  • Nursing students' experiences of assessment by the Swedish National Clinical Final Examination
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - : CHURCHILL LIVINGSTONE. - 0260-6917 .- 1532-2793. ; 33:5, s. 536-540
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish National Clinical Final Examination (NCFE) was established in 2007 in order to examine nursing students' clinical competence upon completing their Bachelor's degree in nursing. The NCFE constitutes an innovative method of examination, divided into two parts: a written and bedside test. The aim of this study was to evaluate nursing students' experiences of being assessed by means of the NCFE, in order to obtain information that could be used to improve the examination. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire with open-ended questions concerning the written and the bedside part of the NCFE. The answers from 577 third-year nursing students were analysed using content analysis. The nursing students regarded the NCFE as promoting further learning and as an important means of quality assurance. Its comprehensive nature was perceived to tie the education together and contributed to the students' awareness of their own clinical competence. The strengths of the NCFE especially highlighted were its high degree of objectivity and the fact that it took place in a natural setting. However, the students felt that the NCFE did not cover the entire nursing programme and that it caused stress. It thus appears to be important to reconsider the written theoretical part of the examination and to standardise the bedside part. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Performativity as pretence : A study of testing practices in a compulsory school in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 7:3, s. 297-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our aim in this paper is to analyse the impact of the standardised test on classroom practices in grade 5 in a compulsory school in western Sweden. In our analysis, the use of the concept of pedagogic device provides a framework for understanding hos high-stakes, standardised testing regulates classroom discourse and teachers' and students' classroom behaviours. The study was conducted during 2006-2007 as part of a larger ethnographic inquiry. The results reveal how the demands of the test impact upon the daily work in the classroom. In the neo-liberal apporach to governance, stnadardised tests have become an important measure of quality. School practices run the risk of being viewed as valuable, only relative to the performance of teachers and students at the individueal level. This view shifts the focus from a discussion about a societal responsibility to ensure that all children have equitable access to education, to a debate centred on the individualäs responsibility to perform. The analysis reveals that the test was not carried out as intended. However, both teacher and the students respond to the test situation and the results as if it had been and as if the test really mattered.

  • Globalization and classroom practice : insights on learning about the world in Swedish and Australian schools
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; :1, s. 104-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globalization and global education implies changes to practices at the classroom level to adapt to new imperatives associated with technology use and awareness, and environmental sustainability. It also implies much more. It implies that teachers apply their classroom pedagogy to take account of students’ new found global understandings of which they, and the school community, is largely unaware. This article addresses and discuses three key consequences of globalization for classrooms worldwide; an increased diversity of experience of the students within the classroom, an increased competitiveness of educational outcomes between national states and subsequently some standardisation of curriculum across nations to enable this, and an increased emphasis on teaching skills and values associated with intercultural understanding. Young children’s map knowledge and their resultant, and associated, interpretations of the world from a comparative study a from Swedish and Australian primary classrooms is used as examples of some of these implications of the impact of ‘global culture’ and ‘global issues’ on current and future classroom practice.

  • Technological literacy reconsidered: a model for enactment
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology and Design Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0957-7572 .- 1573-1804. ; 21:2, s. 137-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a model to describe technological literacy as enacted by indiviudals in the course of shaping their lives and the world around them. The model has two interrelated facets—the potential for and enactment of technological literacy—where enactment and potential mutually constitute each other. This potential is made up of knowledge of a particular situation, personal engagement with a situation, and social engagement in the world. Enactment requires a particular set of competencies in action, which together helps shape the situation: recognizing needs; articulating problems; contributing towards the technological process; and analysing consequences. The implications of this model for technological literacy in the context of the individual and society, and the role of technology education in developing technological literacy, are discussed.

  • A variation theory approach to teaching calendar time in Swedish preschool
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Literacy Information and Computer Education Journal. - : Infonomics Society. - 2040-2589. ; 4:4, s. 1144-1152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish preschool has implemented a revised curriculum since the year 2011. The revision brings a stronger focus on literacy, mathematics and natural sciences as pedagogical content in early years’ education, giving the preschool teachers an extended responsibility for children’s early education. Yet, the curriculum and tradition in preschool highly values children’s interests and flow of ideas, thematic work and play as part of early childhood education. The consolidation of children’s perspectives, play and goal-oriented learning in pedagogical practices is the main purpose in early childhood education, according to the national guidelines. The Swedish preschool teacher is thus standing before great pedagogical challenges where their pedagogical content knowledge is put to the test. This issue has been addressed in a developmental empirical project which results are presented in this paper. The purpose is to analyze a designed teaching act in Swedish preschool, to discuss the possibilities for challenging children’s conception of calendar time through the pedagogical frames of Variation theory of learning. The discussion extends our knowledge of this particular content in early childhood education and highlights the opportunities to stimulate learning, through a theoretical analysis of both the children’s conceptual knowledge and their response to the teaching act related to this content.

  • Engaging children’s participation in and around a new music technology through playful framing
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Early Years Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0966-9760 .- 1469-8463. ; 21:4, s. 325-335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns children’s engagement and participation in a musical dialogue, with the adult taking the role of the more-experienced participant and frames the activity as a musical play activity (in both senses of the word ‘play’). It presents an analysis of empirical data from a session with two six-year-old children interacting with and around a new music technology in a Swedish preschool setting and explores what participating in these practices implies for the children’s learning. The results indicate that the communicatively established framing made it possible for the children (i.e. provided scaffolding for them) to participate actively in a joint playful music-making activity. The communicative framing provided by the adult who took the role of a more-experienced participant played a vital part in providing musical experiences, not only in guiding the children to explore the system but also in introducing mediating tools as a way of discerning musical aspects.
