Enterprise survival - challenges and options

• This introductory chapter has the following structure and content:• Enterprise survival – a background • Globalisation and competition • Staying competitive through the development of work Enterprise survival – a background Here we will argue for the standpoint where the improvement of working conditions and work organisation is considered an important means of strengthening the enterprise in its striving for keeping competitive. We will argue for a situation where both employees, their unions and the employers look upon the development of work as a way to create safe and developing jobs as well as a way to improve the efficiency of the company and its ability to meet new challenges. The framework that we want to provide and the questions we raise are based on our own lengthy experiences as practitioners and researchers in the fields of work life learning, work and production development, and accident prevention in Sweden as well as in developing countries. In order to understand the challenges and options available to develop enterprises and work it is necessary to get a hold of the governing structures, i.e. the conditions under which companies live and compete. The increasing globalisation of markets put new demands on companies. Companies all over the world are now exposed to competition from both domestic as well as international companies. These changes call for development where competence is in focus and where co-operation and participation is encouraged. This is the case in developing countries as well as in the more industrialised part of the world.
