- Vitamin K is essential for the synthesis of blood coagulation proteins. The anticoagulant drugs of coumarin and indandione type hinder the activity of vitamin K and thereby retard clotting. X-ray diffraction studies of these drugs have been performed to obtain more information for understanding of the mechanism of the anticoagulant action. The present summary reviews general features of conformation and molecular geometries based on crystal structure investigations of anticoagulants such as coumarin and indandione derivatives and some related compounds. The relations between the molecular structure and biological activity on the basis of the X-ray results are also commented on.
