  • LIGHT TOPOGRAPHY and SPACIOUSNESS in the URBAN ENVIRONMENT
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordisk arkitekturforskning. - : sintef akademisk forlag. - 1893-5281 .- 1102-5824. ; 33:1, s. 103-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spaces can be perceived as larger or smaller, according to how lighting affects the spatial boundaries. This is knowledge that can be used for changing the appearance of a desolate square or a cramped space. The following is a full-scale study of changing light scenarios that was conducted with 222 respondents in an urban space over five weeks. The study examines the effect of the spatial distribution of light and the placement of luminaires on our spatial understanding. A mixed methodology strategy, which combines pair-wise comparisons with qualitative interviews and a questionnaire, was used to examine the respondents’ perception of differences in spatial size and shape. The findings show that illuminated surfaces and objects, such as facades and trees, create a perception of increased or decreased depth, height and distance, depending on the spatial context and the respondent’s pre-understanding. Additionally, the perceived size of space was found to follow the height of the luminaires’ placement. This research study raises awareness of the impact of the placement of luminaires at varied heights, by developing the concept of light topography.

  • Continuous Landscapes in Finite Space : Making Sense of Satellite Images in Social Science
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Questions of landscape values connected to agriculture and environment are always related to local land use. In order to study land use it is necessary to understand the intentions of the users as well as the conditions for land use in a specific landscape. This requires an understanding of the inherent spatial properties of the landscape, both as a social phenomenon and as concrete, material reality. The overall aim of this thesis is to combine local understandings of land use with satellite images. A model for social interpretation of landuse and landscape characteristics is developed. In an ethnographic study in the village Sötåsa is shown how land use is informed by different ideals. The inhabitants of Sötåsa continue to value the landscape characteristics of traditional farming. The thesis shows also that by perceiving satellite images as social images that hold both physical information and social signs it is possible to interpret physical information in terms of social landuse effects in local landscapes. This is made possible by new methods for describing and analysing qualities and characteristics of the cultivated landscape. Treating landscape in society is discussed in relation to the divide between social and natural sciences. The presented ethnographic approach combined with a study of satellite images provides a springboard for a renewed analysis of both land use and landscape. It also makes it possible to bridge the gap between social and natural science. The overall conclusion of the thesis is that it is possible to use satellite images in social science, but that it presupposes that the images are analysed with a perception of space in which the analysis handles multiple continuous spaces and where landscape is understood as socially finite.

  • Keeping agriculture alive next to the city – The functions of the land tenure regime nearby Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Land use policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-8377 .- 1873-5754. ; 78, s. 447-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustaining food production close to cities is not easy, as farming is often much less profitable compared to other activities in such locations, and it is at the frontier of resisting the pressures from urbanization and globalization. This study looks into an underexplored issue in peri-urban agriculture research – the role that land lease can play for preserving peri-urban agriculture. Leasing has increasingly become a common praxis in the Western industrialized world and it is a very necessary means for accessing limited farmland especially in peri-urban areas. Focusing on farms near Gothenburg, this study explores how the spatial structure of leasing brings opportunities as well as constraints to the change and continuation of farming in this peri-urban area. The investigation is guided by social, spatial and functional conceptualizations of land tenure, which 1) consider land tenure as a social relation, 2) are centered on functional constraints for agricultural production, and 3) highlight the spatial effects. Based on a combination of map interpretations, statistical analysis and interview analysis, the results show a strong and spatially structured pattern of production, farm and land use changes. Agriculture shows mainly to be driven by the landowner’s leasing strategies but is also shaped by the interplays between the landowner and the leasehold farmers. Existing food production farms have been able to rely on adding land from side lease for development even though the increase of small horse farms, holding whole-farm leases, makes it hard for new food production farms to start up. Policymakers are recommended to strategically use long-term leases as a policy instrument on municipal land at the peri-urban location, to incentivize food production farmers as well as to reduce land management costs.

  • Landscape care paradoxes: Swedish landscape care arrangements in a European context
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Geoforum. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-7185 .- 1872-9398. ; 43:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary European agriculture has a number of additional aims beside of food production, such as safeguarding environmental services and conservation values. Substantial efforts at official levels are aimed towards sustainable development but also towards maintaining values of what may be termed van- ishing landscapes. Selected areas and landscape features are set aside for protection or restoration. Indi- vidual efforts of this type have a long history in Sweden, and the issue has recently received increased attention, primarily due to more ambitious government goals concerning biodiversity conservation and Sweden’s ratification of the European Landscape Convention. This has resulted in an increased scientific and official interest in vanishing values in the rural landscape, where parts of Eastern Europe, such as the Maramures district in Romania, have been used as model examples of land use regimes which in the past was common in Sweden. In this context, the dilemma of romanticizing peasants’ use of land is highlighted and discussed more than has hitherto been done. This paper sheds light on some paradoxes inherent in official policies in relation to land use practices concerning the management of rural land- scapes in Sweden, and relates the Swedish situation to a contrasting example of landscape practice in Romania. We discuss the concept of landscape care in relation to the construction and perception of land- scape values and valuable landscapes through the lenses of rural realities and official policies. When Swed- ish authorities engage in the promotion of landscape care, they tend to work with slices of land, specific predefined values and individual farmers, and they often disregard the need to treat the landscape as a socio-ecological complex dynamic in space and time. We discuss how environmental policy generally could be improved through the adoption of a more inclusive and flexible approach towards aiding the dif- ferent aims inherent in multifunctional rural landscapes.

  • Local spatial context measurements used to explore the relationship between land cover and land use functions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation. - : Elsevier BV. - 1569-8432 .- 1872-826X .- 0303-2434. ; 23, s. 234-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research making use of satellite data for land change science has developed in the last decades. However, analysis of land use has not developed with the same speed as development of new satellite sensors and available land cover data. Improvement of land use analysis is possible, but more advanced methods are needed which make it possible to link image data to analysis of land use functions. To make this linking possible, variable which affect farmer's long term decisions must be taken into account in analysis as well as the relative importance of the landscape itself. A GIS-based tool for the measurement of local spatial context in satellite data is presented in this paper and used to explore the relationship between land covers present in satellite data and land use represented in official databases. By the use of the developed tool, a land configuration image (LCI) over the Siljan area in northern Sweden was produced and used for analysis. The results are twofold. First, the produced LCI holds new information about variables that are relevant for the interpretation of land use. Second, the comparison with statistics of agricultural production shows that production in the study area varies depending on the relative land configuration. Villages consisting of relatively large-scale arable fields and less diverse landscape are less diverse in production than villages which consist of smaller-scale and more heterogonous landscapes. The result is especially relevant for land use studies and policymakers working on environmental and agricultural policies. We conclude that local spatial context is an endogenous variable in the relation between landscape configuration and agricultural land use.
