  • Transboundary research collaborations : An evaluation against 11 principles of transboundary research
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: MiReKoc – 15th Anniversary Conference on Migration and Development in the ‘Global South’: “Research Challenges and Implications”, Migration Research Center at Koç University, 24–25 October 2019, Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is widely acknowledged that transboundary research collaborations are critical in supporting evidence-based actions to address global issues, such as sustainable development. Normally taking the form of universities or research institutions from the North and South working together, collaborations study a particular set of issues through a variety of activities through which both research partners pool their resources, share and co-create knowledge. This presentation focuses on one such example of a transboundary collaboration, the Sweden-Kenya Interactive Learning Lab (SKILLs), a collaboration between Gothenburg, Sweden, and Kisumu, Kenya, facilitated by Mistra Urban Futures. Starting as an exchange of PhD students between the two platforms in 2012, SKILLs has now developed into a collaboration programme with the overall aim of contributing to sustainable urban development in the two contexts. A mass of theoretical literature exists about how transboundary collaborations should be organised, how academics and practitioners might behave in its facilitation and how could be better facilitate. However, there is a lack of empirics which detail how transboundary collaborations are organised, how academics and PR actioners do behave and how activities are facilitated. Our evaluation seeks to address this gap through the evaluation of the SKILLs platform against the Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries’ (KFPE) 11 principles for transboundary research collaborations. The evaluation takes the form of semi-structured interviews with pervious and current platform managers, as well as key participants, including researchers and PhD students, in both contexts, with interviewees being asked to score the SKILLs platform against the 11 said principles. The evaluation is expected to add to the limited existing empirical knowledge about how the process of transboundary is enacted, and provide a point of consideration for the structural asymmetries, unspoken assumptions and operational constraints that can affect what is deemed successful within transboundary collaborations.

  • Research on degraded and restituted towns: Overview and state-of-the-art : Miasta zdegradowane i restytuowane. Istota problemu i zakres badań
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Krzysztofik, R., & Dymitrow, M. (Eds.): Degraded and restituted towns in Poland: Origins, development, problems / Miasta zdegradowane i restytuowane w Polsce. Geneza, rozwój, problemy. - Göteborg : University of Gothenburg. - 9186472763
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both current and historical settlement forms experience evolutionary, permanent changes to their spatial and socio-economic attributes, not seldom accompanied by dynamic functional transformations. The linkage between functionalism and dynamism, in turn, is one of those elements of conventional geographical theory used to explain the phenomena of urbanization and urbification. While urbanization refers to a broader process of gradual increase in the proportion of people living in ‘urban areas’ as well as ways in which the society adapts to the encountered changes, urbification denotes the strict process of designating ‘urban areas’ by means of formalized mechanisms. At the intersection of these two concepts – urbanization and urbification – lies the fascinating problem of degraded and restituted towns. Degraded and restituted towns have an established niche in science. In Poland, due to the impressive number of degraded (830) and restituted (240) towns, that niche is particularly developed. However, the role of degraded and restituted towns has been thought to pertain to merely two openings: treating them as distinctive elements within (national) settlements systems, or as specific material containers of immaterial values, with both camps emphasizing the role of spatio-temporal changeability. To this background, two basic needs have been identified: firstly, the need to present the multiaspectuality of the undertaken research problem, and, secondly – largely resulting from the former – the need to summarize existing academic works on degraded and restituted towns into a more nuanced yet coherent whole. Hitherto, these works have been sprawling across numerous disciplines with little mutual reinforcement in regard to latest research achievements, which could potentially develop the subject into a theoretically more robust subdiscipline. In this chapter, we have identified a number of research perspectives on the phenomenon of degraded and restituted towns, both well-established and nascent, summarizing them into 12 main currents. Moreover, this introductory chapter provides ample context to the deliberated topic, including a historical synopsis, a review of current practices, a discussion on conceptual and terminological ambiguities, as well as a kaleidoscope of more individualized tidbits and oddities. An extensive literature list finalizes this chapter.

  • The Balaton Ecomuseum – A Case Study on Heritage Tourism and Stakeholder Management
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: TOURMAN 2019 Conference Proceedings. “Tourism, travel & hospitality at crossroads: The way ahead”, Thessaloniki, Greece, 24-27 October 2019. - Thessaloniki. - 9786188044067
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many ecomuseums are established around one certain activity, cultural tradition or use of specified natural resources. The planned Balaton Ecomuseum is complex, aiming at integrating a number of different perspectives and stakeholder interests, to promote sustainable tourism. Therefore, the “material” and intangible heritage cannot be treated as strictly separate entities, since the intangible heritage includes the artistic value of the built heritage, historic gardens and parks and the expertise of their conservation and restoration; and traditional trades and crafts. This ecomuseum shall embrace all elements of cultural landscapes, enhancing the visitors’ experience of the landscape in all its dimensions.

  • The diversity and spatiality of rural livelihoods in southern Sri Lanka: Access, poverty, and local perceptions
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift - Norwegian Journal of Geography. - 0029-1951. ; 66:2, s. 63-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a consequence of the increasingly multi-local and diversified nature of rural livelihoods, the production of wealth and poverty in the Global South is gradually delinked from local and agrarian resources. In order to understand what affects successful participation in non-farm livelihood activities, it is important, but surprisingly often neglected to incorporate local perceptions of change and of what factors affect the accessibility of key livelihood assets. Based on a guided questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, the article provides both a detailed account of the diversity and spatiality of livelihoods in two villages in southern Sri Lanka and an analysis of the factors affecting differentiated access to non-farm livelihood activities. One key finding is that the categories ‘farm’ and ‘non-farm’ are too general for a grounded evaluation of poverty-reducing livelihood activities, which casts some doubt on more optimistic findings based on large-scale survey data. Poor households participate in both farm and non-farm activities, illustrating a deep segmentation of the non-farm sector. Lack of social assets (e.g. networks and connections) was identified as most crucial for access to lucrative non-farm segments, since it also affected access to other assets.

  • Learning Benefits of Using 2D Versus 3D Maps: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Experiment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of geography. - New York : Informa UK Limited. - 0022-1341 .- 1752-6868. ; 112:3, s. 87-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The traditional important role of maps used for educational purposes has gained further potential with recent advances in GIS technology. But beyond specific courses in cartography this potential seems little realized in geography teaching. This article investigates the extent to which any learning benefits may be derived from the use of such technologies. A controlled experiment was conducted to examine whether information recall is improved when cartographic information on population distribution is presented in 2D versus 3D form. The results show statistically significant differences in learning benefits between the two formats, largely in favor of 2D representation. These findings suggest that learning benefits can be derived from paying greater attention to map format in educational settings.

  • Seeing like a standard: EU, sustainable biofuels, and land use change in Africa
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACME: An International E-Journal for Critical Geographies. - 1492-9732. ; 17:1, s. 49-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biofuels have expanded across the globe, generating a range of concerns in the places of production. One approach to controlling the effects of biofuel production has been sustainability standards. This article takes a 'seeing like' approach to analyse how the EU Sustainability standard contributes to narrowing the vision of what sustainable biofuels are. Six biofuel cases in Africa are examined through the lens of the standard, using remote sensing to investigate the criteria on land use and canopy cover change. The standard view is also compared to on ground views regarding the sustainability of the projects. The effects of seeing like the EU standard are two: 1) diluted seeing, which prioritises global environmental problems over more nuanced social and institutional aspects; and 2) distributed seeing, which transforms standardised sustainable biofuels into multiple, uncertain forms because of hybrid governance. High carbon losses due to biofuel projects were detected, but at the same time, the standard simplifies and skips over wider problems related to unsustainable biofuel projects.

  • How to write a REF impact case study? Critical discourse analysis of evidencing practices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: “Making an impact: Creative constructive conversations” International Conference, 19-22 July 2016, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper applies critical discourse analysis to scrutinize submissions to the “REF [Research Excellence Framework] 2014 Impact Case Study” platform. More specifically, it focuses on the rhetorical practices used within these submissions to evidence research impact as outlined by the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) within tourism studies. The evidencing practices used within the submissions to Panel 26 (Sport Science, Leisure and Tourism) included quantitative sources and measures (e.g. Google Scholar, citation counts, journal ranking scores, monetary value of research grants, value of policy investment, industry revenue figures, etc.) and implicated ‘high status’-end users (e.g. government bodies, the UN, industry, NGOs) as their main type of evidence. The evidencing of impact did not differ depending on whether the research was of quantitative or qualitative character, neither on the type of research impact claimed. Instead, the disciplining of the epistemic evidencing practices was enforced by the outlined guidelines for submission (verifiable evidence, word count, type of impact). Leaning on Collins and Evans’ (2007) notion of ‘expertise’ used to conceptualize evidencing practices, this paper discusses the implication of such evidencing for an evaluation practice that sets out to assess the quality of research impact. The rhetoric such evidencing evokes, however, is not necessary indicative of the impact claimed. Furthermore, the evidencing practices used within the REF marginalize so-called negative impacts (failures), despite their specific value for research and, consequently, for societal progress at large.
