Carto(bio)graphic explorations of a small town - Walking and talking the in/exclusive city with new Swedes

• In EU funded research project we are working to develop a model for how to integrate different aspects of sustainability in relation to housing and buildings in concrete projects and in order to do that we have tried to explore how to, from different angles, understand the links between the city environment and issues of in/exclusion. In this paper, we present findings from a project that used participatory visual methodologies in order to explore how refugees take part in producing town-spaces to which they can connect. In addition, we have also interviewed representatives of the places that the refugees emphasize as particular nodes for how they relate to town, i.e. ethnic shops and public library. Our findings shows that their own routes and town-narratives are an important part of their strategies to re-making the town-space as a place of home and that places open for appropriation is important for spatial belonging. The study offers insights into the texture of spatial practices by revealing the subjects’ various degrees and types of engagement in and with the city environment and how that can widening our understanding of sustainable housing planning and building.
