
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Criminal justice and behavior. - : SAGE Publications. - 0093-8548 .- 1552-3594. ; 44:11, s. 1477-1495
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to compare antisocial and family-only intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators in terms of IPV recidivism rates, type of recidivism crime, and time to recidivism. A total sample of 628 perpetrators was categorized as antisocial (n = 327) or family-only (n = 301) based on general criminality. Results demonstrated that antisocial perpetrators recidivated to a larger extent than family-only perpetrators (27.2% vs. 12.9%). Antisocial perpetrators were more prone to recidivate in both physical and nonphysical violence. Of the perpetrators who recidivated, the majority did so within the first year after their index crime. However, antisocial perpetrators recidivated more than family-only perpetrators after the first year. Key findings consisted of the subtypes’ differing propensity to reoffend and their different critical time periods for recidivism. These findings suggest the need for different risk management strategies depending on perpetrator subtype to prevent future violence.

  • The feminist origins of the Swedish Red Cross
  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: International Humanitarian Law and Justice. - London : Routledge. - 9781138477551 - 9781351104432 ; , s. 212-224
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter gives an overview of the developments that led to the formation of the Swedish branch of the Red Cross (or, as it was called at that time, “The voluntary society for the succour of wounded and sick on the battlefield”) between the spring of 1864 and the summer of 1865.  I will explain how the founding of the Swedish Red Cross became part of feminist strategy before I proceed to investigate the limits that religious doctrine at the time put to feminist action. The rest of the paper will show how the feminists activists grappled with these difficulties in a way that made their contribution less well known than it would otherwise have been.

  • Getting invasive species on the political agenda : agenda setting and policy formulation in the case of ash dieback in the UK
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Biological Invasions. - : Springer. - 1387-3547 .- 1573-1464. ; 19:7, s. 1953-1970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study reviews how the issue of ash dieback has been placed on the political agenda in the UK, a country where the disease has affected one of the largest national extents, thus representing a particularly severe case. Comparisons are made between how the scientific community framed the ash dieback threat and the resulting response strategy and how both the media and the British government framed the problem. Representing one example of media framing, the study analyses one British newspaper’s coverage of the disease and the response strategies (the Daily Telegraph). The analysis highlights a gap between the biologically rooted perspective and the perspective of policymakers, where policy must manoeuvre between disparate viewpoints and needs. Crucially, none of Pautasso et al.’s (Biol Conserv 158:37–49, 2013) five plant-science-based solutions were explicitly adopted by the British Government in their response strategy to ash dieback disease. The same is true of the biological control recommendations offered by Kirisits et al. (J Agric Ext Rural Dev 4(9):230–235, 2012). Instead, the government adopted a broader, more comprehensive approach than that recommended by plant scientists. The present analysis thus provides an example of a holistic perspective on the multiple competing factors that policymakers must navigate in their attempts to delineate action. It highlights instances in which proposed biological responses were rendered less applicable by a failure to understand the agenda-setting process and the policy-making arena. The present findings suggest that an improved understanding of the factors influencing agenda setting and policy action is essential to arriving at a more effective and integrated understanding of responses to biological threats.
