Synthesis and chemical modification of some carbohydrates containing amino groups

• The alkylation with alkyl trifluoromethanesulfonates of hydroxyl groups in carbohydrates, containing base- or acid-labile substituents, has been examined. The reagent simultaneously transforms acetamindo groups to N-methylamino groups. Synthesis and nitrous acid deamination of methyl 4-amino-4-deoxy-β-L-arabinopyranoside has been performed. A route for reductive deamination of amino groups in carbohydrates by treatment with hydroxylamino-O-sulfonic acid is presented. The syntheses of 4 trisaccharides, 2 pentasaccharides, and a heptasaccharide, which are parts of the N-acetyl-D-lactosamine type of carbohydrate moiety of glycoproteins, are discussed.
