  • A leveza de andar : o desenvolvimento de políticas urbanas voltadas para os pedestres em Copenhague, Dinamarca (1960-2015)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Fronteiras: Revista de História. - Grande Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil : Editora da UFGD. - 2175-0742. ; 17:30, s. 209-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firstly, an introduction to carfree urban planning is presented in the article, together with a summary of the main advantages with carfree streets for people and the environment. The article analyses the transformation of the Copenhagen city centre through the gradual implementation of pedestrian, carfree streets during the years between 1960 up to now. Based on material from the Copenhagen Municipal Archive among other sources, we follow the controversies and municipal decisions on urban planning and policy that mark each decade. Additionally, the change in activity pattern and how the different types of uses of the pedestrian space are evolving during the historical time frame are studied. Finally, conclusions are made on what can be learnt from the example of Copenhagen in future transformations for other cities.

  • Além da escada da participação : Ferramentas analíticas para a análise crítica dos processos midiáticos participativos
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mídia e Cotidiano, Revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Mídia e Cotidiano. - : Pro Reitoria de Pesquisa, Pos Graduacao e Inovacao - UFF. - 2178-602X. ; 12:3, s. 245-274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Participatory research is facing three challenges—how to deal with the theoretisation and conceptualisation of participation; how to support the research with analytical models; and how the evaluate the research outcomes. This article aims to address these three problems by distinguishing two main approaches (a sociological and a political) in participatory theory and developing a four-level and 12-step analytical model that functions within the political approach. In this analytical model, a series of key concepts are used: process, field, actor, decision-making moment and power. The normative-evaluative problem is addressed by reverting to the critical perspective to evaluate the societal desirability of particular participatory intensities. This critical perspective—potentially—adds a 13th and final normative layer to the analytical model.

  • Comunicando o conhecimento acadêmico além do texto acadêmico escrito : uma análise autoetnográfica do experimento da instalação Mirror Palace of Democracy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: MATRIZes. - 1982-2073 .- 1982-8160. ; 14:2, s. 75-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article first discusses five approaches that aim to transcend, complement, or overturn the hegemony of the written academic text. In the second part, the Mirror Palace of Democracy installation experiment, which had the explicit objective of moving beyond the written academic text while still remaining in the realm of academic knowledge communication, is autoethnographically analyzed. The experiment allowed reflection on the integrated and iterative nature of academic communication, on the hybrid academic– artistic identity, and on the diversification of publics. Both the theoretical discussion and the Mirror Palace of Democracy installation are part of a call for more experimentation with, and theorization of, multimodal and/or arts-based academic communication.

  • A História dual da Securitização
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Segurança, Liberdade e Política. - Lisboa : Imprensa de Ciências Sociais. - 9789726713456 ; , s. 15-32
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter ‘A história dual da securitização’ provides a dual historisation of ‘securitisation’, i.e. of the origins of the Copenhagen School in terms of its direct world historical context and of the historical origins of the specific bias in our political discourse which is prompted by security discourses. Born almost as a rationalisation of German Ostpolitik, and hence with desecuritisation, the Copenhagen School understood the speech act less as a kind of conspiratorial or elite manipulation than as the manifold processes that give prominence to the discourse of security (the reversal of Clausewitz) in public debate or diminish it, as in the processes of desecuritisation. This means that I see ‘securitisation’ not in the ‘act’ of those ‘speaking’ security, but in the possibly unintended and unconscious de-/mobilisation of the inherent logic, or grammar, of the discourse of security. This begs the question, however, of where the discourse of security would have gained its inherent logic from. It is here where a second necessary historicisation has to take place, not about the context of the theory itself, but about the content of its central concept. The Copenhagen School has been criticised for being basically still too conventional or realist in its reading of security, being connected to exceptional measures, done by foreign-policy elites, etc. But just as the increasing number of security sectors indicates, this is not to be understood as the ‘essence’ of security, but rather as the effect of a historical development in which certain actors have traditionally come to be authorised to talk and effect war and peace in a ‘realist’ way. This implies that, by reifying a historical moment into a general framework of analysis, securitisation theory may indeed help to reproduce such an understanding, although it does not need to.  In return, it implies, however, that if a different understanding of security (beyond the raison d’État) appears and becomes shared, the Copenhagen School will also have to adapt. Its conceptualisation is historically bound.
