  • Building the green city from wood? : Policies, practices, and institutional capabilities in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Built Environment and Architecture as a Resource. - : Nordic Academic Press of Architectural Research. - 9789198379747 ; , s. 55-80
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ideas about green cities, good architecture and planning are often shared among professionals working in the field of urban planning and design during conferences, workshops, and meetings. But how is what is considered ‘good’ or ‘best’ in planning and policy decided? And where do we learn about good ideas, places to visit, and projects to be inspired by? Are there any potential risks or challenges inherent to following in the wake of the same ‘inspiring’ reference objects as everyone else—regardless of whether it is a city, a neighbourhood, or a building? This article makes the case for a policy mobilities perspective for understandinghow ideas about the green city are conceptualized, formulated, and mobilized in urban policy. Drawing on a growing body of literature in geography and urban studies, the article argues for the usefulness of adopting a policy mobilities perspective when working with(in) green city policy, also for scholars outside the field of geography. Using the case of multistorey housing in wood in Sweden, the article presents three different perspectives on how ideas about green cities are formulated and mobilized.

  • Culture and management control interdependence : An analysis of control choices that complement the delegation of authority in Western cultural regions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Organizations and Society. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0361-3682 .- 1873-6289.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the influence of cultural regions on the interdependence between delegation of authority and other management control (MC) practices. In particular, we assess whether one of the central contentions of agency theory, that incentive contracting and delegation are jointly determined, holds in different cultural regions. Drawing on prior literature, we hypothesise that the MC practices that operate as a complement to delegation vary depending on societal values and preferences, and that MC practices other than incentive contracting will complement delegation in firms in non-Anglo cultural regions. Using data collected from 584 strategic business units across three Western cultural regions (Anglo, Germanic, Nordic), our results show that the interdependence between delegation and incentive contracting is confined to Anglo firms. In the Nordic and Germanic regions, we find that strategic and action planning participation operate as a complement to delegation, while delegation is also complemented by manager selection in Nordic firms. Overall, our study demonstrates that cultural values and preferences significantly influence MC interdependence, and suggests that caution needs to be taken in making cross-cultural generalisations about the complementarity of MC practices.

  • Fridge stories and other tales from the kitchen : A methodological toolbox for getting closer to everyday food practices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Food, Culture, and Society. - : Routledge. - 1552-8014 .- 1751-7443. ; 23:5, s. 608-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a methodological toolbox as a useful research approach for investigating domestic food practices. Consumption research often relies strongly on interviews or surveys. While helpful, such methods inevitably create a distance between the verbalization of the studied practice and the practice itself, inviting post hoc rationalization. The toolbox helps the researcher to get closer to the studied practice by combining interviews with methods based on observation, visualization and verbalization, in or close to practice. The toolbox holds a variety of methods and we describe fridge stories, food mapping, shop-alongs and food diaries. Through a practical discussion of the advantages and difficulties of these methods, and their combined use, we hope our paper can be useful to other researchers and students interested in everyday food practices.

  • Peace Parks : Nation Branding and Soft Power in Costa Rica
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Ecolaboratory. - : University of Arizona Press. - 9780816540112
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we first discuss how political ecology can provide an important and critical lens to understanding nation branding. The following chapter first traces the origins of what we refer to as the “Blue (peaceful)— Green (environmental)” nation-branding project in Costa Rica. We then analyse the historical events that have come to shape such an identity. Finally, we reflect upon the expansion of the nation-branding project through the establishment of the Si-A-Paz Peace Park. This analysis is based on four months of field research carried out in Si-A-Paz in 2011 and 2012, complemented with more recent secondary sources.

  • Lift the class - not the place! On class, urban policies in Oslo
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0435-3684 .- 1468-0467. ; 102:2, s. 135-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban studies are still troubled by Friedrich Engels’ argument from 1872: that the bourgeoisie’s only method to solving housing problems is to shift them elsewhere. Through analysing urban policies in Oslo, Norway, this paper demonstrates that the almost 150-year-old argument is still relevant. This cannot be confronted without a better understanding of class as a complex and constituting process in relation to urban policy. In this paper class will be analyzed through three clusters of causal relations: (i) a stratification approach, (ii) an opportunity hoarding approach (related to Weber), and (iii) domination and exploitation (a Marxian approach). Urban polices in Oslo is to a large extent consistent with a stratification approach – i.e. both individuals and places can become ‘richer’ and ‘improve’ without other individuals or places losing anything – and to some degree with a Weberian approach – the municipality wants to include local residents in education and labour markets. In order to confront the ‘bourgeoisie method’, we need to open the door to the third approach and discuss class in relation to the broader political economy. Rather than an area-programme with the aim of ‘lifting the place’, what is needed is class-programmes that aim at ‘lifting the class’.

  • On Spatial Planning and Marxism : Looking Back, Going Forward
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Antipode. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0066-4812 .- 1467-8330. ; 52:3, s. 800-824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The renewed interest in Marxism that occurred in social sciences and humanities after the 2008 economic crisis has not yet found its counterpart in spatial planning. This paper examines what Marxist planning theory and practices could mean in the current conjuncture. It does so through scrutinising (1) the vibrant Marxist discourse in planning that existed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, (2) the recent history (since the 1980s) of planning theory and its relation to the political economy, and (3) the current political economic context (not least defined by the diabolic crisis). Where previous Marxist approaches to planning were very strong on analysing the political economy, I argue there is currently a need—with old hegemonies losing ground, communicative approaches losing support, and neoliberalism in the political economy losing legitimacy—to also discuss establishing alternatives.

  • The 'Middle Class' Does Not Exist : A Critique of Gentrification Research
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The middle class is a key word in gentrification research, it is used extensively, and it is often part of the very definition of gentrification. But it is also used highly differently. This Intervention argues that the best way to grasp the middle class in the gentrification literature is synonymous with “anyone moving into a so-called gentrified area”, i.e. “newcomers” or “gentrifiers”. This, however, is not a proper definition of a social class. This Intervention also suggests that the capitalist class should rather be understood as the actual gentrifiers, but such an approach is incompatible with the existing gentrification discourse.

  • Economic development and place attractiveness : The case of Karlskoga in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Siirtolaisuus-Migration. - Turku : Migration Institute of Finland. - 0355-3779 .- 1799-6406. ; 46:1, s. 21-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this short paper we introduce a research project currently underway exploring the industrial development, and accompanying socio-economic changes, in an industrial town in Sweden: Karlskoga. Here we consider specifically the confluence of factors and issues around economic development on the one hand, and population and migration on the other hand. We illustrate, through the Karlskoga case of a town that has experienced profound ups and downs both in its economic trajectory but also in accompanying population and migration trends, the importance of considering these two elements in harmony. We posit that to undertake sustainable economic development in the future, old industrial towns such as Karlskoga need to centre their efforts around quality of life and place attractiveness, and not only think of industrial development in a narrow sense. This is an introductory work relating to a project which is ongoing.
